issues after issues. First spotlights followed by touch screen followed by charging and constant drop in hdmi connection.

To me it seems possible that the touch issue is unrelated to the light bleeding / spotlighting issue. It might be (or have been) a software issue where the system deliberately ignored touch input because it registered it as accidental.

Touch screen issue is usually a hardware failure - when it starts you can reset firmware or upgrade/downgrade and it won't fix the problem. This issue is covered pretty well around these forums. Dates back 4 years! Still never fixed. Shame on Apple, you lost many dedicated customers (me included)!

I really hope all these issues get covered under a hardware failure policy. It's obviously not user error.

the 2017 Pro's definitely seem plagued with one thing after the other - it's really disappointing. Especially when it comes time to buy new hardware. Many of us don't want to.

I still feel lucky I 'only' have spotlighting on my 12.9"

I had the touch screen issues and spotlighting on my 2nd gen. iPad Pro 12.9". I got rid of it because it was barely usable.

Now I'm using a Surface Pro 7. Great device; covers all my use cases (tablet, laptop, desktop).

Same. Mine is also iPad Pro 12.9" 2nd generation. Somebody should fill a class action.

Hello,

Same issue is happening to my 12.9 inch iPad Pro (2017) 1.5 years old and out of warranty . It started with 2 or 3 bleeding lights and now it has more than 12 bleeding lights at left edge(side of smart connector). I have also posted in another forum and i hope it does not get any worse.

I have an appointment to replace the replacement today. This is unacceptable for the costs of these devices. $350 trade-in is laughable but it truly is not funny. :-(

I went to DC only to find out that my drive was worthless as they did not have replacements for my version/size unit. The guy called the store 5 mins from my house and put me in cue to go there that day to exchange it. A long winded day and 3 or more hours later, I came home with yet a 3rd unit. I made a phone call to an Apple supervisor and I am locked in should this ever happen again. Stay on them, raise your voice. There is a solution but you have to be persistent. Good luck all.

Hello everyone, I had and am having the same issue(s) and thought sharing my experience so far could be interesting, though first I’m very curious about these, so please let me know:

- Have you used the magnetic Apple smart cover or other magnetic cover/case with the iPad before the problem’s development? I have been using the Apple one continuously before the issue.

- What model is your iPad more exactly? Specifically, is it wifi-only or cellular? I have no screen issues with a cellular model but had the issue twice with the wifi-only model.

Let’s send as much feedback to Apple about this as possible. Might be the only way to eventually have an extended repair / replacement program started. Quick and easy: https://www.apple.com/feedback/ipad.html

Now to the details: I had bad spotlighting / backlight bleed on a 2. generation iPad Pro 12.9” 256GB, on it’s portait-left side or edge, the same as everyone else. Several spots, strongly visible. It was purchased in July 2017 in Austria, where the consumer law protection provides 2 years of warranty. After being on the phone with Apple support, being tranferred to other employees who diagnosed the device remotely, I was told to book an appointment in an official Apple Store in Austria, then get back to the support employee with the appointment details so that he can instruct the store to have the replacement unit in stock and replace my iPad right away. Because of this I could successfully replace the iPad in an official Apple Store in Austria in March 2019, within the 2-year period, for free. (The new unit didn’t come with it’s own box and accessories of course, only in a plastic wrap.) The store employee, who handed me the replacement unit, informed me that the 2-year consumer law protection period restarts with the replacement, however, the email I received about the procedure afterwards doesn’t talk about the consumer law, it only says that either the original 1-year Apple warranty continues or a new 90-day Apple warranty applies, whichever is longer - we’ll see.

After about 8 months with the new device I noticed slight spotlighting / backlight bleed again, around about the halfway point of the portait-left side edge, the same side as previously and as everyone else. I will definitely contact Apple again. If the 2-year consumer law protection period didn’t restart, I’m out of warranty, however I think it’s obviously a manufacturing / design issue, seeing so many other examples here and elsewhere, so the right attitude would at least be free out-of-warranty replacements for all cases possibly accompanied by an official extended repair program.

Both the original and the replacement unit have been used with an original Apple smart cover. I was also wondering if the issue has to do with the strong magnetic connection of the smart cover to the iPad, which happens on the same side, portrait-left. I have removed the Apple smart cover, probably for good.

(As a sidenote, I haven’t ever used the built-in smart connector and the iPad has always been inside a hard plastic case along with the Apple smart cover, so both units were in a damage-free mint condition.)

Wifi only version 12.9 Pro 2nd generation with the Logitech Slim Folio Case sold on the Apple site. Case, pencil and Ipad purchased all at once. Thanks for the observational info

I guess me being in the US, I have less patience for this type of stuff when the costs are as exaggerated as they are.

It still have other issues. When I called Apple with these issues, they took down my serial number and put it into their system so that I cannot try my luck in Apple Store.

I'm hanging with my 12.9 2017, but the bleed is real - and the touchscreen has issues in a huge area. Kinda has since the beginning though and they wouldn't do anything, it was replaced once at the start. I'm not normally a class action kind of person, but I'd join for a replacement unit.

I'm typing this on my daughters M1 MBP while the ipad updates. The battery life on this thing is amazing, and it is fast. I won't lie, I love it. I need 512gb of storage on my iPad otherwise I would grab the new Air (in green ?) and an M1 something... going to see what the next generation of iPad Pro's bring to the table and decide then. I was set to get the 12.9 and Magic keyboard.

Oh and I've been a die hard iPad user since the beginning... I'm shocked at how much I love using this laptop. I have some physical ailments that might be contributing to that, and they aren't going anywhere and so reevaluating my needs is taking place.

Did you guys trade in your bleeding iPads?

I'm at a crossroads whether I should

1- keep mine (without touch disease) and get an 11" 2021,

2- or get rid of it, and get an 11"

3- or get rid of it, and get a 12.9"

Leaning towards option 2

its been a wonderful device and is still fast, bleeding aside, but I wonder how much life is left in it.

also at 300 charges and 80%, right before the dip of degradation but battery life has been fine too

I also have a Mini 5 I fully intend on keeping that's been humming along and enough to satisfy my old style iPad itch, complete with Touch ID gen 2, chunky bezels, and a headphone jack. It replaced my 9.7 pro in 2019.

I’m on my second Gen2 12.9 (got the first replaced), and this one is bleeding very badly by now. Consumer law in denmark says warranty starts over at a replacement, so I’m going to try my luck in getting it exchanged once again. However - this one does not suffer the touch issue like the first one. So it is more usable if you can ignore the light bleeding.

About one year.
It’s a year 8 months old now - so the renewed 2 year warranty is about to expire.

Not happy with Apple at all since this is so OBVIOUSLY a general product issue. But my iPad is also impossible to live without, so I have to admit I’m also pondering a new M1 model and use my current as trade-in.
It can’t be sold used because of the excessive light bleeding
