Can guarantee you it’s all from the camera lens, I cranked my brightness to full and played the LG oled black video in hdr on YouTube, no blooming at all.

tired to take a video for you but got lens flare from my iPhone and made it look like there was blooming when there wasn’t
As I said, if it were just lens flare, the black bezel wouldn’t be as visible (the bezel is barely distinguishable from the screen on the right side of the image). But the camera is definitely greatly exaggerating the brightness of the bloom.

But I do see that it probably looks ridiculous that someone without the screen (me) is arguing with someone who does.

I’m just saying there is bloom. I can’t judge how noticeable it is, of course.

This is exactly what I said before. But @Jensend just doesn’t believe it because he probably can’t afford a new iPad.

Nah, I can afford one, but I prefer the smaller size. I think the mini-LED display would be a huge upgrade over my iPad Pro 10.5”. I’m skeptical that it would be better than my OLED TV for most content (disregarding size).

Will apps need updating to support HDR or is that handled by the system? Eg increased brightness in highlights would need different tone mapping etc

Can someone comment on the non-HDR brightness of the mini LED vs. 2020/2018 ipad pro screen? For example if you just turn on max brightness on a white background, are the brightness levels the same or did the mini LED manage to be brighter?
Mini led seems way brighter to me, no way I could use it at max brightness indoors, I could be wrong though.

Only way you’ll believe me is if you test it out for yourself.

This is THE reason i upgraded from 2017 ipp to the 12.9 M1. I HATE a watching movies and videos on the treadmill or in my room when the room is dark. SO distracting and visually hard to watch During nighttime or dark scenes. Glad to see this.

edit: the only thing that concerns me is the “blooming”. I haven’t been concerned but in this video either your lens is oily or that is some very strong “blooming”. I know there will be some, but that seems excessive and probably more distracting than a whole brighter display. I’m hoping that’s just grime on the camera. I will see tomorrow. fingers crossed 🤞
As a photographer I would say that the image on the displays are overexposed and likely overblowing the bloom. For instance, black on a regular iPad never looks that bright either. Imagine the bloom looking as bright as black on a regular iPad and that will probably give you a better idea.

I know on my LG C9 that in a dark room when there are really bright areas on the display, even then the HDR brightness can make some faint blooming around the edges. But I think it's more like how it appears in your eyes, not as much on the display itself. It's like it's so bright by comparison it bleeds over in your eyes. I thought it was weird but when I got closer it didn't look so bad. On camera I imagine there could be some of that happening. It's like when you film the sun or a flashlight in a dark room, almost like a flare around it. But we'll see soon.

Just received my 2021 M1 12.9" iPad Pro. Upgraded from 2018 11".

First impressions:
  • The screen is massive! Compared to my 11"
  • Colours are definitely more vibrant. Black is deep black, close to the OLED screen on the iPhone 12 Pro
  • There is a slightly halo effect around the edges of the screen. It seems to give a three dimensional impression that the screen is fading/blending into the black borders. I suppose that's how mini LED screens look? Tried to take a pic of the edges but it's too hard to capture on camera. Maybe I need to get an eye test LOL
  • Apps and webpages open instantly
Only took a few photos cos the overall design is identical to the last few years and there's nothing much to rave about LOL

And yes I've installed a screen protector already. Plan on applying the dbrand swarm skin soon.

Keen to see how you've set up your new iPads and what you think of the mini LED screen and M1 chip!

Can you shed some light on these issues mentioned in this review by Brad Colbow ?

/ minute mark 4:23 start

It seems a bunch of people are saying that there is noticeable shadow around the edges on lighter pages / settings and there is also talk about the ammount of space between the glass and the screen because this product is thicker then it's predecessors.

Thanks in advance if you can test it out.

There is a slight halo shadow around the edges, honestly you don’t even notice it after a while, the screen doesn’t look like it’s apart from the screen to me.

Good to know because I was worried after reading the ipad pro subreddit from a bunch of people that already own it , maybe apple can fix it via a software update because it doesn't seem to be hardware related..

My guess: The zones overlap and blend into each other. They have soft edges. The zones around the edges have no other zones to overlap with / blend into. Probably the only way to “fix” it with software would be to lower the brightness of all the pixels but the ones near the edge, but that would lower efficiency and maximum brightness.

Yea that makes sense but i'm still dissapointed because these screens really need to be flawless in this day and age when you pay such premium for , people really need to shed some more light onto this issue so far just Colbow went in-depth with the screen on these issues.

Sure are, not seeing any blooming on black background with white text, whenever I try and take a photo to prove it my camera blows out the white text and makes it look like there is blooming when there ain’t, only way to experience this amazing screen properly, is to see it for yourself in person.

No camera is going to do this amazing screen justice.

As far as I’m aware, it’s the best consumer LCD available for watching HDR video*, and gets brighter than any OLED, so it would be impossible to accurately represent it on any other display.

*aside from resolution and size considerations

What a turn, Liverpudlian, one of the prominent XDR sceptics scores an own goal, now a happy XDR owner.
I'm calling it, team Believers vs. Sceptics 2:1, game over. Can't wait for mine, arriving today.
I can honestly see a lot of people changing their tune, couldn’t believe this screen could be this good, now that I’ve seen it in person, I’ll happily buy another apple calibrated mini led device.

Could someone test a picture/video with a starry sky? Very appreciated. 🙂
Honestly as soon as you take a photo or video of the screen the camera blows out all the white bits and makes the photo or video look nothing like it’s meant to.

Highly recommend checking out this amazing display in person if you really want to see how good it is.
