I upgraded my 2018ipad for mini2019, the battery life is a huge disappointment for the new ipad mini, I am a student and take alot of not in class, the mini would only last half day compared to my old ipad2018 full day. iPad mini also heats alot when using notability!!!

I don't have the technical knowledge to respond to all of your issues. I don't have the Mini 4 to compare (sold mine over a year ago due to it being considerably slower than my other devices). Until the Mini 5 I have never been impressed with the screens on the Minis. My Mini 5 has an even white screen (bluish white with True Tone off) and color saturation compares favorably with my iPad Pro 11". I was trying to correct my former post which wasn't accurate re magenta tint. I don't think there is any reason to respond in what I consider to be a rude fashion.

First off, get a grip; I was not being "rude" to you. I asked you a valid question. You're also not obligated to respond.

You don’t need technical knowledge to see the things I described. For example, the viewing angle difference is obvious compared to the mini 4. The mini 5 has poor viewing angles.

It's likely you had a defective mini 4 display if you find the mini 5 better. I have now compared even more mini 5 displays in stores to my mini 4 and they all share the same deficiencies I pointed out in my original post.

Saturation is actually less for most colors on the mini 5 compared to the mini 4 (if that is what you were suggesting) and my iPhone 5s.

I really almost feel compelled to look at some mini5’s in store and see how they look just for some perspective of how much people are getting junk displays ,

Cause mine is pretty good and I’m a screen stickler.

I’d chalk it up to horrible panel lottery and maybe even main supplier of this part of a couple / few , is producing a generally unacceptable panel which is cropping up most commonly.

A lot of the criticism just sounds outright not like my device. And I’m far from one to defend a unit’s display to its end.

My xr has a bit of a faint warm band on the bottom but ive learned to deal with it because I can’t find another single fault with the phone and It’s jailbroken and no way am I wasting my time gambling again. The panel is otherwise great quality and relatively even. And it’s an AppleCare replacement . My first one was fine but developed bruising up the left side and bottom left for lack of better explanation and the replacement display had horrible backlight bleed seeping through the rubber gasket gap

But my mini5 was a keeper out of the box imo.

Glad you brought that up. I was going to touch on that too but I was focused on the poor image quality issues that I had forgotten about that. My iPad mini 4 had significantly better life when I bought it new compared to what I experienced with the new mini 5. Once the battery gets worn on the new mini 5 it's going to literally be a real drag sooner than what I experienced with my mini 4. Owners will be further frustrated to see performance throttled. To restore performance on my mini 4, along with battery life, I replaced the battery on my mini 4, which I recently did myself.

I'm not surprised the mini 5 battery life is not great. It's got the same size battery as the mini 4 but with a much faster CPU, four generations newer. Something had to give. Apple is running into a battery capability wall when it comes to significantly increasing CPU performance with each new generation. Battery tech is simply not keeping up with CPU advances.

So far I have looked at around 15 iPad mini 5 displays and they all appeared the same to me, with the same deficiencies I pointed out in my original post. I had my mini 4 with me to compare them to.

I hope you are right and there are some good displays out there. That said, I would be surprised if the poorer viewing angle would be any different. I still believe it has to do with the new pencil support added to the display. Did/do you have a mini 4 to compare the viewing angles of it to your mini 5? Even if the other issues I brought up were somehow resolved, I doubt I would be able to deal with the poorer viewing angles of the mini 5. It's that big of a difference compared to the mini 4.

Yeah that’s probably the difference I didn’t have a mini 4 for reference. But I think I genuinely have a nice display and would probably even be willing to forego viewing angles for p3 and True Tone on paper

My blacks don’t really turn reddish either. If it were half like some of the pics I see in the thread it would’ve instantly gone back. Instant.

I'm surprised you like the True Tone. I haven’t found many people impressed with the function. It made the mini 5 display look much worse that with it off. Much warmer was the effect, no matter the lighting conditions.

The P3 higher color gamut is actually mostly unnoticeable. You can see just a touch of more saturation in some warmer colors, but since the white level of the mini 5 has been turned down quite a bit compared to the mini 4 a flatter less saturated overall look is what I saw every time with the mini 5 compared to the mini 4.

Glad to hear your blacks are better.

Thanks for your input!

True Tone is hit or miss ambient lighting dependent. I may be off my rocker but I almost think panel to True Tone setting variable , that either there’s a lottery to the sensor itself or the “synergy” between ambient lighting and the panel and calibration. lol for lack of a better description

My first xr had amazing True Tone. Second I didn’t have any time w because that horrible backlight rubber gasket shine through, and the replacement is ok but definitely is jaundice-y sorta more often than not (better than x True Tone but not as good as my first unit imo from recollection)

Black levels on my first and current xr are great and I really can’t imagine better with led.

