Ok so this thread should just be dropped, like the other 500 of the same nature. I do not understand how someone can complain about the size/weight of the iPad. Did you not try one in the store before you purchased it? Apple did not go change the weight of the device before they shipped it.

The iPad is designed to bridge the gap between the iPhone and your computer. Yes it is heavier than an iPhone (if you couldn't see that by looking at it, you are an idiot) but it is also MUCH lighter than my MacBook pro.

I usually leave these threads alone, because they are complete BS. I think we can sum it up with this... If you bought it without actually trying it in the store first, then you have nothing to complain about. Who buys a car without test-driving it? I'm not sure if you know this or not, but the Apple store is set up with great little displays where you can try their new products before buying them. They also lay out ALL of the information on the product both in the store and online. You really have no reason to complain about a product when you know exactly what you are buying.

If you don't like it, RETURN IT, and stop filling these forums with your garbage complaints.

Lean it against a surface and let physics hold it for you? If all else fails, return it!

I'd love to see a smaller, lighter iPad... basically use the retina display
technology to keep the same screen resolution, but shrink the device
down to a more manageable size.

That's a joke...right ?

...

Its not that light but after you use it for awhile try lifting a macbook pro and it will feel like a boat anchor whereas pre iPad i felt like the macbook pro was extremely light. Sometimes I like to play in my iPad in the bath and that is the only time i find it hard to use because I am laying down and have nowhere to rest it and am trying oto contrort my hands whijle holding it to type and trying to not drop it in the water. I probably shouldn't be doing that with it anyway

I like my iPad plenty but it can be unwieldy if you don't have a convenient backstop for it when playing certain games or doing other apps.

People who have troubles without the iPad should get a gym membership to strengthen their wrists and fore arms. And how is it non ergonomic? How would you make it different

You can't make it ergonomic. But if you ask an ergonomics person I bet they will find all kinds of problems with how people are using them. You cant look straight on at the screen and keep your arms and feet at perfect angles to use it though.

I'm wondering if our snarky friends have used the iPad to read an entire book? That is totally different than surfing websites, writing emails and the like - whether it's for 5 minutes or 5 hours.

Apple obviously positioned the iPad as a book reader. (See all the ebooks they are selling) So expecting an ebook reader to be "amazing" or "miraculous" - to use their words is not asking too much.

Yes. I read on it daily, for hours in fact. And it's basically replaced my Kindle, which weighs half as much. This, again, from someone who's been disabled by illness for more than two years; my muscle strength is somewhere between poor and non existent, and we've only just started rebuilding it. If I can work with this thing comfortably, most able bodied people will have no problem once they adapt to the iPad instead of whining about it. I run the battery down completely almost every day as this is my primary computing device. It took that spot because, guess what? It weighs absolutely NOTHING compared to my 17" MacBookPro. Hell, it doesn't weigh as much as many hardcover books for that matter.

Again, THIS IS NOT PRIMARILY A HANDHELD DEVICE. Yes, you can in fact hold it that way for a time, but stupid marketing claims and images aside, the damn thing isn't magic, it won't levitate its own weight for you, and from a practical perspective, it logically works best for most people when they prop it on a pillow, a stand, or use a case with adjustable positions on their laps.

While the "go to the gym" claims are simplistic, they're also partly true. If you're otherwise healthy and you find the iPad too heavy to hold for more than a few minutes at a time, you really do need to work on strengthening your arms and wrists. Other positions help too. I'll often lay mine on my forearm with my fingers curled over the top and a lower corner tucked into my elbow. This works pretty well both for reading and for quick one handed typing. Additionally, as with any other device you use for long periods (and with books for that matter!), you should be changing positions frequently and stretching periodically to avoid repetitive stress issues.

All of this is common sense.

I am 62 and have arthritis in all my joints, If I can use it w/o issues, I have only one thing to say, ,but I won't:cool:

Wow. Puts the wimpy complainers to shame!

I used to hold SLR much heavier than iPad for long period of time.
Thinking of video taping myself using iPad 1 handed, horizontally to show how it's done.

Possible causes and solutions

get the apple ipad case. doesn't make it lighter but it's a lot easier to hold imho.

I agree!
Plus, the iPad is much lighter than any regular book of that capacity! :D

Try this in order, until you are comfortable:
1) If you hold the iPad up while laying down, eventually blood flow to your hands will lower, your hands/arms will get numb and it will feel heavy and painful to hold.-> Try holding it in another position.
2) Get an Apple iPAD case.
3) The an iPad holding base. There are some really nice ones that have a movable arm too.
4) Have a chiropractor check you for neck problems.
5) Exercise more.
6) Take a Viagra, so you can hold it longer. :D

Jokes aside, the Apple Case really makes it easier to hold. When you pull back the cover to use it as a stand, the thicker section it forms makes it a lot easier and comfortable to hold.
I think you may be holding it too tight as you feel it may slip off your hands, and this could be causing you pain.

"You're holding it Wrong" :D
Yeah I know its been said already

But seriously. I put mine into the Apple case the moment it came out of the box so a few weeks ago I thought I would try it naked.

It felt like I was gonna drop the thing. I always felt like I had fingers on the screen and it was harder to grip then with the case.

I think my experiment lastest less then a day.

With the Apple case on it, I've become completely comfortable holding the iPad. I don't notice the weight at all anymore. I tend to go between holding it with my left hand while navigating with my right, and holding it with both hands while I read the screen. When I need to type, I put it in my lap or on a counter/table and type with both hands.

After playing with tye iPad at the store I have to agree that it's heavy. This isn't an issue with notebooks since they can rest on one's lap. I prefer to have the iPad closer because the physical interaction with it takes place on the screen itself. I feel like an external keyboard eliminates the purpose of the iPad.

I must say, however, that it looks amazing.

If you can't hold an iPad, good luck doing fun things with a girl standing up.

Apparently you've never seen any of the iPad TV ads.
