iPad is not an iPhone
MacPro is not a MacBook Pro
Pickup truck is not a sedan
Chainsaw is not a carving knife

Different tools may have crossover functions, but each has a use for which it is optimized and there is not a replacement. Why this is a difficult concept for some escapes me, and is the reason behind much of the iPad hate.

But Kathy Bates = Scarlett Johanssen still right?

I see some folks dumping the iPhone and netbook/laptop for a cheap cellphone and an iPad with 3G. It would be a cost effective solution for some.
This thought has fluttered through my mind a few times in the past couple of weeks. I get to the edge of the cliff and can't imagine jumping without my iPhone in my pocket. Internet everywhere in my pocket. It hasn't gotten old; it's almost like an appendage at this point.

Scarlett wishes.

I'm currently planning on the 3g ipad and keeping my "dataless smartphone" because of the prepaid prices. I don't want to be locked into a contract and tied to an insane data plan. BTDT.

I was planning on jumping to the iPhone when/if it came to verizon, but really my needs are better suited with the data on the ipad anyway. So spending the money on the 3g ipad just made more sense to me than a new contract.

So for me anyway, the pricing is keeping me from having to buy an iPhone! Probably not what they want to happen.

Oh and the mifi pricing in the states isn't overly great or I'd do that. Again the ipad is cheaper. If I end up needing access on my mbp I will probably just buy the virgin prepad stick. Right now though I think I will be ok with the ipad. I can do everything on the touch so it should work.

I hear ya. The iPhone is very convenient, that much is certain.

If I didn't have an iPhone, I think I would get the iPad with 3G and keep using the simple cell phone that I had before I went with the iPhone.

Completely understand.

Regarding the MiFi, I was thinking of going with the Japan equivalent and continue using my iPod touch and simple cell phone -- pre-iPhone for me. The MiFi approach is nice.

Now that I have an iPhone, I wish that I could share my 3G connection over WiFi. That would definitely come in handy at times. Unfortunately, can't do it without JB'ing the iPhone.

i've had similar thoughts.

have considered dumping my 3GS and getting a blackberry (for physical keyboard, bbm, and better emailing etc) once i've got my ipad

I know the ipad isn't a phone. With newer phones coming out like the Win7 phone im saying it would hurt less to jump since you still have a platform for your apps/iTunes ect.

I LOVE WINDOWS PHONE! OMGosh, there's no copy and paste after all the iterations of WM! How awesome!

iPhone and iPad are companions

There are situations iPhone serve the purpose: public bathrooms, restaurants, etc. iPad, I would use it at: coffee shops, home, work, mall, etc. Plus, there will be apps specifically for the iPad, not the iPhone. Plus, new os update is coming and new iPhone hardware upgrade, too. It would be cool, if xbox 360 live have an app for the iPhone or iPad. However, those games on the win phone 7 will be also on the iphone os devices, too. So, no worries!!

My 1st Post - hey guys.

Since owning an iPhone I have asked myself why aren't all phones this nice to use.

Once my iPad arrives I cannot see me changing brand of mobile phone until there is a better option.

You know, I love my iPhone and want to get an iPad at some point. But now that you mention WINDOWS MOBILE 7, I'm ready to jump the iPhone ship. I mean Windows Mobile is known for awesomeness and ...

OK, I couldn't keep it up. I think Steve is going to make the second iPad look nothing like an iPhone so people will stop comparing them so much. I WILL lug my phone around with me everywhere since I'm one of those people who has no interest in a landline. I bought an iPhone so I wouldn't have to carry around an iPod and a phone, plus all the extra features that have come along since the first iPhone.

Until you show me a way to fit an iPad into my pocket, I'm not on board. It's the same as carrying a little bitty notepad versus carrying a legal pad. Yeah, I can use a computer bag to carry the iPad, but that's still not a pocket. I see the iPad as an extra device, not a replacement.

Get rid of my iPhone, not happening, too many differences. Between my friends, children and grand children I do a lot of texting, Can't do on iPad. I take a lot of photos with the iPhone, can't do on iPad. I've used the barcode scanner app and have saved money because items have been marked wrong, oops, no camera on iPad so the app is useless. The list goes on and on.:)

I text a lot on my dataless Treo too - works great. Dumbphone with a great keyboard!

But the camera part IS something i'm interested in - and why i wish the Touch had a camera.

However, it's not enough to lock me to a 2 year contract (again) with required data. I'm just not going to make that type of long term commitment again (kinda like waiting for this divorce to get done with! LOL!!)

Unfortunately things are changing:(. My friend has an older Treo and no data plan, just texting. She got a call from verizon that she was eligibile for an upgrade HOWEVER, now you are forced into buying the $29.95 per month data plan for the new version with a 2 year contract. My son has the new T-Mobile Android and had to purchase the data plan. It seems that more and more wireless companies are forcing you into the data plans and contracts for new PDA/smartphones. Better keep your old phone if it meets your needs.

Hi Guycross, Welcome!

