Did you read my message above? As long as the iPad fails at basic computing tasks like "let me access and copy my own files" it's not a real computer, more along the lines of a glorified smart tv, an appliance. And sure, some apps allow background video, but then it stops as soon as you open a game that uses audio, duh.
A “computer“ is not what IT is, rather it’s what YOU do with it. I know an older gentleman who has a very expensive Mac Pro (he’s loaded, and wants “the best” in whatever he buys), and all he does on it is surf the web, check his email, and keep up with his miniature Tank club.

Since what he does could easily be accomplished on a $329 iPad, by your definition he doesn’t really own a “computer“ after all.

I know other people who run their whole business on an iPad Pro. For them, it is most certainly a “computer“.

Your particular needs do not apply to the entire user base.

A Prius in no way meets my driving needs, but I don’t go around telling people that it’s not really a “car“.

How does it fail at this task? Don’t you know how to operate it?
There is no way to access all of my files on an iPad. If you think that this is a user problem, rather than an OS limitation, then tell me how to gain access to all of my files on the iPad, like the Finder or the Terminal allows on my Mac. Otherwise stop trolling, please.

You don’t know how to setup a iPad properly.

Which files are you referring to?

For me, I have been storing my files in Dropbox since I got my first ipad, so I have never had an issue accessing them anywhere, anytime.

Are you talking about game saves or something?

Nowhere near a laptop if you want to be serious with work and gaming etc.....always will be a sidepiece unless you never needed a laptop. Simple truth.

Not sure where notebooks come in for gaming. I either get a good gaming desktop or a console but a notebook?
We do have plenty people doing work on their iPads though.

As per my original post in this discussion, yes, that's exactly what I'm referring to, saved game states that I can't transfer from one iPad to another short of backing up and restoring everything.

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt, so tell me how do I access and copy the saved state of a game from one iPad to another when the game has no built-in mechanism? Is there a way to set up my iPad to do that without a jail-break and a Terminal?

If you dont know where you have put your own files on the ipad, or how to get them then there are plenty on online tutorials to help you. No need to get all raging about it.

If you’re wanting system or otherwise unaccessible files - which is an inherent feature of iPadOS, then you‘re out of luck. Though I’m not sure they could truly be classed as ‘your’ files.

If it’s some other ‘issue’ then please enlighten us.

Otherwise, go back to your terminal and try not to worry to much about what the iPad is bringing to the rest of us. It’s ok if it’s not for you.

Apple doesn't really consider app data like that as "your files". It's up to the game dev to implement syncing. The only way to transfer app data on a system level is full backup/restore.

Maybe you’re just not familiar with the kind of gaming laptops on the market and just playing angry birds.

Oh I know I love my Angry Birds on my gaming desktop. Thanks for trying.

However looking at other popular gaming solutions like the Switch, I’ll take an iPad any day, grab a good joypad when needed.

True but for high-end mobile gaming, Windows laptops are more practical. :D
Maybe we can open a thread and argue about it because is mobile gaming real gaming. I mean come on - the laptop is heavy and loud and has worse overall sustained performance and yeah desktop is just better :D :p [joking].
Yes, this just boils down to personal use cases and preferences. One doesn't really know if it's doable or preferable unless they try. I like chocolate ice cream, you might like strawberry. Nothing wrong with either.
Yep, for completeness I actually do not even eat ice cream so it is even worse :D.
I'll always need a desktop/laptop of some sort. Can't imagine Apple opening up iPadOS for Blu-ray ripping, running background servers, etc. I don't mean to disparage desktops and laptops with my reuse of the term "sidepiece" from the other poster. It's just the reality in my case. At home, I rarely use desktops and laptops (80-90% iPad use, 5-10% iPhone and 5% PC). They PCs mostly function as support device/server for the iPad.
Do you work from home or you go in the office? I actually have been working from home for the past year and 3 months and the lines of work vs personal usage kind of blurs for me. As a result I can end up using the more powerful device for both personal and work use because I am used to it. Meaning it might turn out that iPad can handle my basic personal needs but I am already used to Windows for work so it is easy for me to use Windows for the personal stuff as well.
I find the iPad works majority of the time for my everyday needs (for home use): banking/finance, email, web, downloads and light file management (via combination of Files app and Dropbox), reading PDFs (technical), reading ebooks and comics (recreational), shopping, light Excel work, etc. Heck, even the iPhone can handle most of those tasks just fine (bar PDFs and comics). I just prefer having a bigger viewport.
And trust me your eyes will thank you for that later on :).
My work is Windows-centric so can't really use either Mac or iPad for that. However, the iPad functions quite nicely as a communications and note taking tool for work and fits easier on my desk than a separate laptop with built-in keyboard would.
I know that you rely on Windows for work but I do not remember why. I am interested what is the workflow you do that cannot be done on Mac or iPad if you don't mind sharing of course.

Tim said that angry birds needed the M1 chip...he thanks you for obliging ?...I’ll stick to real games on a real gaming device and use the iPad how it was designed...sidepiece

Yes, this is Apple's definition. My definition is my device - my files. I can see why a person would think that all files on a certain device are theirs. That being said I know that I won't get this with an iPad so I don't look for it. And to be fair people like my mother appreciate the simplicity.

Alas, we're considered critical so I never stopped going to the office. I'm used to Windows myself so I reach for either Windows desktop or laptop when I need to at home.

It's just so much more convenient to use the iPad in couch or bed. No need to bring work with me when I'm at home.

In-house webapps that require .NET or Internet Explorer and other proprietary software that are only available on Windows.

Maybe it’s not obvious to you but this thread got merged with the bigger thread, so that’s really nobodies fault except macrumours for not putting a marker to tell. So with that in mind, I doubt anyone who followed the other thread saw your posts.
The new stuff written since I wrote my piece still stands though. What of ‘your files’ can’t you get? You seem to be speaking in terms of a grab all of what you want os, but you must know this isn’t how ipados works. You want access to files that the os will simply not allow not will ever allow. It’s not macos man. Get over it. At this point you need to realise what it is or isn’t and ask the devs to implement what you want - which they can.

I have no idea what files @Basic75 wants to transfer, but it’s been a long, long time since we legally could do what we want with any files on our devices. As with music, the same with games.

It’s just easier for developers to stop their customers from breaking the rules on iOS and derivative OSes.

Yeah, there is no perfect solution when it comes to this. My mother would not want access to such files because she would sure break the system. I want access to the files but I also know how to not break the system. It is more like I like to tinker with such stuff. So you can't win with everyone :).

An iPad is not the device for tinkerers, that’s for sure

Yep. I mean when I decided to purchase an iPad I read and watched enough videos so that I know what I expect. It was OK for me as I never intended to rely solely on an iPad. I was looking for a digital notebook (hence the pencil) that is basically a companion for my primary device (the laptop).

I am just saying that for some people real computer means a device that they can tinker and based on this they might say that the iPad is not a computer.

My definition is different because well every device that has some sort of computing power is a computer. In that sense even physical calculator is sort of computer but I won't use it to browse and send emails :D.
