I'm actually in the same boat as the OP. I use Google Voice as my business line, and the lack of a native application on my phone really irritates me. Sure, the new webapp is great, but not as functional as I'd prefer.

Plus, my work cell phone (which stays in a drawer, because its a BB, we only have BIS, and I won't carry a second device that gets email 10 minutes after my iPhone) is on Verizon, and if I could convince them to let me upgrade to a Droid on my dime, then cancel my AT&T account, and ebay my 3GS, I up in the short run, plus save by actually using the line work is providing.

For some reason, and I know its irrational, but the locked down nature of the phone bothers me more than the exact same thing for the iPad.

This thought has fluttered through my mind a few times in the past couple of weeks. I get to the edge of the cliff and can't imagine jumping without my iPhone in my pocket. Internet everywhere in my pocket. It hasn't gotten old; it's almost like an appendage at this point.

.

It could be any full screen smart phone for me.
The iphone has lots its fun for me but it is an essential tool in my everyday life.
I have tried to figure out why I would need an ipad. I can't see having a lesser phone in my pocket.

If I had an iPad 3G, I could totally see myself dropping the iPhone for a cheaper cell phone w/ no data plan. I'd just use the phone for phone calls, and the iPad for everything else.

The only thing is I wouldn't carry the iPad in my pocket like the iPhone and I'm not carrying a man purse everywhere I go.

The iPad not being very portable means that it will not replace handheld devices. I will probably never get an iPad and just keep using my iPod touch because I can put the IPT in my pocket. I don't need two devices that do the same thing.

For budgetary reasons, I'm selling my 3gs, and buying a Nokia phone and ipad. There is a hotspot app for nokia called JoikuSpot which turns it into a mifi-type device. So I will pay $15/mo for unlimited 3g data for my wifi ipad.

I already carry a Storm2 paid for by work, and while browsing sucks on it, they've greatly improved the typing on it.

I personally sold my iphone last week and went back to blackberry because I feel it is still an all around better messenger device over the Iphone.

The Iphone was an entertainment device that also just happened to be a phone. The Ipad is much better suited for the entertainment piece seeing how much bigger it is.

I just could not justify having both an iphone and an ipad.

Which to get? iPad or the next iPhone

I was wondering if I could ask for some advice, but first I'll give you a little background. I am English and I live in Germany at the moment, but in July I will be moving back to England for Uni.

I was dead set on buying an iPad, however, recently it has dawned on me that I will no longer have my iPhone (I currently have an iPhone 3G). As I'm sure you iPhone users can testify, once you have it, you can't imagine when you didn't have it!

The dilemma I face is to get either an iPad + my basic UK phone + iPod Touch (which I am getting via a trade with my Dad) or just a contract free (don't want to get bogged down in a contract) next gen iPhone. Both of which will probably cost the same at around £450.

It is a nice dilemma to have I know, but it is still a dilemma. Any ideas?

At University I have found my iPhone invaluable at organising my life. I cant imagine life without it, you could use an iPad in the same way. This would however mean you need to carry round a bag to store it, the iPhone stays in my pocket.

iPad + All the other stuff.
iPhone if you need a nice phone that does everything the iPad does, save the iWork suite.

I really don't understand people conflicted about the iPad vs. iPhone decision. The iPhone is a phone, the iPad is not. If you need a phone, get an iPhone. Sure, the iPad might be able to substitute, but it's not a phone.

QFE

Get both iPhone and iPad. Problem solved.

Sure. While you're at it - why not buy a motorcycle and a car.

Problem solved? Hardly. Based on what the OP wrote, it's not an option to get both.

As another said - it really depends on which will have greater value/use for you. If you are running around town and want something portable (i.e. fits in a jacket or pocket) and like the iPhone experience vs any other phone you could get - get the iPhone.

If you can get by with a regular phone in favor of having a more robust device that's still portable but isn't going to be AS portable - get the iPad.

No one can really answer this for you because it all comes down to your preference and usage.

iPad + new iPhone would be nice, but if you have to choose one I would say the iPhone is more useful in more situations. I couldn't live without my iPhone, but I could live without an iPad.

if it were one or the other and you do not have an iPhone, then I would say an iPhone would be more important to me then the iPad. If you are just looking to upgrade your iphone or get the ipad, then I would say the iPad is more important then an iPhone upgrade.

I assume that your current iPhone is locked to a German network. I vaguely remember German law requires phone companies to unlock phones for a fee. Is that right? If so couldn't you keep the iPhone when you come over to the UK?

iPad + phone + Touch vs
...... + iPhone +........

ie
iPad + my basic UK phone + iPod Touch vs contract free 4G iPhone.

I'd go ipad, basic phone, Touch. That way you get the iPad, a working phone, and the iPhone/Touch sized apps, music etc.

Currently I will be iPad + iPhone......

However when my contract expires in August I think I may be iPad+HTC Evo 4G

well if you continue with your iphone ownership you will not loss anything an can just carry on

if you go ipad you might find that the features mix (sans iphone) is not right.

personally I'd go iphone as it is much more flexible and is a phone...cue the usual only carry it in your pocket etc that you know but is still right!

Do you already have a laptop, OP? If so, I would recommend the iPhone and skip the iPad. The iPad would pretty much duplicate what your laptop can do. Also, the iPhone is something you can carry around everywhere all of the time very easily, while the iPad would require some sort of bag to carry it.

Thanks for all the replies. This is a really difficult choice! Currently I am leaning towards the iPad+normal phone+iPod Touch. The reason being that as I think about my usage, I don't really call or text that many people on my iPhone. I am more likely to use email or Facebook instead. My girlfriend (who I'll be living with) has just bought a 3GS so if I need an iPhone fix I will 'borrow' hers.

Yep. I could do yes, but it would not be financially worth it, as there is still a year to go on the contract sadly.

Either way, I will try and hold out on doing anything until the June keynote. I will probably change my mind a dozen times by then

Well i get a new iphone every year and im getting the ipad so both!!!

Believe me, I wish I could! :D But I need to save about £1500 for a road trip from New York to Vegas for my 21st Birthday. At this point I'm hoping I just find a wad of cash addressed to me!

Here is how i would go about it. Do you all ready have a iphone? do you plan on gettin the 3g for the trip? Do you have a ipod?

If i had to chose i would get the ipad 3g if i where in your position because i have a 3gs
