I guess it is much harder to do that with small screen
Not really. The issue is caused by how long it takes to display each row of LCDs, therefore more noticible in landscape because the rows are longer. Apple had to decide which direction the screen would refresh and decided to prioritize landscape scrolling because that’s where the issue would be really visible due to the length of the rows.

Even my 9.7 iPad Pro, with its premium (for 2016) screen, has the issue in landscape, but I seldom notice it because I just scroll it regularly in landscape.

I’ll give an update as I was someone that could see the jelly scrolling and it bugged me but the more I used it I really didn’t notice this too much in actual usage. I can see it‘s there but in actual usage it’s less pronounced because of scrolling speed and I’m not changing directions over and over and I had already resigned myself to worse scrolling because of the lack of pro motion so over time it really didn’t bother me as much.

I also just like every other aspect of the device so much that I’m willing to put up with this aspect. I feel like Apple will switch the orientation next year at which point I’ll probably just trade this version in and I’ll lose some money but I’ll use the device for a year. If I return it, I guess I’d prove a point to them but then I’d be trying to use my larger iPad in situations that I would prefer to use the mini and that would actually bother me more than the jelly scrolling does. If I had a series 5 I may feel differently but my last mini was series 3 so I really needed an upgrade and couldn’t even really use the mini 3 as a roon media controller any more.

I guess the other piece of advice I’d give is just everyone has different sensitivity to display tech so it’s definitely something I’d suggest don’t take people’s word for go and see it for yourself. If you don’t really need a mini you can definitely wait for the next revision but who knows when or if that will actually happen so if you really do need a mini I feel like in this case you may just be punishing yourself over something that may be a minor issue to you in the grand scheme of things. If you do need a mini and this does really bug you I would be shopping for unsold stock or good deals on used mini 5. To me I really do appreciate the bezels and size more than going to my larger iPad or an older mini so I will just trade this in when they make a revision and enjoy what it does well in the mean time.

Can we instead just ask that Apple change back the screen orientation so it’s not so obvious in portrait?

I'm finding that I'm almost always using mine in landscape, the main exception being reading ebooks.

I've always used iPads of all sizes mostly in landscape. I seem to be in the minority, though.

That's basically where I come out. I can maybe see jelly scrolling if I scroll very quickly, but that's so quick I couldn't possibly read anything anyway, so for me it's not an issue. And mine doesn't have the bright spot in the upper RH corner, which seems like an assembly issue. And on the other hand, I love the small bezels, I love being able to use the gen2 pencil on a Mini, I like the fact that my Mini now uses all the same accessories as my 12.9" Pro...lots to like.

Aren't people saying the opposite? I've seen a lot of people say that when jelly scrolling is present in landscape instead of portrait; it's a lot less noticeable because it's spread out across a wide screen. If you look it up you won't find many people who were complaining about jelly scrolling in landscape on previous iPads, but you'll find many complaining about it in portrait on the mini.

Yes. The mini 5 has jelly in landscape but it is far, far less noticeable than the jelly in portrait on the mini 6.

Landscape hides the jelly better. Either that or Apple went REALLY cheap with the mini 6 and put absolute trash display controllers in it.

It’s caused by the length of time required to refresh each line in the display so Apple prioritized the Mini’s display in landscape because those lines being longer would exhibit the issue more. The Mini‘s panel can’t change which orientation the lines refresh and if the panels themselves were manufacturerd vertically instead of horizontally, if you get my meaning, then the issue would be in landscape, and even more noticible because each display line is longer.

On my 9.7” iPP I can force the issue to be visible in landscape, if I scroll it in a way I never would when using the iPad normally, but I can’t in portrait. This is because the screen refreshes horizontally in landscape which is perpendicular to the direction of scrolling.

On our older retina Mini, it jellies in landscape but exhibits expanding and compressing in portrait; both issues are caused by the direction the display lines refresh. The expanding and compressing happens because the scrolling movement is happening the same direction as the lines being refreshed. And again, we have never seen the issue on that Mini while using it normally.

Side note. The issue is present in digital cameras when using the electronic shutter to capture fast movement. The sensors read each line horizontally and when there is fast motion, like a car driving or golf swing, you get the jello effect at the sides and corners because it takes a certain amount of time to read from the top-left to the bottom right; until the recent introduction by Sonly of stacked sensors, the issue even occurred on expensive flagship cameras.

Mini 6 is Liquid Retina
Mini 5 is Retina

What does the liquid mean?
Specs beyond “liquid” look basically identical

Just got my mini 6 from Amazon and am typing my post on it. I currently own the mini 5. My main, really only reason for upgrading was to get the 6’s landscape stereo speakers. I’ve never cared about bezels, I agree it looks nicer without them but I don’t have my Apple devices to look nice, or, my personal pet peeve - “feel premium”. /rant :D

Anyway, I definitely see jelly scroll on the 6. The mini 5 has barely noticeable scroll in horizontal orientation - i.e. I only notice it because I’m looking for it. The 6 vertical jelly scroll is, to me, quite noticeable in normal use. Not in jerking a Safari page up and down to force it, but just scrolling the page up at a moderate speed.

Frankly, it looks cheap. It looks like some Amazon Fire tablet from a few years ago. I can’t believe Apple thought people wouldn’t care about this. It definitely does not look normal, seeing whole columns of text slanted when you scroll. The underlying techincal reason for jelly scroll may be common. Highly visible jelly scroll? This is the first device I’ve owned, Apple or not, on which I’ve seen it.

I will see if I can abide it before I return, but to me it’s definitely a cheap move by Apple.

You compare Air and cheap gen 9, it is the same liquid vs non liquid. liquid has better sharpness, color, no air gap. You pick a YouTube video to sell Mini 6 then you can understand it.

?

I’ve compared Mini 6 and Mini 5 side by side.
There is no functional screen quality difference at all

The 6 has rounded corners and a slightly different aspect ratio and size.
That’s it

Watch the display section, start at around 3 minutes

basically mini 6 has the Air/11” pro display, it is much better display than basic gen 9 ipad

except the jelly part lol

That isn’t because of “liquid” anything.
It’s because the normal iPad screen isn’t laminated, isn’t anti-reflective and doesn’t cover the same color range (P3)

Apple calls these different “liquid” lol

Apple calls these different “liquid” lol

but - they don’t
Scroll up and look at the Mini 5 vs Mini 6 specs

Identical save for rounded corners and the liquid name.

That’s why many of us are speculating that they just call any LCD with rounded corners “liquid” now.
It’s marketing nonsense basically