My replacement display w the shine through also had absolutely horrendous blown out black levels. Disgusting like TN quality almost Like some of these pics look like in the thread

Sorry to keep using xr as reference but I think it is related in a sense / being able to spot good vs bad panels and panel characteristics

I've never run into black level issues with my iPads. I did have terrible light leaks on my first iPad 4 (full size iPad) which was remedied with an exchange. My mini 4 has zero noticeable light leak, even at the brightest setting in a black screen. Just a fantastic display.

My plan is to continue using my revived mini 4 for as long as I can, especially for watching videos at home. My problem is that my mini has always traveled with me and I use it for most everything with an unlimited data plan so I will eventually need to upgrade to be current on security updates. My guess is that Apple will stop software support for the mini 4 after iOS 13 and at the latest I will have to buy one then.

I also just bought the Mini 5 and testing it like what OP does. And it has the magenta screen problem too, i dont know if this problem is affecting all the Mini 5 units or its only just some batch have bad quality display.

I dont know if i should exchange the unit or just return it since i might be get the same problem with the next unit.

I think I noticed it too but I kept it anyway since I have ac+ but now I don't even notice it or maybe it just goes away over time.

Is this a widespread problem, really looking to get one but the screen lottery is slowing my decision?

I am starting to wonder if they all have it to a minor degree (full brightness and/or in certain lighting conditions) as mine does, but it doesn’t bother me and I have AC+ anyway. It took me a while to notice as it isn’t there in normal use. It’s a joy to use and while I used to split web browsing between my phone and a larger iPad, it’s now almost exclusively done with the Mini unless it is charging or something.

From the photos posted here there are definitely some dud ones but I don’t think it’s that many in the grand scheme of things. It may be that there are less of them now that the pressure of an imminent release isn’t hanging over production.

I would get one and see. If you wait a year or something they may surprise us and release another update soon afterwards. Definitely I would buy from somewhere with a no quibble returns policy though, just in case.

I tested quite a few iPad mini 5s on display and they all had the things I described in my original and subsequent posts. I encourage everyone to voice their concerns to Apple directly through their feedback page, otherwise none of this will likely get resolved and the iPad mini is an iPad size that I hope never goes away.

Right now I’m happily making due with a reenergized iPad mini 4. I replaced the battery myself and the full performance has been restored and battery life is dramatically better. Sadly though, once again Apple has broken the TV app with the latest version of it, so Home Sharing my "Home Videos" (ripped movies and TV shows from my movie and TV disc collection) from my iMac is now very sluggish to skip forward and back. Sometimes the video even gets stuck on a frame while the audio continues. Ever since Apple got rid of the reliable and fast Videos app for the stupid TV app Home Sharing my videos has been a terrible experience. One new bug after another and bugs that never or take forever to get fixed.

I know I must be late to the party. But for your information, and anyone will have the issue. Here is my experience with ipad mini5 display issues.
1st ipad mini I bought direct from apple is gray. It had that annoying pinkish blue tune to black color. And the display seemed not being fully laminated. And it also seemed they forgot to coat it with finger print resistance oil.
So, I bought a silver one from local store just to try my luck. The result is I now sit with a better ipad mini5. Even before I turn the display on, I knew it had a display from a different manufacturer. The display is fully laminated and stay dark black under strong light condition. And it is quite resistance to finger prints. Although I admit the view angle can still improve a little bit, however I am now happy with its much dark black.

I agree. The OP should try returning the current mini and purchasing a new one. He may end up getting a better looking display for his preferences.

OP, even current iPhones can have variances in screen temperature and color.

I do not think some people will be happy no matter how many time they return. I very much love my Mini 5 and notice none of these problems.

I can definitely see the black level glow on the space grey unit that’s typically characteristic of a panel lacking contrast

I think this wallpaper pops w p3 mini5 screen

I got a new mini 5 and can notice a slight magenta/red tint only on the bars when watching video mainly in dark, not black like my iPad pro 11"bit, annoying but not sure if worth stuffing around trying to swap?

Anyone care to share their screen setting for the mini 5?

I think I noticed this too when I first got mine. I don’t notice it anymore.

After 84 days I gave up. I had 90 days open purchase on Netonnet in Sweden and returned my Ipad mini 5. Said that I did not stand with the bad screen Got all the money back. Back to my Samsung Tab S2 8 inch. Slightly slower, the battery life goes away after 3 days of hibernation, but the AMOLED screen is wonderful.

several different times i went to best buy to find they had magenta screens until the most recent time.. maybe it has been improved?

Nope got mine 2 weeks ago, really annoyed me compared to my 11" pro, sold it lucky i got it cheaper so only lost a few $.
