This is THE reason i upgraded from 2017 ipp to the 12.9 M1. I HATE a watching movies and videos on the treadmill or in my room when the room is dark. SO distracting and visually hard to watch During nighttime or dark scenes. Glad to see this.

edit: the only thing that concerns me is the “blooming”. I haven’t been concerned but in this video either your lens is oily or that is some very strong “blooming”. I know there will be some, but that seems excessive and probably more distracting than a whole brighter display. I’m hoping that’s just grime on the camera. I will see tomorrow. fingers crossed ?
Its probably to do with the camera like you said or it’s the settings. The camera probably exaggerates the effect in general.
I was just trying to capture the black comparisons in the video. The blooming is hard to see in videos and you would need to check it out in person.

Nice case!
Is it the official Apple one?

That folio case looks crazy good! I did not expect that color to be so pretty.
I jist ordered the same myself. (Dark Marine blue right?)
I ordered this morning so it should arrive in the late afternoon ?
Colour is called deep navy, offical apple folio case, checked out all the colours in store, it was out of blue or green, once I saw that sexy blue colour it was all over. ?

Here you go ??

Spot on, cranked my brightness up to full On black scenes, no blooming, only deep inky blacks, right up there with my oled tv, this screen is unreal. ?

Just received my 2021 M1 12.9" iPad Pro. Upgraded from 2018 11".

First impressions:
  • The screen is massive! Compared to my 11"
  • Colours are definitely more vibrant. Black is deep black, close to the OLED screen on the iPhone 12 Pro
  • There is a slightly halo effect around the edges of the screen. It seems to give a three dimensional impression that the screen is fading/blending into the black borders. I suppose that's how mini LED screens look? Tried to take a pic of the edges but it's too hard to capture on camera. Maybe I need to get an eye test LOL
  • Apps and webpages open instantly
Only took a few photos cos the overall design is identical to the last few years and there's nothing much to rave about LOL

And yes I've installed a screen protector already. Plan on applying the dbrand swarm skin soon.

Keen to see how you've set up your new iPads and what you think of the mini LED screen and M1 chip!
Thanks for the early review from down under! I can’t wait to get mine in the morning.

So you are actually saying this mini led is much much better than you expected considering you have been very strong wanting OLED and not mini led on the iPad. Glad to know you are happy with this now :).
I am so looking forward to getting my hands on my new toy tomorrow. With my luck it will deliver while I am at work for the afternoon/evening, thankfully my son will be home to receive it for me.

I’ll be the first to man up and admit I was totally wrong, this MINI LED screen is the Real deal, prefer it over my oled tv.

Trust me you won’t be disappointed ? if anything these youtubers were playing down the screen quality ?

The fading effect on the edges isn’t a good sign, I believe those are called bleeding edge or light bleed and usually happens when there is enough gaps between the glass and the lcd panel, and only affects lcd panels. Oleds do not have this issue because the screen is much thinner.
I usually only see this on cheaper phones, monitors etc…. Was really hoping the iPad Pro won’t have this issue. It’s pretty much inevitable, if you compare to previous iPad pros they have the same issue but not as predominant.

Barely noticeable and no light bleed on my unit ?

for me the blacks are deep and the panel is amazing. Really, the next thing for display tech is micro led but thats years away until then I rather have mini-led as it as less flickering and no burn in and its more colour accurate.

Agree, apple has really knocked this mini led display and calibration out of the park, honestly didn’t think it would be this good

Alright so now the real question is not is the screen amazing and everything anyone could ask for at the moment but rather - do I want to buy this and be spoiled to the point that I can’t use my other screens anymore?

@Jensend please read after all your terrible comments about how extremely crappy the screen would be.
No need to reply. Just read and cry a little because you were so wrong.
I never said it would be extremely crappy. There is some blooming, as can be seen in one of LFC2020’s images. He may like it more than his OLED, but that isn’t proof that I would. I think in a pitch black environment, I would prefer my OLED for most HDR content. OLED TVs are extremely close to reference monitors within the range of brightnesses they can show, and the range most real-world HDR content is mastered at and I don’t think a theoretically perfect display would look significantly better than OLED.

I definitely think I’d vastly prefer the mini-LED in the new iPad than the one in my iPad 10.5” in 99% of circumstances. My 10.5” looks awful in darker scenes in movies.

Which image? I never posted a image of the display, in person there is no blooming ? these photos and videos don’t do it justice, at full brightness I’m not getting any blooming on blacks ?

These photos and video uploads are making it look like there is blooming when there isn’t.

Sorry, I meant Boardiesboi’s image.
Some of the blooming is from the camera lens, but not all, because the black bezel above the text is significantly darker than the bloom below and just above the text. If there wasn’t bloom, you could barely see where the bezel ends and the screen starts.
(and yes, I realize the photo exaggerates the bloom — it wouldn’t be as noticeable in person)

Can guarantee you it’s all from the camera lens, I cranked my brightness to full and played the LG oled black video in hdr on YouTube, no blooming at all.

tired to take a video for you but got lens flare from my iPhone and made it look like there was blooming when there wasn’t

Can someone comment on the non-HDR brightness of the mini LED vs. 2020/2018 ipad pro screen? For example if you just turn on max brightness on a white background, are the brightness levels the same or did the mini LED manage to be brighter?
