I don't expect that iPadOS 15 will solve all problems of the platform. Even if Apple allows true multitasking there are still a lot of work to be done, if the iPad is to be seen on par with the Mac. Simple put it, we need full blown enterprise apps, that are on par with their desktop equivalents:
  • Microsoft Office
  • Adobe Photoshop
  • Apple iWork
  • Apple Pro Apps
  • Adobe Premiere
  • Microsoft Teams
  • XCode
  • Parallels & VMWare Fusion
  • Safari with full extension support
  • Chrome with full extension support
Also, many of the default Apple apps must get a major overhaul:

  • Apple Mail must get Smart Folders support
  • Photos App must get feature parity with the Mac app
  • The Contacts app must also get feature parity with the Mac app

The iPad is a great device and I enjoy surfing on it or listening to podcasts or watching a movie, but apart from that I don't use it.
100% agree with you on this. For me, full-version MS Office (especially Excel’s pivot and solver functionality) and a full-featured browser (including extensions) would completely seal the deal. Until that point, I’m forced to keep an Intel NUC on my network to use as a headless Windows machine - accessible via Splashtop remotely or RD Client locally to gain said functionality. Photos improvements would be nice, but not necessary for my uses (I’ve got a couple dedicated photo apps that work pretty well on the iPad). Fingers crossed that iPadOS 15 brings the above…

Yes, I need the full version of Excel on iPad. The current version is really good, but I need pivot tables and full data validation functionality.

Eventually one is going to win out in the end.
I agree about the other stuff but not so sure about this. In my opinion, Mac and iPad could exist in parallel with each other indefinitely even if the iPad becomes more functional because they have different focuses/specialties. My bet is this will be the case, until maybe one day they’re both displaced by something else.

I use Microsoft excel a lot on the desktop clients for mood boards and it has a fantastic easy feature ’remove background’ that lets you remove backgrounds from images effortlessly. Excel on iPad does not have this feature and is the only reason I keep going back to my Windows machine! I am yet to find an iPad app which does it quite as easily and navigating a 2nd app isn’t ideal - Builtin excel feature would be game changer for me.

All I use my Ryzen desktop for these days is raw photo editing. So please port Capture One to the M1 iPad (or another capable raw editor), I won't need a desktop then anymore.
Lightroom is not an option with it's stupid subscription fees and cloud based editing.

I use Lightroom but not the cloud and like like it but what about Affinity? It's a good RAW processor.

on the iPad? I don't think it's on the level of C1?

I used LR Classic for many years, but the subscription just isn't worth it for me. Fuji raws also love C1

Affinity works well on the iPad and it could be a long/eternal wait for Capture One to be ported. I do use LR Classic and my loves Photoshop on the desktop so the subscription is worth it to me.

Oh. I don’t expect C1 anytime soon on my iPad unless Apple allows Mac apps to run on M1 iPads.
I would love to use the 12.9” iPad with a pencil to edit my raws though.

I’d love a simple way to export my light room collection to a non-subscription app. I’m paying £10 a month just for the collection management and publishing plugins. I do have my originals in date folders so maybe I can reimport but I’d like to keep ratings and other metadata

Lightroom is unmatched in that regard IMO. And I miss that. The raw processing with my Fuji Raws is much better using C1 though.

Sorry if it was asked before ?
Is it possible to retire a MacBook with around ~ 250 GB Apple photos Library with an iPad Pro (+ maybe external HDD?) and not using Apple iCloud Photos?

depends on the software you use.

Remove it from my household, so only the Photos Need to go to a safe new place. (I could use a Job MacBook for occasional reasons or transfer)

Apple Photos App at the Moment
you don't even need a pro for that... an air is more than enough for photos. If you want to keep them locally get the 256GB model, otherwise store them in a drive and get the 64GB model

For no good reason I want the m1 with latest & greates ?
Apple was really smart, put an iPad pro chip in the Mac before putting it in the iPad, make it appear like a desktop chip, then put it where it was supposed to go in the first place and make people say "wow, that's incredible, I want it"

Anyway same, 256 for everything local, or 128 + drive (if you already have it, otherwise you are better off going 256 anyway)

Note—officially iPads have had “desktop-class” chips since the A9X iPad Pro, according to Apple’s marketing.

But yes it’s really funny how our perception is heavily determined by what we see first. Along that same vein, I mentioned this in another thread, but I wonder if the iPad had been released before the iPhone, would people have called the iPhone “an amazing pocketable iPad” instead of the iPad ”just a big iPhone”…
