iPad owners a reason to drop the iPhone

So I peordered the iPad and I've been an iPhone user since the first iPhone and was thinking that now that I can put all my apps and other iTunes media on another device plus all the new features and ipad specific apps will I be more likely to dump the iPhone.

My feeling is yes. I'm not as locked as I would have been because I'll have access to that investment with an even bigger and better experience.

What do you guys think?
 
Personally, unless I could fit the iPad in my pocket, I wouldn't dump the iPhone for a cheaper, less functional phone. There will be too many situations where I'll have my phone with me but not the iPad. I don't think you can replace the iPhone with an iPad.

EDIT: No matter what, I need a phone, and I like having access to the apps and internet no matter where I am.
 
I wouldn't drop my iphone just because I got an ipad. The main reason is I need a phone! The ipad has no phone capability. Also, I need an portable ipod for my music. While the ipad can be used to play music, the form factor is just too large to have in your car easily, or just to be carrying around listening to music out in public.

I think I'll keep my iphone for use outside the house, and have my ipad basically for use while at home.

Different tools may have crossover functions, but each has a use for which it is optimized and there is not a replacement. Why this is a difficult concept for some escapes me, and is the reason behind much of the iPad hate.
 
I'm inclined to agree with the OP. I don't have an iPhone but do have a data plan with Verizon on an Eris. I would rather be mobile with my iPad than a mobile phone. It is silly to pay as much as I am for a data plan that doesn't get much use. I would use it more on an ipad.

I think being able to sync apps, music, etc with multiple devices is a better reason to keep buyin iPhones. Why would I want to get a different phone with different apps and the possibilty of having to double purchase apps.
 
I'm currently in a phone dilemma. I have an ancient 2G iphone. It's fine as a phone and it's great as an iPod/music player, but that's all I use it for. I don't know what everyone else's experience is like, but for me the EDGE network is so slow that any data functions of the phone are all but unusable unless I have a wifi connection. Streaming apps, web browsing, youtube, etc., is all pointless. I'm not in an area with a lot of free wifi.

I've been thinking I'd get an iPhone 3GS the next time the prices drop, and incidentally jailbreaking it (as it becomes possible given new firmware) for use as a hotspot with my (non 3G) iPad. I still feel like these devices have some overlap, though.

I definitely need a phone. I'm definitely not paying for a separate data package on the iPad if I'm already paying a smartphone-level cellular bill. I was even thinking briefly of going with a different smartphone entirely, one that doesn't need to be hacked to use for tethering/wifi, but that still involves a large up-front purchase, a new contract, and a bigger monthly bill than I pay now.

I'm not sure that jailbroken iPhone 3GS + ipad WiFi is the most efficient and cheap combo I could go with, but that's the way I'm leaning unless a better solution presents itself.

I'm not planning on carrying my iPad with me everywhere that I carry my iPhone.

So while I do expect the iPad to be a bigger, better experience, the fact that it won't be in my pocket every time that I need the Interenet (or any app) means that I won't be getting rid of my iPhone.
 
I know the ipad isn't a phone. With newer phones coming out like the Win7 phone im saying it would hurt less to jump since you still have a platform for your apps/iTunes ect.

Then you face the possibility of having to buy all new apps for your Windows 7 phone. For some people, that might be expensive.
 
Here's another option that I'm considering. I already have a dumbphone, iPod Touch and MacBook. If I get a MiFi then I would be able to get mobile internet on the iPod Touch, MacBook and iPad. That would cover most of the situations that I can imagine. In the UK you can get a MiFi relatively cheaply and on pay-as-go terms.

Of course the MiFi would be another device to carry and charge, and having an iPhone that would replace both my dumbphone and iPod Touch would definitely be convenient. But that convenience would have a pretty sizeable cost.
 
I've always wanted an iPhone until the iPad came out. Now, I'm content to use my junky Verizon phone with the iPad.
 
I see some folks dumping the iPhone and netbook/laptop for a cheap cellphone and an iPad with 3G. It would be a cost effective solution for some.
 
the ipad and iphone are two completely different things. thats like saying when the iphone came out to drop a mac as a computer.

Example: After looking at my daily use and needs I think that I could settle with a Krackberry (or anything with pdf and email) with vzn and sell the iPhone but I have a feeling that with the introduction of the iPad we will see the cost of owning an iPhone decline considerably. There are just too many invested in the iPhone now not to be competitive. Cannibalism? We'll see.
 
I've actually considered doing this. I do love my iPhone (2g since i lost my 3g) but there are a lot of other nice phones out there. Now that I'm going to have an iPad that transition might be a little easier. So unless Apple wows me with the 4g (which they probably will) I might be switching over to android, that dell streak is calling my name!
 
I've considered this considering Google Voice would be able to cover the phone part (except emergency calling) as long as the iPad can be jailbroken.

In the end, I don't know if I'd be able to carry the iPad everywhere I go even if it is in a sports pack.
 
I understand where you're coming from OP. I don't plan to give up my iPhone anytime soon but honestly when I think of my use, I mainly use it for web surfing and e-mail. I don't need an iPhone just for that. Another phone could easily do the job.

I have quite a bit of apps on my phone but none of them are mission critical so I wouldn't have to have access to them 24/7. I think you have to look at how you use the iPhone (and the apps that you have on it) and ask yourself if it's something you'll miss when you're not able to carry around the iPad.

I won't be ditching my MacBook Air or my iPhone 3GS when I get my ipad, but I'll be using them less than I do now.
