You have a good point. Those apps often only work in portrait and not landscape and are a right pain. I usually delete and go elsewhere with my business
There’s even popular apps that have been around for years like Headspace that STILL don’t support landscape orientation. It boggles my mind.

I am still not seeing the attachment option. It’s possible that this hasn’t been rolled out to me yet.

That is a possibility.

I don’t see that option either and I just updated the gmail app. Is this feature still being rolled out? If so, this is welcomed news. Not being able to attach any file I want has been a debilitating limitation for Gmail on iPad.

I have had this for a while now ... that I know of. Not sure when it became available.
Can access this on both my IPP 11 and Pro Max.

Ah, found it. There was no “locations” per se. When you go to attach, under “attachments”, the first thumbnail is actually a picture of a folder. That will bring up Files.

Yep!
Piss poor way of implementing it. I found it by accident a bit back. Thought ”Attachements” was stuff in the emails.

You can save the capture in Photos and then add it as such in Outlook. I know it is different compared to macOS, but it's possible..

There are 3rd party apps that can be used for that

That has been one of my biggest complaints. You do everything else pretty much the same way except for iOS/iPadOS. Those need work arounds or new ways, if it exists.

Yeah that’s because it used to say “recent attachments”. Changing it to “attachments” and just adding the Files button that looks like a thumbnail is not the best ui choice imo.

When WWDC comes around each year, I am always excited to see what has been done to enhance the iPad platform. Granted, they have a long way to go. But, the rate of change and progress is just so much more rapid on the iPad compared to the Mac. You could say this is because Apple has abandoned the Mac, but honestly, the Mac is just a more mature platform. There is less room to grow. On the other hand, the iPad has enormous room to grow. Clearly iPad hardware has outdistanced the software for years. I can’t wait to see what Apple does with it in the future.

Trying to make the switch right now ..

This setup would never work for me :)
If you really have to use just one device then I get it. Otherwise it is difficult for me to comprehend how someone can work like this, on such a small display, all the time.
It’s relaxing, and you have the flexibility to move the keyboard or trackpad/mouse wherever you like, i just positioned it so I have everything in frame

Strange, I have an iMac on my desk at work as well as my iPad Pro - and use the iPad 95% of the time in preference as I prefer the experience. The iMac only comes into play using software not available for the iPad and if I want an extra screen to view multiple spreadsheets. The 12.9” iPad Pro screen I find quite large enough.

good looking setup! What stand is that? Or is it a mini camera tripod with a tablet holder?
Thanks!

I don’t know if either are still available but see below.
However any tripod with a tablet holder will do.

I wrote earlier in this thread that due to my requirement for software development (mainly in Windows), an iPad could never be my only computer but I'm hoping that with the addition of the Magic Keyboard I'll be able to take the first step and use my 12.9 to replace my aging 13" MBP (this is the first Mac I haven't really enjoyed using due to the butterfly keyboard).

I've got a Surface Pro that I can use for my windows requirements but the plan is (if it works out!), that the iPad will be my "main" everyday device.

I'll keep the MBP for Mac / iOS development for now but if Apple really do release XCode for the iPad I might be able to use it for that too.

Exciting times!

Sorry to be noisy why can't the Macbook work for your programming needs? I mean what are you coding on that requires mostly Windows?

I don't know for me it sounds a bit compicated to have Surface Pro, Macbook Air and iPad and to use all of them for different needs. I personally would go for a bit more simplified workflow. Like I get that one device is difficult to achieve everything but at least to narrow it down to two devices and not three.

I own my own company that produces bespoke software for large organisations. They all use Windows so I have to too. I did try running Windows in a VM and also Bootcamp but just find the surface Pro a better windows device than the MBP.

I completely agree that it's over complicated (and I didn't even mention my desktop machines which make it even more complicated!), hence my plan to replace the MBP with my iPad: dumping windows completely isn't an option for the reasons above and I need a portable Windows device when I'm on customers site, although I will investigate the option of RDP from the iPad back to a desktop windows machine.

It would certainly be easier to just have one machine but I've got used to compartmentalising my work into the different machines so its not a major issue for me any more

I see. Makes sense! Indeed if you sell software for Windows it kind of makes sense to have a Windows machine to run said software and make sure that it works as expected.

Do you do Mac/iOS development for work or for hobby/fun? To be honest even if they make Xcode available for iPad I do not expect it to be ready for real Development right away. It would take them a while to reach that point.

