I saw that but not sure how accurate it is until all models are out in the wild?
Ah well, looks like Apple won't be getting a penny off me this year!
We don't know which model it was until the internal identifiers have been decoded. So far, ipad8,8 & ipad8,2 have 6GB. ipad8,3 has 4GB.
Bummer. These two in combination do suggest the 1TB model is significantly different from the others, and so it’s looking likely only the 1TB will have the 6GB memory.
Why does ram bother people? When an inevitable new feature years from now will no longer support the 2018 iPad Pro, it will be just that - not supported by the 2018 iPad Pro.. there will be non exceptions for people with 1GB devices etc
What is sad about this is that Apple could tell us upfront how much memory for each model, so we would not have to cancel or returned orders.
That’s why it’s so annoying. They know it’s problematic because people question it EVERY YEAR, but they don’t change their behavior.Just like they usually do yeah?
*We* do. The vast majority of their customers likely don't.That’s why it’s so annoying. They know it’s problematic because people question it EVERY YEAR, but they don’t change their behavior.
Seems to be that the 1TB SSD requires more caching and the 2GB extra RAM is needed so the 1TB version has the same amount of usuable non-caching RAM as the 512GB and lower versions.
In other words, it only has more ram so it doesn't perform WORSE than the lower storage versions.
You’re sure it’s going to take the whole extra 2 gigs of RAM to cache the extra 512GB?Exactly this ... performance will be the same, as. a matter of fact it’s likely the SSD is 2 x 512 and needs the extra ram ... we will find out next week when ifixit tears one apart but I’m sure that you wont see a performance advantage in the 6gb version vs 4gb version.
Nah, it's not. I believe industry standard is 1MB RAM : 1GB NAND Flash. You’re sure it’s going to take the whole extra 2 gigs of RAM to cache the extra 512GB?
Nah, it's not. I believe industry standard is 1MB RAM : 1GB NAND Flash.
The RAM in excess of what's needed for cache should help in multitasking or RAM hungry apps. Processing performance though, there should be no diff.
Not like they can buy 4.5GB or 5GB of LPDDR4.If the 512Gb version ships with 4Gb RAM then that would mean 0.5Gb for SSD cache and 3.5Gb remaining for the system. The 1Tb version ships with 6Gb RAM then that would mean 1Gb for SSD cache and 5Gb remaining for the system. Quite a big disparity between the two and certainly an appreciable increase in available RAM for the bigger model.
TL|DR
I am not saying "don't buy the 2018 iPad Pros". What I am saying is... RAM IS a concern. And next year's models will almost definitely offer more RAM with most everything else staying the same.
I waited 2-3 years for the MBP to hit 32GB RAM... and while the wait was painful it was WELL worth it! Just bear that in mind!
By this rate, this I
I too will likely wait for either a Swappa buy, or next years version. My typical rule is never buy a first gen apple product, since the second is a better iteration.
I'm not really buying Apple's 'We are increasing prices because we expect you to keep your device longer" angle. I have no doubt that their flagships will all be updated in 2019, and all the 7nm chips we have now will be 20-30% faster than this years.

Never, ever will I buy a device with insufficient RAM again.
Uh, Math?Again this sucks cause there’s no reason NOT to throw in more RAM, but it honestly is not needed to do full CAD files, Raw photos, photoshop, affinity photo, Procreate, or anything else, plus it’s not a 50% increase in RAM it’s about 20-25%. *I don’t know where some were getting that 6GB is 50% more than 4GB.
Geekbench 4 shows same scores (within a margin of error) for both 4GB and 6GB RAM models.*side note, those benchmarks saying the 6GB models have higher scores because of the more RAM... is nonsense. RAM has no true affect on a CPU’s score, as these Geekbench are only measuring the speed on which the CPU and GPU open or perform under heaven loads... RAM has nothing to do with that really. Plus the score can be higher or lower every time you run the test, my iPhone XS Max got a much higher score than others recorded, but then I ran it again right after, and it scored quite a bit less.

Both iPad 3 and 4 had 1GB RAM. The problem with the iPad 3 is insufficient GPU.Hahah sadly i do remember that lol. Same with ipad 3 vs 4
I too am extremely particular and obsessive about having the very top end Apple products, but I fear my obsession may get the most of me and I’ll cave for the 1TB. iOS 13 is set to become even more intricate and while 4GB would probably be enough for a few years, I’d rather have the absolute best performance for a device that’s already going to cost well over a grand.***Long post but bare with me here....
I was quite upset before, especially as iPads are the one thing I obsess really bad about. I have bad OCD in general, but when it comes to expensive electronics it gets worse.
Anyway, I was trying to think (maybe I’ll upgrade to the 1TB as I need the 6GB.) But logically it is not worth it to me to spend $2000 on 6GB.
And the 6GB v 4GB shouldn’t bother me when using the device. What bothered me was simply “having the best of the best” but like someone posted before 6GB RAM for the 1TB is truly there to make it not bottleneck and perform as good as the other models.
I plan to upgrade to the next update anyways (the iPad X Pro in 2020.) There won’t be another update for the pros until then as the refresh cycle is 1 1/2 years or such, and Apple will most likely only introduce 2 new iPads next Spring, a new 2019 9.7” and a 7.9” Mini, which will be the holidays more popular iPad anyway.
Does it suck still? Indeed, but I never really had memory issues with any of the last iPad Pros’ 4GB of RAM.
Just think about it a moment... does spending $2000 on an iPad for just 6GB (2gb more) really seem worth it?
My iMac, MacBook Air run great with 4GB, and those are full desktop OS’s, so I’m not really worried about the iPad as I was 12 hours ago.
Again this sucks cause there’s no reason NOT to throw in more RAM, but it honestly is not needed to do full CAD files, Raw photos, photoshop, affinity photo, Procreate, or anything else, plus it’s not a 50% increase in RAM it’s about 20-25%. *I don’t know where some were getting that 6GB is 50% more than 4GB.
I say if you ordered the iPad in 64, 256, or 512... wait to get and use it and then decide if you really NEED that RAM or simply “want it, cause it’s just... more.”
I’m surprised I am not snagging the 1TB, as with my (truly diagnosed OCD) I usually HAVE to have the best and fastest Apple device, but I oddly feel more calm and chill with the 256gb I ordered, (I’m only slightly annoyed now) but mostly cause Apple skimped on us, and pulled this crap again *especially after the backlash with 2016 iPad Pro only having 2GB v the 4GB the 12.9” had.
Time will still tell if I change my mind and upgrade to 1TB, but I’m hoping I’ll just be content with the beast the iPad already is.

Kallum.
