Just in time to be out of warranty and you to buy a new model.

Haha yeah for some. I’m riding it out. Don’t want to give Apple a boatload more for another “pro” iPad. Stubborn about the old style though I wish they released a 10.5 bezel style 12.9 instead of going straight to re design , and despite spotlighting I still love the thing on 11.3.1 Just not built to last

Bolded for truth. Shame really. I'd update every 3-3.5 years if Apple could guarantee any iPad would last that long (I am so over touch irresponsiveness showing up in every single iPad I've tried since 2017).

I wish everyone well with their replacements no matter the issue.

My iPad Air 2 from 2014 outlived my iPad Pro 12.9 from 2017 despite being half the price and older. Goes to show how the QC at Apple has dropped nowadays. Can’t buy a single thing without Apple Care Plus.

IMHO this is a manufacturing defect. It's built poor quality. I had that issue once after a screen repair. The screen press I used was too heavy and put pressure on the lcd. But if yours has not been repaired then this is just manufacturing fault. It's a scandal that it only comes with 1 year warranty considering fridge freezers come with up to 5 year warranties these days.

There is an EU law which says that defects which occur from manufacturing faults (built poor quality) need to be rectified by the manufacturer free of charge.

https://europa.eu/youreurope/citize...uarantees-returns/united-kingdom/index_en.htm

I had an issue with an iPad, just 1 year outside warranty, I took it in and they wanted to charge me for it. I was really annoyed. I cited the EU law and they just responded with the fact that the onus is on me to prove that it was a manufacturing defect.

It's possible the light spots are due to pressure put on that area, when holding by the edge with one hand. The weight of the iPad (really mostly size/leverage) would cause a lot of pressure to put put on the bezel area.

I made that same exact point on Apple official forum but I got censored...
If Apple Care Plus becomes a necessity because products break down after the 1-year warranty, then it’s not anymore a warranty, it’s blackmail. I had the same experience with my Beats-X: bought in 2017, dead 1 month after the 1-year deadline.

On the other hand, I have no issues with my 3-years Watch series 2 or with my IPhone 7.

It would take so little to restore my faith in Apple: just accept responsibility for this clearly manufacturing defect!

Yeah... I've largely moved on from Apple as a result. Massive price increases not reflected in quality. It's the new Apple under Tim Cook and it's disappointing.

Apple once had a modest "Apple tax" but you got something for that over the competition (metal chassis on the laptops, better quality trackpads, etc., etc.). Now the competition has caught up. Apple's quality has gone down, and Apple's prices have gone up.

I took extremely good care of my 2nd gen 12.9" iPad. If I wiped the fingerprints off it would have looked like a new product in the box. It had the touch issues and then the light bleed issues, but Apple doesn't want to take care of their products and it's pretty clear it's a design flaw. I spent over $1600 with the iPad, keyboard case, and pencil; and for the 13 months I was able to use it, it was a fantastic product. But if a product is going to die in 13 months I'm not spending that kind of money on it again.

Hello everyone, I had and am having the same issue(s) and thought sharing my experience so far could be interesting, though first I’m very curious about these, so please let me know:

- Have you used the magnetic Apple smart cover or other magnetic cover/case with the iPad before the problem’s development? I have been using the Apple one continuously before the issue.

- What model is your iPad more exactly? Specifically, is it wifi-only or cellular? I have no screen issues with a cellular model but had the issue twice with the wifi-only model.

Let’s send as much feedback to Apple about this as possible. Might be the only way to eventually have an extended repair / replacement program started. Quick and easy: https://www.apple.com/feedback/ipad.html

Now to the details: I had bad spotlighting / backlight bleed on a 2. generation iPad Pro 12.9” 256GB, on it’s portait-left side or edge, the same as everyone else. Several spots, strongly visible. It was purchased in July 2017 in Austria, where the consumer law protection provides 2 years of warranty. After being on the phone with Apple support, being tranferred to other employees who diagnosed the device remotely, I was told to book an appointment in an official Apple Store in Austria, then get back to the support employee with the appointment details so that he can instruct the store to have the replacement unit in stock and replace my iPad right away. Because of this I could successfully replace the iPad in an official Apple Store in Austria in March 2019, within the 2-year period, for free. (The new unit didn’t come with it’s own box and accessories of course, only in a plastic wrap.) The store employee, who handed me the replacement unit, informed me that the 2-year consumer law protection period restarts with the replacement, however, the email I received about the procedure afterwards doesn’t talk about the consumer law, it only says that either the original 1-year Apple warranty continues or a new 90-day Apple warranty applies, whichever is longer - we’ll see.

After about 8 months with the new device I noticed slight spotlighting / backlight bleed again, around about the halfway point of the portait-left side edge, the same side as previously and as everyone else. I will definitely contact Apple again. If the 2-year consumer law protection period didn’t restart, I’m out of warranty, however I think it’s obviously a manufacturing / design issue, seeing so many other examples here and elsewhere, so the right attitude would at least be free out-of-warranty replacements for all cases possibly accompanied by an official extended repair program.