To be honest at least for me currently it is not easy to merge everything into one machine. I would have to make way too many compromises to make it work. Something I am not willing to do right now. That being said I also do not want too many devices/machines as this would make things complicated when it comes to continuaty. I try as much as possible to use cross platform applications and rely on OneDrive to store my files but still the more devices I have, the more I have to think about sharing between them.

My Mac / iOS development is just for fun: I've dabbled with the App Store in the past but never made enough to make it a worthwhile use of my time so I don't bother any more. I still enjoy developing with XCode (probably even more now I'm not trying to come up with something that will sell / generate Ad revenue)

I don't really find sharing files a problem as documents, etc are in OneDrive and source code is in Azure DevOps or GitHub.

I guess over many years I've just got used to using loads of machines and don't really notice (and if the iPad with Magic Keyboard is a bust I'll get a new MBP)

However, as my current MBP is reaching end of life and I can't wait to dump the butterfly keyboard I thought it was a good opportunity to try something a bit different

Makes sense. I like the idea of Xcode and the setup (based on what I read) but I don't do iOS Development for work. I unfortunately do not have the time to do coding anymore at work but still even if I will do it it is Java and it is a web application. And I don't find it meaningful to buy Mac just to have fun while do iOS development. Not that worth it.

For some reason OneDrive does not play nice with iOS and I stumble upon a lot of bugs. I have company iPhone and quite often it cannot store files from my email completely on OneDrive. I end up with partial files that worth nothing and cannot be deleted. It is annoying. It also reloads way too often. OneDrive does work well on my Windows laptop though. Same on Android. It just does not always play nice on iOS.

Yeah if your Macbook is anyway at the end of its life it makes sense.

Does anyone think the Ipad Pro is doable as a desktop replacement? My wife is going to be starting grad school in the summer. She definitely needs a laptop so I was looking at the Macbook Pro 13" that just go released. However she likes the idea of just purchasing the Ipad Pro 12.9, magic keyboard, pen, and any software or apps she might need. She is in education so I highly doubt she will be using the ipad or macbook for more than writing papers, sending emails, and maybe presentations she has to send. She currently uses google slides a lot with her job. We are contacting her college also to try and get specifics.

After searching on this topic for awhile, it isn't clear if an ipad pro would support adobe pdf, office, etc. easy enough for her. I work in IT so for me it wouldn't be an issue and I could get around it. I don't mind downloading an app if it means it gives her the functionality. However I don't want her to have to use multiple apps to convert stuff or have a long work around for something that would be quick on a macbook.

Currently I am leaning towards just getting her a Macbook Pro 13" and an Ipad Pro 11". Obviously spending less money would be great but I can plan if I need to buy both.

That honestly sounds good. But a 12.9 iPP should be able to do everything.

It depends on the kind of work, but for the scenario you describe, YES, it is not only doable, but enjoyable.

You can instal adobe acrobat and MS office if you want, but at least in case of Adobe it is not needed, and it's preferably avoided, since iOS lets you create and edit PDFs and if you find you need more "power" there are at least 3 other apps that are way better than Adobe Acrobat (and a lot cheaper, also that).

It is quite easy, my assistant with her iPad Pro has less problems and less need for IT assistance than other assistants in the office. She actually ends up helping her mates when they can not accomplish something on their PCs.

I currently made the switch the iPad Pro with the AMK for uni work and I’m finding it as easy as it was on my 2015MBA. There is a slight learning curve with adapting to the mobile nature of some apps (such as web pages etc.) but overall it’s a pleasant experience.
For PDFs the default viewer embedded in the files app allows you to edit it though you can find other suitable editors in the App Store.
I personally haven’t used google docs however when I do it is browser based and you are able to load pages in desktop mode so this shouldn’t be too much of an issue.

Wasteman here is right.

I'm a physician, and besides working in a public institution, I have (let's see if the pandemic doesn't changes that) a private practice and teach a college graduate course. About 2 years ago I looked into substituting my MBP with an iPad Pro, but to me it wasn't possible. For the 80% of tasks (college classes, academic stuff, web and mail) it was more than enough; however there is a small but significant part of my activities that involve working on machines with specialized software that is (mostly) windows only, and that requieres virtual machines on my Mac. There is no walking around this, so I didn't made the jump.

If I was only in uni, I wouldn't have a problem with an iPad only setup.
