at least nasdaq took the bAIt and suddenly I can buy more iPads than I could do yesterday...

Does the upgraded USB-C mean it will work with Apple's displays now? The 6 would only display an exact duplicate of the main screen scaled up when plugged into a Studio Display...
seemingly no stage manager, thus no external monitor support either.

I don't mind about the former, but I'd love the latter.

No Face ID, no Pro Motion or mini-LED - no sale. This is a product that’s priced in pro category for its size, but specced like a consumer product.
While the SoC bump is welcome, as is the more RAM and entry level storage, both are likely because they had to for "Apple Intelligence".

If you are not in the US, the iPad Mini is definitely budget-to mid range hardware for Pro prices.
Was already the case in the last generation too.

This device is crying out for FaceID. I have the 2021 version and I love it but this upgrade is incredibly minimal.

Upgrades?

This is an unbelievable stretch

I'm not sure I can't think of a more pathetic update, save for the AirPodsMax that just switched the port
These bare minimum chip and radio update type updates/upgrades are just meant for new customers or those needing a replacement. I assume the Mini is a low volume product so that’s all I expect. It seems to happen with other product lines too, like MacBooks. There was awhile where it seemed like Apple was going to let the Mini die completely, so from that perspective I’m grateful for every update. Also I do get more app reloads than I’d like with 4GB RAM, so I particularly like the 8GB RAM upgrade (although I’m not positive my app reloads are due to RAM hardware deficiency or particular apps just being dumb).
And of course since the Mini isn’t part of the Pro line it’s not going to get the features Apple reserves for the Pros, like ProMotion and FaceID (although FaceID is not “Pro” for iPhones curiously).

The AirPods Max update was a really weird one, they didn’t even update the chip.

I think the primary reason for upgrades was to give it support for Apple Intelligence. That's pretty much it.
Agreed.

Jellyscrolling is probably still on this new mini. Can’t imagine they would re-engineer the whole display mechanism for a minor update.

The main win for the avg consumer is more base storage for the same price.

I mean all they need to do is put the display controller in a place so it updates over the long distance instead of the short one, like most screens do for this exact reason.

If they still have that flawed screen refresh I might send the 7 I ordered back.

I would have ordered one of these if it still supported a physical SIM card. AFAICS there are no good eSIM options in the UK (The mainstream ISPs are too expensive and hate their customers, the budget operators don't seem to have a practical solution). I like iPad's with a cell connection for on the go tasks where an iPhone is too small and here I don't want to run down the phone battery.

Well, I understand why they revealed this update with the press announcement. Makes no sense to waste the time and money associated with an online event to announce this update.

Why would they even announce this? Just do it quietly.. embarrassing.
This is the quietest they ever announce a new product. It doesn’t get any quieter. They update the store and then put out a press release. If they think it’s a big deal, they’ll put it in an event, but obviously this wasn’t worthy of that in their eyes and would likely be a distraction from the Mac event. I don’t think they’ve ever put out a product without either a press release or an event announcement, so I don’t know why you’d think this was embarrassing since this is as low key as it gets.

Keep in mind, Apple redesigns happen in a cycle. First go the pros, then the Air, then the mini, then the base. The pros have been redesigned. The Airs are up next probably in a year’s time. It’s not yet time for the mini to get a redesign. The A17 Pro alone tells us that this is not a long-term solution. They can’t have that large of a backlog of A17 Pro chips left over. They probably figure their supply will last a year or two, and by then it’ll be time for the mini’s redesign.

It’s highly likely jelly scrolling doesn’t exist as people use it. The only reason jelly scrolling existed in the mini 6 was because they rotated the display 90 degrees, an odd choice since the vast majority of people use a mini in portrait mode. Before that, jelly scrolling would only happen in landscape, but nobody noticed since nobody uses it that way. This time around, they rotated the screen back to its regular orientation so there should be no jelly scrolling at all in portrait mode. People who use a mini in landscape are usually playing a game or watching videos, so there isn’t a lot of scrolling happening.

Not a great bump up but apple is giving me $230 for my iPad mini 6 so I ordered a 256GB in Starlight with a denim folio. I have several iPads parked around my house the mini is my bedroom iPad. I used to travel with it and a MacBook Air but my M4 iPad Pro has replaced the two for travel for me.

I wish Apple would come out with an iPad Mini with FaceID. I loved TouchID but once I got my first FaceID iPhone I was hooked and even though I didn’t need any more performance and was totally happy with the screen I switched from iPad Air to iPad Pro just to get FaceID on my iPad. I know that opinions vary but having FaceID is a mandatory requirement for me now when buying an iPad or iPhone.

I can't see the mini getting FaceID before the Air does. Maybe they will do it when it's time to refresh the design.

Such a disappointment… we need 120hz screens in 2024!. Such a cheapskate “update”.

did apple fire its entire hardware design department or something?
No. They just don’t much care about the mini but they do care about Apple Intelligence (for now), so they spec bumped the mini just enough to enable it to do Apple Intelligence.

I really was hoping for a more daring statement pro Mini. The more «pro» the better. As it is, it might be a self-fulfilling prophecy of low sales as no one really needs to upgrade from Mini 5 or 6 to the 7, ergo it does «not sell» and the Mini gets canned, instead of giving this form factor real wings.
Those of us who wanted an iPad mini Pro read the tea leaves and bought the 11 inch M4 iPad Pro. 😎

That said, when comparing the 256 GB mini 7 to my 256 GB mini 6, the price is $50 lower for a faster processor, faster USB-C port, WiFi 6e, and support for Apple Intelligence (and likely twice the RAM to boot)—hard to argue with that. If I were *just* looking to get a new mini, the price is tempting enough to support an impulse buy, especially if I sold the mini 6 to help reduce the cost. But I wanted a mini Pro, so I went with the 11 inch M4 Pro.
