Is it the weight of the bigger Pro that pushes people to the 9.7 or dimensions? Both? We're used to taking laptops around so it's funny to see how the 12.9 is almost described as some sort of oversized monster when it's 1kg with the ASK connected.

How much moving around does one actually do? I'm usually sat at a desk or on the sofa with it on my lap. It sounds like some of you are constantly roaming and can't hold it! I actually do this no problem with the bigger 12.9 Pro when I use it as a mobile whiteboard that Air plays back to my Apple TV on a big screen. I don't even bother snapping off the keyboard either.

Volume for me. The 12.9" iPad Pro takes up more room than my rMB. I still need a "real" laptop capable of running Windows so I keep the rMB around.

I want to buy the Pro as a birthday gift for my sis. What do you guys recommend the 12.9 or 9.7? She loves art and loves to draw and paint so I'll also be getting the Pencil along with it.

As many people have said, it's a personal preference. My gut is that for drawing, the bigger size is better, but you should let your sister know you won't be offended if she'd rather trade it in for the smaller size.

Never. The quality of the screen decreases

Definitely for full artist.. drawing Etc
Get the 12.9

Real estate is what a artist or drawer needs.

I personally believe for slimmed down notebook get iPhone type of tasks done on a bigger screen with ability to jot down few graphs etc get the 9.7
Especially if you work outside since the 9.7 is 40% more reflective

I guess that's why Apple has 3 different iPad sizes.

Someone could argue that the 7.9" is better than the 9.7" due to portability. Granted the 7.9" doesn't have Pencil or Smart Keyboard support... But it's just the fact that your choosing portability which makes the 7.9" iPad better suited for you.

I, for one... Know that the 12.9" iPad can be a struggle to hold and as you say not exactly portable as the smaller iPads. But I find that the on-screen keyboard better on the 12.9" compared to the 7.9" due to the full layout of it.

But it's pretty good idea of Apple gives us these ranges to choose from.. "What a time to be alive!"

Thank you. This is a much better answer than..

"I bought the x.xx" model, and since that it the size that works for me it must be the size that works for everyone. The other sizes are too small/big and are obnoxious/unusable, and everyone who buys a size different than mine is just plain wrong."

Thank you for answering this sanely.

Obviously, your entitled to your opinion.

But I have a Smart Cover & sometimes I wanna hold it with my hands. Having it practically stationary isn't why I bought the 12.9"... I bought it for the screen real estate & what it allows me to do with it.

I prefer the flexibility of it. It can be used while in hands... Granted for not long periods. But I'm perfectly fine with holding it.

Perfect size no matter what and fits into slots in backpacks easily. The larger one rivals screen size of some laptops, and they are nowhere even close to as useful as an actual computer. The 9.7 is great for drawing, flying with forefight or Garmin pilot, and is the best option out there for sure.

So it's the best option if you want it to fit in a backpack pocket. :D

Other people have other considerations that affect what is best for them. There is no single "best option" for everyone.

No way! There are other people who like other things? Crazy.

Yes I know people have other considerations, people are too sensitive these days thinking one must put a disclaimer every single time an opinion is given. I'm not one of those.

For every person who is too sensitive there is someone who is arrogant. Neither are helpful and it is easy to fall into of those extremes if not careful.

There are definitely a lot of arrogant people, but I'm not sure it is a one for one deal like you're suggesting. I don't believe my recommendation, for what I thought was best, was arrogant though. Maybe I'm wrong.

Oh, I didn't think it was arrogant! But I also don't understand why people need to say something is "the best" without qualifying it with a "for me." IMO, it brings more clarity to the discussion.

Yes, it pretty much is one for one. I apologize if you thought my comments were directed at you. They weren't. I was speaking in the general sense.

I hate threads like these.

If you want to know the difference, go compare the specs. Pick up a 9.7" Pro in a store, and use it. Don't ask people what you should buy.

"Should I eat at Olive Garden or Ruby Tuesday tomorrow?" Please make up my kind for me.

It's called "community" and having a "conversation". Soliciting opinions from others may result in learning some things that a person didn't know before. Some people have learned things based on my description of the things that I do and I've learned from others as well.

And if you care so little about the subject, why spend the time to post?

I have the 12.9" and wondering if I really need the 9.7" and what are the main difference if any.

The big difference is the screen size (says Captain Obvious): the screen size on the 12.9 makes it better as a laptop replacement or a graphics tablet but less convenient as a mobile/handheld device. Its not a case of either/or - you need to decide which uses are most important to you.

Having just got a 9.7 plus the Pencil and had a quick play with Paper, AstroPad etc. I'd say that if that had been my primary usage then I'd have regretted not getting the 12.9. For mixed use (& considering the price) the 9.7 is a reasonable compromise.

The 9.7 leapfrogs the 12.9 on a few features like the camera and the TruTone screen, but no doubt those features will turn up on the 12.9 at some stage in the next 12 months - if you already have the 12.9" and are happy with it there's no point "upgrading" just yet.

I ended up with a 12.9 after having both.

Multitasking is a bummer on the 9.7. Even pip isn't ideal due to the size.

However. I think for singular tasks on the go the 9.7 is king.

I always feel a little silly using the 12.9 as a ebook reader or browsing on the go.

This I why I ended up with both. I guess it's not for everyone financially but both of them have positives and negatives depending on your needs.

I had to go to the apple store today to get my iPhone replaced and purchased one, so i now have my small one for at home and my large one for work.
