Not happy with Apple at all since this is so OBVIOUSLY a general product issue. But my iPad is also impossible to live without, so I have to admit I’m also pondering a new M1 model and use my current as trade-in.
It can’t be sold used because of the excessive light bleeding
Look at the devices on Swappa resellers and some regular sellers post them and they all have bleed.

man not sure what I should do-- maybe I should hold onto my 12.9 gen 2 since it is the last of the classic style that also has 120hz, and can always be jailbroken due to a10x having a permanent hardware exploit

and wait for the 2021 11" and go from there.

if i had touch disease i would get rid of this thing no doubt

Sometimes when I trade hastily, I regret it. Plus this could always just be a dedicated YouTube tablet with the Smart Keyboard propping it up always

$355 would be sweet, but I think this would still get used even if I get glued to 11" 2021 as a real tablet

Still, I find having three tablets kinda ridiculous but hey maybe there's a use case for it

I'm keeping mine for running iPadOS betas.

I have the Logitech Combo Touch for the Pro 10.5/Air and the keyboard/trackpad portion itself actually works fine with the 2017 Pro 12.9. It's nice that I can easily swap the Logitech keyboard/trackpad between 2017 12.9 and 10.5.

That’s not a bad idea either!

I wish apple could share their binning ideas with Monitor manufacturing companies all over the globe. Because IPS panels in the PC monitor space (Essentially sucks to put it lightly) People say IPS has downsides like light bleeding, glowing etc.

Apple seems to bin the panels really good. And we get a very nice display. Yet if we buy a $2,000 dollar 4K 144HZ PC monitor that is IPS, we have to live with it. Glowing and light bleed is normal, even severe light bleed. Even dead pixels.

I have owned numerous IPS monitors to use with PC gaming systems. And they all really suck. I have owned at least (5) apple products all with IPS panels. And these apple IPS displays have none of the downsides that IPS is supposed to suffer from.

From what I’ve noticed personally over the past years, and from my readings throughout different forums, the problem does seem to be heat and battery related.

The touch screen is noticeably unresponsive for 2 seconds (sometimes 10+ secs) when the device warms up. Loading up a demanding app or website while the device is plugged in can replicate the problem most of the time. The fact that the issue is only happening a year or so after a new/refurbished is opened is probably due to the battery inside swelling up, caused by heat (possibly overcharging).

I bet the spotlighting issue is battery related as well, where the swelling puts pressure against the edges of the screen.

I still haven’t reached out to apple about this issue, since most people here don’t seem to have any luck getting a free replacement for devices that are way out of warranty. I’m starting to believe that any replacement will eventually get this problem.

It would be great if they could just do a free battery replacement. I think this would work out just as well as a full device replacement, for the unresponsive touchscreen issue. It might even fix the spotlight issue as well.

I’m still rocking my 2017 iPad Pro 12.9 as my main computer despite these issues.

To test my theory I contacted apple to service my battery, which reported as 85% health during remote inspection, and they ended up replacing the entire device rather than just the battery despite having spotlighting issues on a third of the screen as well as an unresponsive touchscreen from time to time. In the end it costed me $100 plus shipping to fix this problem, which is a great deal in my mind because I was getting a bit fed up with the touchscreen issues. This is the second replacement I’ve gotten from apple (once before while the device was still under warranty). I’ll be taking better care of the battery on this new device and see if it lasts longer this time around.

Lucky you whenever I talk to support to get my battery aka device replaced they claim it’s at 91% health… it’s been like this for over a year lol. 4 year old iPad Pro 10.5 that I can barely get 5-6h SOT on with light usage

I still believe that a battery replacement will resolve the spotlight and touchscreen issues reported here. It’s just a shame that we have to rely on apple’s whim to get a battery replacement that customers are willing to pay for. My backup plan was to get a battery replacement at a third party repair shop.

After almost exactly one year of regular usage of my replacement device, the spotlight and unresponsive touchscreen problem is back. My battery health is 83% with a 254 cycle count.
