I’ve been waiting for an updated mini because I have a telescope with a computerized mount that allows any iOS device to control the telescope using a compatible astronomy app. Even though I’ve never owned a mini before and have both pros (11 and 12.9) and the XS, I think the mini is the perfect size to strap on the telescope’s tripod (it forms an ad hock WiFi network to communicate with the scope’s mount) and always right there ready to use. Not too small, not too big, just right. Probably could have used the previous generation mini just as well but I figure if I get a updated machine so much the better.
So basically after a brief alignment process you can tap any star, planet or celestial object on the astronomy app and the telescope automatically points to it and centers it in the eyepiece. No more star charts. No more hunting around trying to find a specific object. Man what a time to be alive.
Mini is as big as you can go and not be tied to a table or stand.
Just cancelled my Apple Store order and preordered on Bestbuy.com. I had a delivery date of April 5-10 through Apple but Best Buy states it will be ready for pickup on March 29. And FYI if you have an account on best buy use it and you can save $25. I purchased the iPad Mini 5 Space Gray 64GB Wifi for $374.99. Cheers!
Agree, people doing Best Buy shipping do take up to a week to get to the location sometimes and Apple’s shipping services is faster usually on my end at least.Apple usually overestimates on delivery. I wouldn't be rushing to cancel and reorder elsewhere based on Apple's date range.
It’s worth it to me to try with my shipping date of April 5-10 to pickup on March 29 at Best Buy. Plus you get $25 off price with a Best Buy membership.Apple usually overestimates on delivery. I wouldn't be rushing to cancel and reorder elsewhere based on Apple's date range.

Oh wow I’ll have to keep that in mind for future releases about a military discount. I was USN from 98-02. Thanks for the tip!Best Buy and Costco from what I have seen are offering discounts of $25. Not a bad discount for a pre-release. I am able to order through Apple's Military Veterans store so the discount was a little better. So I will wait on Apple.
If that is a regular use case (split screen for drawing) then that is going to be rough... VERY rough. (I tried that a few times on my Mini 4 w/powered capacitive stylus) It's painful on the 9.7 2018 iPad.Dang, I did not think of split screen (how it will look etc). I need that while drawing in Procreate (copying from reference).
I’ll have to test split screen at the store.
Thanks. I was just thinking about this and realized it may be very rough indeed. *Sigh*If that is a regular use case (split screen for drawing) then that is going to be rough... VERY rough. (I tried that a few times on my Mini 4 w/powered capacitive stylus) It's painful on the 9.7 2018 iPad.
Mine says preparing to ship, still 29th - 2nd.My order now has "This item will take longer than usual to ship. We'll send you an update soon"
Anyone else? Date still says 28th - 2nd....
Mine too. But I just got notification that my card was charged.Mine says preparing to ship, still 29th - 2nd.
Mines still “Processing,” so I’m guessing I’ll miss out on getting it by next week.Mine too. But I just got notification that my card was charged.
I did a pickup for Best Buy on the 29th. I’ve done pickups before but never a pre-order pickup. Hopefully they don’t mess it up.My order with Apple showed April 5 - 10 so I canceled and preordered through Best Buy, which shows a date for the 29th. Time will tell if I made the correct choice or not.

Hopefully, the store gets an electronic notification on the 29th to prepare it. That's how it works if the item is in stock. It said pickup is on the 29th but who knows. I've never preordered through Best Buy before and we have no local Apple store.
This is an interesting post. I too have the 12.9 and 11” Pro’s but used to love my mini. I wonder if there’s anyone else who is considering getting all 3 iPad’s? A bit of an overkill but I love the portability of the mini and an thinking about it....
I actually have three iPads: the 12.9 (second generation), the 10.5" and the iPad mini 4. I do use all of them (not at the same time, of course!) and each has served different purposes and needs. Most of the time the 12.9" stays at home and the 10.5 is the one which travels with me, but there have been a few trips where the iPad Mini 4 went with me instead. Right now all of my devices are doing just fine so I won't be replacing any of them but I am very glad that Apple has finally updated the iPad mini.
