It came out today and looks awesome! I have the Mini 4 and am glad they kept the line alive. Anyone gonna buy one to keep the sales rolling?

They kept the same high resolution screen, same chassis (I can reuse all of my cases), bumped up the processor and added Pencil 1 support... which is exactly what I was hoping for. Apple did something they haven't done in a long, long time... produced something exactly as I wanted.
I'll be waiting to upgrade my Mini 4 though. I want to hear about how much RAM it has and for it to go on sale.
Waking up to seeing the iPad Mini 5 news made my morning! I've been really hoping for a refreshed iPad mini forever now. I've always been a huge fan of the form factor of the iPad Mini. Personally, I find the form factor way more manageable in my day to day usage (light productivity, browsing the internet while on the couch, media consumption while falling asleep, etc). I picked up an iPad 6th generation a few weeks back and although I enjoy it, I'm probably going to grab the iPad Mini 5. It's all in the form factor.
Unless a standard iPad appears next week and the specs/pricing grab me more than the Mini 5, yes. My iPad 3 is kinda dying and I fancied the iPad mini when it came out, but couldn't justify the money. This thing just feels too big now but I guess either the Mini 5 or a 2019 standard iPad would be a noticeable difference.
I use mine for reading among other things. I can’t read too well on a phone so the mini is the perfect form factor. People tell me to get a Kindle. I tell them I love Apple devices.
Feels like I have been waiting for a new iPad Mini forever. Ordered the Mini 5 today & was pleasantly surprised about the processor bump to A12 (I was expecting A11 at best) & most importantly, that not only had the laminated screen been retained, but that the display on Mini 5 is even better than Mini 4. The rumour of Mini 5 reverting to the chassis of Mini 2 thankfully turned out not to be true. I would have stuck with my Mini 4 had the display reverted back to a non laminated screen.
Despite being pleased by today’s announcement, I am still not 100% satisfied, as I would have loved to have seen the announcement/launch of a true iPad Mini Pro...maybe sometime in the future this will happen...but based on the length of time between the launch of Mini 4 & Mini 5, I suspect we won’t see iPad Pro Mini until around 2023!

While my usage case is different than yours, I will be glad to answer any questions I can. The Mini 4 was my most productive iPad prior to the pencil introduction, so I look forward to writing in Notes again, watching movies with sound again (No Bluetooth headphones for me), reading, annotating PDFs and drawing (Yay!)
Glad I can trade in my 2018 for credit because the home button is getting flaky and the RAM issues freezes and things). Every iPad I’ve bought from Best Buy since last summer has had issues of some kind, so the trade in will be in lieu of sales. So no more Apple stuff from BB.

I can answer for me: Pencil capabilities. A better, laminated screen, possibly more RAM and definitely more storage all in a proven chassis. I think the price point is fine considering the upgrades the Mini has received.

Thats funny. Every apple stuff I have bought at BB has had no issues and this includes a Mini 4, iPhone 8, and ATV 4. Perhaps you are around a bad BB.
Two bad Best Buys...yeah probably. Neither will get my
business again though, despite the local store saying they’d price match any time. Not worth it to me.

Yeah I read various blurbs about microphone and volume button placement. Overall dimensions are probably the same though.
I plan to buy one at some point. Need a new tablet for the bedside. I have been underwhelmed with my Amazon Fire HD 8.
I’ve been waiting for an updated mini because I have a telescope with a computerized mount that allows any iOS device to control the telescope using a compatible astronomy app. Even though I’ve never owned a mini before and have both pros (11 and 12.9) and the XS, I think the mini is the perfect size to strap on the telescope’s tripod (it forms an ad hock WiFi network to communicate with the scope’s mount) and always right there ready to use. Not too small, not too big, just right. Probably could have used the previous generation mini just as well but I figure if I get a updated machine so much the better.
So basically after a brief alignment process you can tap any star, planet or celestial object on the astronomy app and the telescope automatically points to it and centers it in the eyepiece. No more star charts. No more hunting around trying to find a specific object. Man what a time to be alive.

Hmm, this makes me reconsider the new mini. I wouldn’t mind having a smaller device for reading. I was disappointed with the new mini. So many years and the same design, plus I sold my gen one Apple Pencil when I got the new pro. There’s just no way I would go back any by the first gen Apple Pencil again. Carrying around two pencils isnt going to happening. But buying one for reading my ebooks from Apple and Kindle might be a great option. I was, admittedly, hoping for a pro type mini refresh with second gen Apple Pencil support. Hmmm.. the mini for a easy grab reading device. The older mini’s might work just as well for reading though.
I have like 178 books that I bought from the iBooks store on my Mini. I do not have the kindle app but you can download it as Kindle has more books available and sometimes they are at lower prices. The Mini is the perfect form factor. No a iPhone 8+, iPhone XS+ or whatever will not replace the Mini for reading.
I use iBooks and Kindle. I had to buy some study/research books on Kindle. However, iBooks has become really good. I study and ready on my 12.9 but its not always as easy to just lay around and read with. The mini could solve that. But the thought of buying something that’s new and only supports the older pencil “feels” wrong. Lol
I ordered one yesterday.. couldn't resist. Not sure if it's too close in size to my XS Max though.

Getting an A12 processor would be cool, and the old iPad Mini chassis is pretty much perfect, so no complaints there. Pencil 2 support would have been neat, but Pencil 1 isn't a deal breaker and saves you a pretty penny.
What IS a big deal to me is the lack of stereo speakers and then the lack of USB-C kills any interest I had.
The high entry price, especially in Europe, makes it so you can get a refurbished Pro 10.5 for the same price as a new Mini, so that's it for me, sadly. I've always been fond of the 8" form factor but it's just a bad deal right now.

I too will get an iPad Mini 5 (256GB) but am waiting for STM to come out with a nicely armored case for it first.
