You probably didn’t notice. I am able to replicate in all of our iPads with 60hz. Some have it in portrait, some in landscape. Our iPad 10.5 has it in Landscape. It’s just the most noticeable on the mini 6, maybe because its more narrow aspect ratio in portrait..
My 2017 iPad Pro 12.9" doesn't exhibit this behavior in landscape or portrait orientation (as confirmed by slo-mo video).

This is a disaster. Absolutely absurd. Why did Apple install the screens in the Mini 6 like this, are more people using it in horisontal mode compared to the Mini 5 that they decided to swap how it refreshes? I understand that kind of thinking in iPad Pros that are mostly used horisontally like laptops, but iPad Minis are more like books you take with you.

I expect these kinds of things from cheap Android tablets, but not from an Apple device that only gets a refresh every third year or so, especially from an Apple product that's $100 more expensive than the last one.

Calm down, it's not a disaster since so many DON'T have it, and now we are getting flooded with "slowed down" videos. Why are you all slowing it down? If you can't see it without slo-mo for some, then I doubt it's a "disaster". Especially since it could just be a software issue that could fix or at least reduce it.

Some people cancelling orders...Don't overreact and let others judge for you. At least go to an Apple Store to see for yourself.

It seems like you're in denial, and you're ignoring requests to post a video to prove it lol

It looks more pronounced on the mini 6 here, but mostly just because the scrolling is faster there, creating larger gaps between the lines. A still from the video:

What's funny to me is in the time I've owned and used the mini 5 since the day it was released, I never noticed the jelly scroll when in landscape mode, probably because I use my iPads in portrait mode for the majority of my browsing/reading. And maybe since the screen is wider in landscape mode the jelly scroll effect seems to be less pronounced to me.

Speaking rhetorically here, is this likely some sort of hardware thing, like Apple switched the manner of refresh for the display controller or something? Is this refresh/timing thing software controlled and they can just issue a software update to "swap" it back? It just seems so prominent in the way that the majority of people would use/hold their iPads, or at least their minis.

I'm not bothering to post videos because I'm not OCD and am not going to waste time on stupidity. So I guess all the other people who say they don't have it are lying or in denial too?

You're already "wasting time" arguing about it with people here, you seem very defensive about the fact that you can't possibly have it. You could prove yourself right and also give the reassurance to everybody on the fence about buying one by taking 30 secs to do a quick video on it. Not one person saying they don't have it has posted a video to prove it.

Were you satisfied with the mini 4 before you noticed it?
Yes, but I mostly used it in portrait.

I should point out that I find it quite difficult to notice it in normal use. I have to pick a pdf with densely packed text and scroll rapidly.

Do you also notice it on the mini 4 with the video in https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/ipad-mini-6-jelly-scrolling.2313178/post-30351953 ? Because I don’t notice it on my mini 4 in either orientation. I wouldn’t be surprised if I don’t notice it with normal website scrolling, but I would expect to see it with the video if the effect is there. On the other hand it might be good news for me that I’m not sensitive to he effect.
I don't see it with that website on either the 4 or 6, in either orientation. All my observations are based on scrolling PDFs.

Exactly, I’m planning on getting a refund but if there was videos that showing this doesn’t affect all iPad minis that would be great and I for one would get a
Exchange

I thought I didn't have it but upon further inspection I clearly do. Some people may be less sensitive to it than others and some people's use case may not trigger the effect as often. I use my iPad in landscape mode about 2/3 of the time, so I'm not entirely sure this is a dealbreaker for me. I'd honestly rather have an iPad this cute & tiny with a bit of jelly that I barely notice; than lug around my iPad Pro with no jelly. But I'm not denying the issue isn't there. I haven't made my mind up yet, I'll use it for the duration of the return period and hopefully Apple will have issued a statement by then. Perhaps they'll switch their display supplier or fix this on the next batch they ship out

If you are not bothered as you say and you call it stupidity then why are you here ?

Because I have been trying to recreate it to see if I am missing something and when someone posts a new test, I try it. I'm not saying some people don't have it, I' ve already given my theories. But a "dsaster"?

I mean it is useful information for us all to know if there are any unit that doesn’t have it, right now the only theory that holds is that it will be on every unit. It is how displays work and the mini displays seems to have it worse than others as well as having switched orientation it shows up in from landscape to portrait.

So without being sure of there being units that doesn’t show this behaviour we have to consider “can I live with this or not”, if we know there are units that doesn’t have it we can instead have them replaced.

Not everyone will be able to see every visual effect which is why a video is actually useful to be sure.

To really show that there is a difference in how the right and left side of the screen displays the image. In real life usage it becomes very apparent, even if it's not that noticeable when people record it.

By the way I thought that it was just a meme, but some people really seem to live by the mantra "Don't Ask Questions, Just Consume Product and Then Get Excited for Next Products." ;)

I'm pretty sure the refresh orientiation is a function of the hardware layout of the display control lines and not something that can be switched with software, unfortunately. Maybe you can check if the RGB subpixel layout is also rotated by 90 degrees. I would expect it to be consistent with the refresh orientation. RGB subpixels are usually vertical for landscape-oriented displays; maybe they are horizontal on the mini 6.

Enjoy. Compared to the very first video in this thread (where it is obvious), I don't see anythign close to that in mine.

I am just really surprised that Apple made this switch in orientation.

For consuming landscape video content I personally would always want a larger device.

The great thing about the mini has always been portrait mode in your hand like a paperback novel.

It just seems odd that on this particular device they have now done what is best for landscape mode instead.

mini 5 on the left, mini 6 on the right
Well, like Jeff Goldblum in Jurassic Park would've said: There it is. I should have bought a 5 when it launched. Apple seems to prefer landscape use in the Minis now.

If I were you I wouldn't return, but just use the heck out of it. You really seem to enjoy it. If the jelly didn't affect me so much I'd be all over it using it for video editing, reading books, you name it. Which is why I'm having a bigger reaction than I normally would over technology.

You seem distressed over my use of disaster. Maybe take what I wrote with a pinch of salt and read it in context to the rest. I might use more neutral words like 'catastrophe' or 'calamity' next time. 😄

You don’t see it??? It’s not super-pronounced, but it’s definitely there. It’s most visible in between your super-slow scroll and your fast scroll. Maybe it’s better with dark mode. Idk

People are doing those videos to explain what they’re seeing. It’s really distracting/sometimes nauseous for me. But to people who can’t/don’t see it, the only way to show it is with a video. And the compare videos between their 5/6 are to illustrate the difference between the two models.

No. That's auto focus issues. The camera can't keep focus correctly on fast moving items. When I move it slowly, there is nothing there. Not like the very first video in this thread.

My primary use case for the new mini is to read books like a paperback, so I‘m hoping it won’t be bad to live with due to how books screen right to left. It’ll just annoY me with other uses.

I can definitely see the slanted portion here. Will wait a few days and see if it gets fixed by an update. I actually really like it. But I could see it having a horrible resale value, especially if Apple quietly fixes the newer units.
