Is it really selling less?

It's sold out everywhere here, while the 10.5 is readily available.

With Apple pushing the iPad as a laptop replacement, I would be surprised if they kill it off.

Anyway, it's definitely my favorite iPad.

I hardly ever see the 12.9, I live in NYC, it's been out for a couple years now

I have the first ten 12.9" iPad Pro and I've wrestled with the idea of trying out the 10.5" but having not had hands on time with it i fear i would regret it so i think i will be sticking with the 12.9" when i upgrade to the 2nd gen iPad Pro next month. IOS 11 looks like it will be great for the 12.9" as well with the bigger dock and better multitasking. Congratulations on getting the 12.9" Pro, the iPad really is a great tablet! in fact i would go as far as to say it's the best on the market.

Mike

What do you plan on doing now relative to the 12.9?
Mostly content consumption, i.e., surfing, comics, videos. My kids will be doing homework using google docs or specific sites like tenmarks. My usage will be mostly holding it, or in my lap. Desk usage will be a rarity. I'll also be travelling (flying and driving) with the iPad but also a laptop. My office apps will be Excel, and some word (mostly excel).

My laptop is the device that I use for all my heavy lifting, whether its using GotomyPC to remote into my work PC, or connecting directly to servers via RDP (and VPN).

I meant will you keep the 12.9?

LOL, sorry I totally wiffed on your answering your post. Tbh, I'm not sure but I think if you followed my line of thought through this thread, the commonality is that the 10.5 is more mobile, and holdable. Since mobility is something I want, I think I'm leaning to exchanging it

The 12.9 is so easy to hold. Actually easier for me, as it can rest on your whole hand in the back.

The 10.5 is so cramped to use. You have to zoom all the time and multitasking is a joke on it.

Up to now, the benefits of having a 12.9 Pro have been pretty much hidden except for the obvious benefit of a 12.9 screen. Not many knew or cared about it having 4GB RAM (exclusive to the 12.9 until the 10.5 was released) nor the fact that it can display 2 full iOS apps (not the minimal phone version of the apps) side-by-side. The release of iOS 11 will generate greater interest and demand for the 12.9 Pro. The starting storage size of 64GB and frequent sales will also increase interest in it.

I wonder how many of the people who are complaining about the bezels on the 12.9 Pro actually own and use one. The bezels on the 12.9 Pro are fine. And considering how some complain about the overall size of the 12.9, shrinking the bezels but not the overall size doesn't seem like it would satisfy many people.

I agree with this...

The 12.9 bezels are sometimes not enough for me. I was playing a game that ran in portrait mode, and holding it at the bottom can be cumbersome while holding the side (even with the bezels the way they are) with my thumb running parallel to the screen, my thumb sometimes hit the screen and was causing problems.

Glad it's working out for you. For me, there was never any dilemma, because I draw in Procreate, but glad that more people like the 12.9". Actually, I'm a bit scared that Apple might kill the larger model because the smaller is selling a lot better. I know a lot of Apple podcasters were actually surprised the 12.9 also received an update.

Hope the larger one sells well. I would love that it gets the 10.5 bezel treatment, so that we get a 13.5" in the next version.

I agree gen 1 12.9 was a poor seller (especially after the 9.7 pro came out), and I heard some of the podcast banter you are referring to. I think gen 1 12.9 was a hard sale, because iOS productivity/utilization was weak for it, slow dev support to update to 12.9, and the fear of declining iPad sales...

Now iPad sales are starting to increase, dev have had nearly 2 years to update to 12.9 (and pro features in general), and iOS 11 is a big step forward. I imagine sales are shifting hard to the 12.9. I still think 10.5 is getting more sales on this gen, but I wouldn't be surprised to see that shift in favor of the 12.9 in 1 to 2 years, especially if more people start abandoning their laptops

Have we seen 12.9 native apps? I'm not up on any of that stuff, and I've only heard people complain about how many apps are still not optimized for the 12.9 form factor.

I was having the same thoughts, how do you apply it to your workflow in conjunction with your iMac? Is it heavy to read from? If not an artist would it pay to get the 12?

As I said in a different post - I am yet to see an app that is not 12.9 optimized. If your app supports split-screen, it adheres to Apple's adaptive design rules and it is fully optimized.

Actually, the last app that was not optimized for me was Comixology :) But they support 12.9 now so that's fixed. Everything else is fully supported. Every productivity app - from Office to Photo apps - is optimized. So are all standard apps like YouTube, Pinterest, Dropbox, all Google apps (from Docs to Hangouts), every Microsoft app, etc.

The only apps that are not optimized are games (most of them, at least) but it's really hard to notice it in games due to all the motion and lack of a status bar.

I'm looking at my apps and Gumroad and Patreon are the only ones not optimized, but their iPad apps are just streched iPhone apps anyway.

Glad to hear Apple was willing to take care of it for you. It sucks when you spend a bunch of money on something only to realize shortly after that it's not quite what you were going for--when I'm in that situation, the longer I wait to admit to myself, the more it bugs me. I had convinced myself that I was not going to upgrade my iPad AGAIN from the 9.7" Pro to the 10.5" Pro this year, but I knew that's what I really wanted to do. Eventually, there I was, trying desperately to convince my wife that I should sell my 9.7" Pro and get the 10.5". (Right after buying a new house!)

She eventually agreed though, and after the usual pain in the butt of selling my 9.7" and replacing all my accessories with new updated 10.5" versions, I'm happy as a clam now. Love the new Pro models, no matter which size.

I’ve had the 10.5 since the day it showed up in stores. I’ve never had to zoom in on it once. The 12.9 is clearly better when you want two apps on screen at once but that is not how I normally use the iPad. If the 12.9 is a better fit for someone, that’s great but it’s misleading to call the 10.5 as cramped.