Both the original and the replacement unit have been used with an original Apple smart cover. I was also wondering if the issue has to do with the strong magnetic connection of the smart cover to the iPad, which happens on the same side, portrait-left. I have removed the Apple smart cover, probably for good.

(As a sidenote, I haven’t ever used the built-in smart connector and the iPad has always been inside a hard plastic case along with the Apple smart cover, so both units were in a damage-free mint condition.)

I just wanted to add that my light spots are also on the magnet side of the screen, so perhaps you’re onto something regarding the magnets, @daniel123456789

Hi, it should be above yours. I just made edits so it needs moderation again. Thanks for the reply in any case. Have you used a magnetic case/cover and is the ipad wifi-only or cellular, if you don’t mind me asking?

oh yeah, I can see it now — strange I couldn’t see it before!

Mine is wifi-only and I use the official Apple keyboard case.

I’ve attached a photo of the light bleed pattern on mine.

For data purposes, my 12.9 gen 2 sits on the ASK close to 100% of the time and I have spotlighting too

but I don't think thats it since as mentioned plenty of people not doing this still have the same issue in same spot

I have the light bleeding on the left side as well, wiFi only version. I constantly use the Logitech smart cover and magnetic keyboard. However, the first time I got my iPad swapped, I asked the Genius if the magnetic keyboard could have been a factor, and he denied this could be the case...

Same here, on the magnet side. Hmm.

i give up - horrible device... the pencil stopped working too, doesnt do anything on the screen... pairing, repairing... always the same, stop working...

there is now almost the whole side of light bleeding...started with few on summer, now the whole side.

i will go back to windows and android - everything worked fine there. never had a problem. keep your ****, apple! eat it well!

add this: iphone battery needed to be replaced (shutting down without warning), it was cheap... 29 euros only... and the apple watch: uneven screen, apple sent me a replace unit that were even more horrible,... mbp has keyboard problem from the beginning (now there is a replacement program). im still waiting the flexgate issue...

no, i say goodbye! too many years giving us only ****. it was this day to me today. no more this ****.

until apple fix their ****, im not coming back to this ********.

Unfortunately yeah, now I have the same light bleeding as you guys. iPad Pro 2017 12.9" In addition to touch screen freezing (which is definitely Apple's hardware defect in all modern iPads) now part of my screen close to bezel has a couple of very bright non-uniform white spots. It happened after 2 years. (And screen freezing started after 9 months).

I don't know what Apple is producing these days? They are getting much worse than cheap Chinese cloned devices. At least those tablets are cheap. And Apple's are not.

Hi guys hope some one can figure out my problem. My iPad 12.9 screen has gone black but the touch still works. It’s not a software issue because I have managed to do a factory restore on iTunes but obviously can’t see anything to set it up. Do you think I need a new screen or is there a fix thanks.

Go to an Apple Store and have them diagnose the problem.

Is this a wide spread issue? Mine has the same problem. Also iPad Pro 12.9 2017. Those spotlights suddenly showed up about 3 months ago. I don't have Apple Care.

I noticed the problem on my 2017 iPP12.9 a few months ago. It doesn't seem to be widespread but it does seem common enough to get attention. Hopefully Apple addresses the issue because I love this device but the light bleed drives me crazy.

Do they replace the panel? How many days do I have to leave my device for them to fix it? How much does it cost? Wonder if I should just buy a mini or give the 12.9 to family member and wait for a 2020 iPad (pro).

Exactly the same issue as mine and you know what the warranty is over long time ago! What can we do about it except go to apple service center to replace it? And does anyone know how much to fix this issue? (i assume need to change the whole panel and the cost will be sky high?!) Sad.......

don’t you have consumer laws that you could use to try and get a FOC repair

Just wanted to thank everyone here for the advice! Apple Australia has agreed to cover a full replacement under Consumer Law (Consumer Guarantees Act) in New Zealand. Yay! ?

Our iPad 12.9 2nd Gen had backlight bleeding on the bottom of the screen; that got worse from about 14 months in with 6-8 lighter bleeds showing. The device is 25 months old so out of warranty.

It was a lengthy (2+ hours of my time) to call Apple Support and email evidence. The initial agent I spoke to could not authorise a covered as the product was out of warranty. I was passed along to a "Senior" adviser who requested photographic evidence. I also had to email my original purchase receipt; and re-visit an Authorised Service Centre to inspect the device for physical/water damage.

We have no retail "Apple Stores" in New Zealand so gaining cover is much more challenging. You'll need to be patient and kind with the team; while staying firm that you are disappointed and believe the display should not be faulty within 2 years of use.

Personally I think there should be a manufacturing extended warranty program for the iPad Pro display backlight bleeding - it's poor quality.
