"you do understand that in the same physical dimensions, magnesium is a lot weaker (~20%) than even 6061 aluminum, right? "

Is that correct? I don't know. Then use carbon fiber! But better yet make the damn thing a little thicker, and put back the earphone jack that almost everyone wants while you're at it - everyone except the mnaufacturers who want to sell their wireless earphones. These things are made to be carried around in all sorts of situations and should be durable. I am in a situation where mine cannot always be carefully babied.

Do you see any complaints online about Samsung tablets bending or breaking easily? Do a search for "new ipad pros bending", something like that, and you will see them piling up. I had the 12.9 Ipad Pro last, and when the volume button broke at almost 3 months I returned it to Costco as fortuitously they offer a 3 month return. Then I switched to Samsung. Sure I like the Apple system but I need something durable.

Carbon fiber is expensive, difficult to work with, and recycling of it is problematic. Looks like Apple may have considered it at one time -

So did your 12.9 bent?

FTR, carbon fiber would be a terrible material choice for several reasons (heat conductivity, RF transparency, it's brittle [vs. sudden, concentrated impact], and using it for small, complex designs seems like a fabrication issue).

How brittle can carbon fiber be, they make tennis rackets out of it? They make airplanes out of it. They make a lot of laptops out of it too. But the easiest and best thing is just to do what I said next, make it a little thicker. What are they, stupid?

Semi-interesting (or maybe not, hahaha ...) anecdote, re: carbon fiber,, a friend of mine does some of his own CF fab work, mostly to build small sailing components, interesting guy, from NZ, a materials engineer, and specializes in consulting with teams for large racing yachts. I met him when I had my Supra that had some really spectacular CF parts, and we struck up a conversation over my car.

Neat gig. He had some crazy tales about being transported via private helicopters into the middle of a desert with these 40K sq/ft buildings setup with all sorts of fluid dynamic / materials testing equipment, it was all very secretive (he did a bunch of work with a number of well known crews in the LV series).

No it did not, but I didn't use it in the field, only at home. I made a mistake buying it. It was too big. I loved the screen though. I liked it better than the OLED on my Samsungs. I felt it was easier on my eyes. I'd like to get another Apple in a smaller size, but it needs to be rugged.

So you want it to be rugged without using a case at all?

Might be because barely anyone owns a Samsung tablet as opposed to millions of iPad owners.

When you look at the video, this guy puts an insane amount of pressure on it
definitly not a normal usage! Also if you are so worried about bending, just add a rigid case and you are good to go ;)

I have cases for all my tablets, but none of them are that strong really, as far as bending protection goes. I am holding my old 12 inch Ipad case right now. It bends easily. There's an idea - if there was a case that was nice and rigid but still light and compact - aluminum or carbon fiber or magnesium - do they make anything like that? but really i just want the tablet to be thicker...and with a headphone jack! Why the thiness obsession - especially since people add a case anyway? Does anyone here want super-thin tablets? How does it even make a difference, especially with a case on it? It just makes the tablet more fragile.

A thicker tablet with a case is thicker than a thinner tablet with a case. I like the thin tablets, myself, and have never had a bending problem with regular use. It certainly would never induce me to go back to Android (though I still have 6 Android tablets stored away, none of which I can get OS updates on without rooting and installing a custom ROM).

Why do you like thin tablets? What difference would it make if it was a couple of millimeters thicker?

I think Apple made the iPad thin to maintain the right weight also so we have flexibility over cases and accessories to add on. For me i dont need a tough case so i chose the folio case and smart keyboard. I use the latest 11” pro like i use any of my other iPads before. 30% of the time without a case even. I dont particularly babied my iPad but i dont purposely rough it too. 13 Months on and still flat as day 1. Pics on the other thread if you need proof.

I think most people here are just too paranoid. Question is how are you SO sure it will get bend when everyone usage / use-case is so different. What are you plan to do with it that makes you so sure the iPad will bend? @xx22 You dont even take out your iPad ever and yet you so sure it will bend.. What gives???

Im pretty sure no sane people are going to put that much pressure like on those stupid bending video. Many many of us are enjoying a perfectly flat iPad Pro.. I knew 3 friends of mine who have a perfectly flat 2018 iPad Pro they dont even know there was such bending thing in the first place. They laugh at me when i asked them to get a stainless steel ruler and check. I wish i recorded the facetime session..

If you are going to wait for an iPad that passes bend test with that much pressure like on those videos, you be waiting for a longg timee if not forever.

I am happy with the current iPad Pro rigidity and so does many many other who dont find this an issue at all..
Thicker iPad for longer battery life yes please / maybe. Thicker heavier iPad for structure only? No thanks im perfectly fine with the current one.

The buzz makes unnecessary paranoia yet we see little numbers of people with an actual bend problem.

Not here to lure you back or anyone to get one, i couldn’t care less.

iPad Pro 2020 Bend test...

Sucks they did not improve the structural integrity of this new iPad. Will wait for possible revision end of year :(

Most likely, if there is a revision, nothing will change in regards to structural integrity. If Apple was planning to address this, they would’ve done it on the 2020 model, like they did with iPhone 6S. They don’t consider this an issue, and many people (including me) don’t have problems.

TLDR: Expect the same structural integrity of the iPad Pro for the next several years.

Difference in weight and overall feel. I love the current iPad Pro design, it feels really good in hand. No issues.

I had no idea there were still people that thought this was an issue? I‘m typing this on my launch day 2018 12.9 that’s only been in the Apple Folio or ASK. Crammed in a backpack for 350,000 plus flight miles and over 100,000 road miles. Used As my main device, doing relief work in some very hard hit areas of Asia. No bends...

However with enough force one can bend anything... cars bend. Everything bends if you mistreat it. YouTubers make money bending things just to freak people out. Buy what you want and enjoy it. Apple care is a thing... Makes it worry free.

There's a 2,000 post long sticky thread about it up on the top with 247,000 views!

Such silly reply. You think that thread is all filled with bend cases?

Go count how many ppl WITH actual bending issue. You be surprise. Most of the replies are from people like you who are too paranoid and people like me who have no issue.

The majority of the posts are not reporting about bends... its those who DO NOT OWN ONE that complain about it ... I read the whole thread so I know. It's a small handful of people who actually own one and had a bend. 98% of the thread is just people complaining without owning one.