Well, I've largely kept quiet about my buyers remorse over the 10.5. Buyers remorse is probably the wrong term, since I really did like the 10.5, but the idea of the 12.9 model kept nagging me, like a mosquito bite that wouldn't stop. I've let it me known in a handful of posts that I was waffling between the two models, but as time went on, and my 14 days of ownership, turned into 21, 28, etc etc, I looked to be content with my purchase and I largely was.

I remember when the Apple first announced the 12.9 and I almost bought one then, but I held off. When the 10.5 mode hit the streets, I thought now was the time. I was content with the purchase until I came to the apple store to pick it up, and it in the apple store, the 10.5 looked diminutive. I thought I made a mistake, but I kept my mouth closed. I should have then opted for the larger model, but I didn't.

A month and a half later for giggles, I packed up my iPad Pro, drove to my local apple store and they allowed me to exchange my 10.5 for the 12.9. I figured what's the worst that can happen, I walk out with my 10.5 again and as I said, it was a fabulous tablet.

To be honest, I was completely dumbfounded when they said they would allow me to exchange the 10.5, for the 12.9, even though I bought it back in June. Yes, I was hoping something positive could come about it, why else would I show up at the apple store with my iPad Pro boxed up, but I was resigned to the fact, that I had missed my window of opportunity. Yet the manager at the Apple store allowed me to "trade up"

Kudos to Apple for such a great customer service move, words cannot really express how grateful I am. They had no reason to help me, but they did.

I'm very happy with my purchase, the screen is gorgeous, the iPad is FREAKING HUGE  but its I wanted.

Some of the things I liked about the 10.5, i.e., its mobility, will need to be accommodated with the larger form factor. I'm wondering if I'll suffer any sort of hand/arm fatigue from using it upright (as opposed to a desk), but overall the screen is the size that I think will enhance my enjoyment.

tl;dr I kept quiet about my desire for 12.9, when I shouldn't. Apple's top notch service allowed me to upgrade when I didn't deserve it.

Boo ya! Maflynn on that 12.9 train

I love my 12.9 gen 2 too, and wasn’t overly impressed with 10.5 coming from 9.7. Never mind i was having problems finding a decent panel.

With this, i am really happy. And nailed it first shot with that panel lottery.

And loving it way more than my run with it for gen 1, largely bc of screen I think (and iOS 11 with ProMotion)

I got apple Smart Keyboard too, Smart Cover, and silicone case (not compatible but blocks flash and mic and non issue for me i love this case too much from my 9.7 pro i had to have it again despite compromises, i could mod it down the road to accommodate but i dont know that ill bother)

It really has consumed A LOT of my time over my nTB tbh, and i dont see that stopping

For casual things, etc. 12.9 makes that much of a difference to be on par with the laptop

My 9.7 really feels like a mini now, but i still like having it around.

It is not misleading. I repeat: the 10.5" is a very cramped experience and in a few years small tablets will be considered not good at anything just like netbooks except reading, but then Kindle is the way to go anyway).

This is why phones got bigger also. The trend is bigger screens on all touch devices

If you have not used zoom yet, you may not have used multitasking. It is just plain ridiculous to see those two small windows side by side. Useless, really.

I don't think so, perhaps you should try an iPad Mini which is even smaller.

I do think the 10.5 is a nice balance of power, size, and portability.
[doublepost=1502299522][/doublepost]Both form factors have their place, the 12.9 provides an expansive canvas to work from, but its less portable, less holdable. The 10.5 provides a smaller form factor (smaller then the 12.9), and is more mobile. I'm finding, that going into meetings with the 12.9 is quite distracting, and takes up more space then perhaps I'd prefer

It’s fine if you prefer the 12.9, but statements like “you may not have used multitasking” are not called for. I’ve had every iPad since the very first model, including the 12.9 and I’ve used multitasking. But I don’t use it most of the time. The only place you could even remotely call cramped is when using multitasking with the software keyboard. If I want more space I use my iMac. But I don’t want a tablet the size of an iMac, bigger isn’t always better.

I'm curious how you use it in meetings? Do you take notes with the pencil or keyboard?

Right now, I don't have the ASK, so any typing would be done via the on screen keyboard. I don't use the pencil [yet] to take notes.

Its mostly used for excel, word and PDF during the meetings as we need to reference certain documents, as we work through the project I'm active on.

I've not used the multitasking feature very much, but I have used it, and when I did, I was quite happy with it in the 10.5 iPad. I can understand that it may not work for you, and that's fine, but your annoyance with it, doesn't mean it doesn't work for everyone.

I have 13 days, and the khomo smart cover should be arriving tomorrow, so I'll give it some time before making my decision final. Either way, I do appreciate both the pro 12.9 and the pro 10.5 camp, because the opinions and recommendations from both groups, are helpful and informative.

Khomo must be making a killing. I hope they eventually introduce a new cover that is even more similar to apples old silicone.

The iPad mini has not been updated, which could be due to its small size. I had a mini for very short time years ago, because it was not good at anything.

I think the 10.5" balance things wrong. It is slightly heavier than the 9.7" and Air 2 without bringing something useful. I find the 12.9" is easier to hold and handle.

I think the lack of updates to this model, is definitely because of the iPhone 6/6s/7 plus. The larger phones ate into that product

I'm just the opposite, I find the 10.5 to be more holdable, YMMV and one size doesn't fit all ;)

I agree. I intend to move from the 6S to the 7S Plus, if indeed that is one of the phones released. The 9.7 now feels "mini-ish."

I do recommend the pencil, especially with great apps like GoodNotes for annotation, lots of threads here on those. I was sceptical as I am not an artist but the freedom of almost writing anywhere on the screen has convinced me how useful it is. I think you can also annotate on office docs if you have a 365 sub.
