I use iBooks and Kindle. I had to buy some study/research books on Kindle. However, iBooks has become really good. I study and ready on my 12.9 but its not always as easy to just lay around and read with. The mini could solve that. But the thought of buying something that’s new and only supports the older pencil “feels” wrong. Lol
Agreed, I have a mini 4 but it’s slowish compared to the pro, so thinking of this now. Problem is where to stash the pencil, beauty of the mini is amazing lightness and I don’t want a heavy cover either.

I agree.
Should I upgrade my Mini 4 to the 5, I'll be sticking with a smartcover only and "sling" for the Pencil. I have the MoKo Pencil case for the 2018 iPad, I expect them to make one for the iPad Mini.

I think I’m out on the new mini. I just priced one out. When I added the 64g model to my bag in Apples store app, I saw a little “warning” by Apple that 10-12 gigs are taken up by the OS and up to 4 gigs of stock apps. With that in mind I added the 256 gig model to my bag. Then I added cellular and the first gen Pencil (which would have been a re-buy for me). The total with my local tax rate was over $930 dollars!

I know this is just my simple opinion but I just can’t pull speed almost $1,000 to go “back” to a home button, which iPhones moved away from a couple years ago, a 3 year old gen one Pencil and the same basic mini design that’s been around for years.

I wanted the mini but it just doesn’t make sense, for me, to spend that much after having a pro design iPad.

They kept the same high resolution screen, same chassis (I can reuse all of my cases), bumped up the processor and added Pencil 1 support... which is exactly what I was hoping for. Apple did something they haven't done in a long, long time... produced something exactly as I wanted. :)

I'll be waiting to upgrade my Mini 4 though. I want to hear about how much RAM it has and for it to go on sale.
I’ve only had my mini 4 for a year and it still works well so I’ll be waiting for a while or if I can get it on sale.

That's a good approach. I'm in no rush to upgrade, but I am keeping a keen eye on trade-in values on the Mini 4 and looking for sales on the Mini 5. Within 4-6 weeks there is sure to be sales on the Mini 5 in the range of $75-$100 off. Between the sale price and trade-in value, I'm looking at $150-175 out of pocket.

I ordered one yesterday.. couldn't resist. Not sure if it's too close in size to my XS Max though.
iPad Mini offers Split View, Slide Over, PIP, etc., and they’re game changers for productivity - none of which are available on iPhone regardless of screen size. I don’t imagine you’ll be disappointed.

There is so many iPad options right now. Very confusing to a new buyer.

You could go 1st or 2nd gen iPad Pro, new iPad Air, newish iPad 6th gen, new iPad mini 5, or iPad Pro 3rd gen.

^ Listed in a random order.

A lot of options.

They built all of those stores just for you

Yeah I read various blurbs about microphone and volume button placement. Overall dimensions are probably the same though.
This is correct. The rear microphone has been re-re-located to upper back center, instead of near the camera.

Also, the new volume buttons are supposedly slightly larger. Neither is necessarily a deal-breaker, but some modification of older cases may be desirable or even necessary.

In addition to Split-View, will the iPad Mini 5 support Slide-Over (without graying out the Split-View apps in the background like the 2018 iPad does)?

I emailed Apple months ago asking for an upgrade. I have a Mini 4 that I use with firelight in the airplane and the Mini five with upgraded processor will allow charts to refresh quicker. My mini 4 will pass down to my wife and her Mini 2 will go away and I will get a Mini 5

Thanks Apple as the larger iPads are too big for small cockpits

I have an iPad pro 3rd gen, but I kind of like the smaller mini form factor. How much would I be giving up in speed and features if I got a mini 5?

I’ve been waiting for an updated mini because I have a telescope with a computerized mount that allows any iOS device to control the telescope using a compatible astronomy app. Even though I’ve never owned a mini before and have both pros (11 and 12.9) and the XS, I think the mini is the perfect size to strap on the telescope’s tripod (it forms an ad hock WiFi network to communicate with the scope’s mount) and always right there ready to use. Not too small, not too big, just right. Probably could have used the previous generation mini just as well but I figure if I get a updated machine so much the better.

So basically after a brief alignment process you can tap any star, planet or celestial object on the astronomy app and the telescope automatically points to it and centers it in the eyepiece. No more star charts. No more hunting around trying to find a specific object. Man what a time to be alive.

VanNess, That sounds really nice.

I’m gonna wait to have a play with the Mini and Air when they come in store in UK and see which one I like best. Will go for the 256gb option of either. Have pencil from my IPP 1st gen, so will see his note-taking feels on mini v air v IPP 12.9”.

My gut feel is that I wanna go small, but mini is a step too far...this time, and I'll go for the air.

It came out today and looks awesome! I have the Mini 4 and am glad they kept the line alive. Anyone gonna buy one to keep the sales rolling?
I wanted to, but the ridiculous price, poor camera/video recording specs, and internals aren’t much to make me want to get one... besides the A12, Pencil, and 1GB of RAM it’s kind of a poor upgrade, even the Smart Cover colors suck.

Kallum.

Clearly, you made an assumption you shouldn't have made.

I decided it would be quicker to go to the Apple Store next week and get one in person, unless the online store suddenly changes.

You can hardly blame me based on what you said. You kind of left out a relevant piece of information there.

Besides, I was just saying that I thought you made the right decision. If you were that ambivalent about it I was agreeing that it's better not to waste money on a whim.
