Scroll up and look at the Mini 5 vs Mini 6 specs

Identical save for rounded corners and the liquid name.

That’s why many of us are speculating that they just call any LCD with rounded corners “liquid” now.
It’s marketing nonsense basically

I get your point now
And those round corners would not show the whole video for sure, those corner parts would be cut off

Anyone else noticing this? I’ve seen 4 Mini’s today and they all seem to have some lag on the left side of the screen when scrolling through pages in portrait mode. Especially visible on pages with a lot of text and when scrolling up and down. I’ve also checked every other iPad model and to me it only seems to show on the Mini…

Apple said this is “normal”, do you think so? Lol

Just got my mini 6 from Amazon and am typing my post on it. I currently own the mini 5. My main, really only reason for upgrading was to get the 6’s landscape stereo speakers. I’ve never cared about bezels, I agree it looks nicer without them but I don’t have my Apple devices to look nice, or, my personal pet peeve - “feel premium”. /rant :D

Anyway, I definitely see jelly scroll on the 6. The mini 5 has barely noticeable scroll in horizontal orientation - i.e. I only notice it because I’m looking for it. The 6 vertical jelly scroll is, to me, quite noticeable in normal use. Not in jerking a Safari page up and down to force it, but just scrolling the page up at a moderate speed.

Frankly, it looks cheap. It looks like some Amazon Fire tablet from a few years ago. I can’t believe Apple thought people wouldn’t care about this. It definitely does not look normal, seeing whole columns of text slanted when you scroll. The underlying techincal reason for jelly scroll may be common. Highly visible jelly scroll? This is the first device I’ve owned, Apple or not, on which I’ve seen it.

I will see if I can abide it before I return, but to me it’s definitely a cheap move by Apple.
Great post 👍🏼 It totally describes up my experience.

I’m in the same boat as you btw… I decided to keep it and accept it is just part of the device, but boy would I like a revised version where this wasn’t an issue. I’d love a 120hz version too - an iPad Mini Pro basically, as this really is the best form factor me in the history of iPads for regular tablet use.

Also for those whose say their units don’t jelly scroll, every Mini does, but some users just can’t perceive it. My girlfriend cant see the jelly scroll on my Mini at all, but my sister sees it very visibly. I wish I was one of those people who didn’t perceive it, as its something I notice every time I interact with it in portrait, at whatever speed I scroll.

I’m feeling I will likely keep it as well. I do vastly prefer the speakers. And I suspect it will be a while before another mini improvement.

For the doubters, it’s probably already been said, but I think it actually looks worse in actual experience than it does depicted in slo mo videos. I wish I could screenshot what a New York Times article looks like scrolling up. It looks like something out of a Bugs Bunny cartoon. North winds blow! (Said in Elmer Fudd voice…blowing the words out of alignment). Liveable. Just not delightful, very un Apple.

So I tried doing this by taking a burst shot with my phone while scrolling. It still doesn’t capture what it looks like (slanted bugs bunny text) but it does give a different form of evidence.

Take a look at the following annotated crop. Because of slow shutter speed we’ve got fading lines and redrawn lines. The veritcal distance between them looks the same - as it should be, because they are horizontal. But you can see that the right end of the lines are darker than the left ends. This is what makes it look slanted. If you turn the iPad mini 6 updside down, it slants the other way.

@makingmark

It's pretty unfortunate for sure (if one is sensitive to it).

I use my Mini 5 in portrait constantly. When side by side comparing them, I realized quickly that it would be a dealbreaker for me. It likely sounds hyperbolic to some, but it was honestly making me a bit queasy/uneasy after a bit of usage on the Mini 6 in Portrait. Very subjective on that for sure. I envy anyone who isn't bothered by it or can otherwise work around it.

And here is same view shot on mini 5. You can see it is better. And this is what I see as the shame. I don’t expect perfection. But I do expect new improved versions to at least be on par for the core function, which is to display content with fidelity.

Also, just looking at the shots from @makingmark -- I know many seem to prefer the rounded corners for some reason.

I honestly don't get it.

I really prefer a rectangular screen.
It tends to match up and complement the content that is usually on screen.
(i.e. "pages" of content)

Subjective again I guess.
Just seems like a change for the sake of it -- not something that's inherently better.

But hey - at least the marketing department gets to call it "liquid" now

These images give a good impression of the excessive blur caused by the effect.

So even if you’re not so sensitive to notice the slanted text the screen might appear “low resolution” or “not as good as you expected”.

Doing a significant amount of reading on this kind of display can be very bad for your eyes.

Apple should do something instead of just saying it is normal

I bought the iPad mini 6 about a week ago. Happily, I can't see the jelly effect. I love the mini form factor, and would have been disappointed if the newest model had a feature that made me feel uncomfortable. The text looks fuzzy when I scroll it in portrait. But it looks fuzzy on my iPad mini 5 scrolling in portrait as well. I suspect I'm poor at scanning moving text (I don't read and scroll at the same time), and so I can't tell the difference between fuzzy text and fuzzy slanted text.

I found it almost like sea-sickness, motion sickness, or vertigo .... when scrolling, the screen either slanted up on one direction or slanted down. Then when you stopped scrolling it felt like your brain/eyes had to adjust, making it all a very strange feeling. When scrolling these forums in dark mode, the pink/purple lines would be almost 1cm higher or lower on the right than on the left, depending on the direction of scroll.

For those deciding to keep it, congrats on finding a device that meets your overall needs. But let’s also recognize that Apple is receiving the green light on this choice by still receiving the money they want. The only thing they listen to is the bottom line, so their hubris around “this is normal, there will be no fix” is rewarded. That’s the reason I personally can’t get on board, even if the 6 is otherwise a great device. They will earn my money after they learn they made a poor engineering choice and need to change it.

Thankfully, the 5 is still an excellent tablet.

I'm not going on a guilt trip over keeping the Mini 6.

I'm sorry, but I think a personal boycott like this is completely ineffective.
They just don't even know you are boycotting their product, nor do they care.

Why on earth do you think I'm rewarding a bad decision or bad hardware? As far as I'm concerned there is nothing wrong with the LCD of the 6. Sure, I'd like OLED or Pro Motion, but I ordered it knowing it wasn't either of those. I'm very happy with my purchase decision!

For any Apple new product later, better wait for few weeks to see what users say first

It’s a shame you can’t automatically trust Apple on quality any more, but their simple return policy reduces the risk on blind buying.

In the last month I’ve spent about $3000 on various Apple products but over $2000 was then easily returned for not meeting my needs or expectations.

I agree about quality. For years I’ve been anxious when purchasing Apple devices, fully expecting something to be wrong. Dead pixels, yellow screen etc etc. Invariably there is something iffy

Apple will never know or care who I am and won't care if one person chooses to not purchase their product. The point of my post is that they do pay attention to how well a product does on the market which, during the Tim Cook era, has shown to be very profit-driven. Complaints about their products are taken far less seriously when they are still selling a ton of them. Why would they "fix" something when they still get what they want from us, the consumer?

Withholding our money is the biggest power we have over large corporations. Accepting the jelly scrolling is a personal choice and within everyone's rights, but it does mean that Apple will be less compelled to change it. One person "boycotting" will not make a difference, it's a compounding effect throughout the market until the bottom line is negatively affected.