I agree but since pre-ordering a first gen iPad I feel that I am going to be paying a nifty premium to be on that device and that I should probably scale back on the other just to make things even. Again its just me but I cant shake the idea that their getting me coming and going if I have the iPad and the iPhone. I think for me it all falls back to my basic requirements for a phone.

You know, I love my iPhone and want to get an iPad at some point. But now that you mention WINDOWS MOBILE 7, I'm ready to jump the iPhone ship. I mean Windows Mobile is known for awesomeness and ...

LOL@W7M

Its certainly another device though. One that can certainly not be compared to a phone as far as utility of size goes. But if it preforms the functions of a phone as well then I think we have a hybrid-type situation here. I think it will all soon end up in our pocket anyway (the all in one device) but until that time comes I'm just gonna have to make due and I can't wait to get started.;)

This thread has convinced me to go buy an iPhone 3GS today to replace my ancient 2G.

(Okay, the 2G eBay prices helped.)

I was going to buy an iPhone, but now I've decided to buy the 3G iPad and keep my Sprint phone that is only voice. For portable music, I have an iPod Touch. When I need email/data on the go, I'll use my iPad. I assume I will also be able to use any AT&T wifi hotspot on the Touch since the hotspots are included with the monthly service fee.

Wow, I would have loved to have seen you rocking an iPhone iTouch and an iPad.

I would to see anyone rocking all 3 of them, just so that even the most hardened fanboy would shout sucker!

Here is my plan.

Curent monthly bills

11 Mbps dsl service $40
iPhone 3gs AT&T $90

I'm out of contract as of June so barring some revolutionary change with the iPhone 4g I will either:

Cancel my home dsl and get Clear wire overdrive wimax modem $60
jail break and unlock iPhone port # to tmobile $60

=$120 per month and now I have 4g data for my phone Macbook pro and ipad

or alternately

port my number to a bare bones prepaid voice only sim drop it in my iPhone $20
carry my overdrive everywhere $60

=$80per month for everything but I need to carry both phone and modem for connection to the interweb

or if I'm feeling really hardcore I will port my number to skype and use the skype app constantly running with backgrounder through the overdrive for everything. No voice plan whatsoever. $60 total per month.

Last month I used something like 100 mins so I don't think I would miss it. The only caveat is the txting. Also while fast the clearwire really is not quite there for hd streaming/torrenting etc.

I have a work cell that is unlimited for emergency use so I can do things a little more radically. I can't wait to be out from under my local ISP and AT&T!

You might want to see if this is working - last i read, they won't let you get away with it. AT&T adds the data back the minute they "see" it on the network.

I really wish the FCC would force them to make it so you didn't have to have data, at least when you were out of contract. It stinks.

Have to agree with OP, was a huge iPhone fan for the longest time never thought a better phone would come along but after using Nexus One (Android) for a couple months now I could never go back to iPhone. This phone just blows the iPhone away for me. I did miss some of the games/apps that I had on iPhone though, iPhone has alot more games and has slingbox player to watch tv which are not available on android yet.

The thing is these type of apps I always hated having to use them on a small screen and wished I could have a device with a bigger screen to utilize them and now that the ipad is coming out I think it does solve a problem here for me. I will gladly spend 10 bucks for a great game that I can play on the ipad screen whereas I would never pay 10 bucks for a game I could play on the iphone screen because it was too small to actually enjoy the game.

So now I can have a much better phone (IMO) and also when I have more time on my hands sit down with the iPad and play some of those games that I previously never would have bought on the iphone due to the small screen size and also when i'm in bed at the end of the day can browse the net much more comfortably than previously using my netbook.

The iPad does fill a niche for me, but that niche is in allowing me have a better phone than the iphone (IMO) and also enjoy some of those elaborate games when I have more time on my hands using the iPad as well as surf the net on a bigger screen more comfortably than using a netbook.

And on top of it, I can wifi tether to my Nexus One on T-Mobile for free versus having to spend the extra couple hundred for the 3g version and the 30 bucks a month for 3g service on it :) It really does seem to me like owning an iPad will encourage sales away from iPhone. Everyone bought iPhone in the beginning (including myself) because there was nothing else like it. Now that there are better phones coming out people wan't to move away from iPhone onto other platforms so Apple is really smart here to provide a device that takes advantage of their app store in a better way than their phone as i'm sure alot of people that move away from iPhone will pickup an iPad to satisfy their gaming needs as well as provide a better (bigger) internet experience on the go.

Why would the FCC want to do that?

I want the Parks Service to force you to cut your grass and pull weeds every day too?

My town can do that - wanna see the citation we got last year?

Wow, that's a really bad analogy.

There's no special reason one should be forced to add data to their iPhone. Other carries permit smartphones on their networks sans data. It's just that the "data" parts don't work.
Exactly, why should data be required? The phone still works.... i have a smartphone without data, and frankly, i will never enter into another "contract" that requires data for $30 a month again.

Let me decide if i want to clog the network with paying for 3g or not, but don't require me to pay for something just so you get my money. It's just wrong... and I don't care what carrier you have, its a dirty nasty thing they are doing.
