I have an iPad mini 2 and for some time have been tempted by the mini 4 due to the Touch ID and 128GB storage. Even when it was at sale prices, though, I couldn’t justify the price just for that. Then the rumours of the iPad mini 5 had me waiting again.
I love that the 5 has modern specs and support for an Apple Pencil (even if it is the old one). But I’m left with the same dilemma. For what I use the iPad mini 2 for, I can’t justify £399 just for Touch ID. I’m sure the specs mean it’ll be faster and it’ll certainly be more future proof, but that’s icing on the cake - it’s not the whole cake. I'm not a "power user" when it comes to my iPad.
And the 128GB storage that had me salivating over the iPad mini 4 is now just 64GB, so it’s something that’s been removed from the temptation table.
I’m glad that there is an iPad mini 5, and I’m over-the-moon with the updated specs, and I know I will buy one - but not today. Until my iPad mini 2 starts to show its age (which it hasn’t yet), I’ll stick with what I have.
If there was a favourable upgrade path from the 2 to the 5 such that the 5 was, say, £249, then I think I’d snap their hands off. But my 2 is only good for about £49 trade in and, frankly, I feel it has more value than that. I’d rather give it to a family member whenever I’m able to get the iPad mini 5 than to give it to Apple for a pittance.
TL;DR what I expected to be an enthusiastic quick decision and immediate purchase became an underwhelming "I can wait".
