I don’t think we’ll see a M1 pro or max or ultra in an iPad In the near future. They use more power and generate more heat. The M1 is kind of an A14Z. Rumors seem to indicate we won’t see mini LED in the next 11 inch pro. The 12.9 is in its first year with mini LED. Other than a chance the 11 inch gets mini LED I would guess the next gen will be a spec bump.
I wonder what the spec bump would be, though. RAM is fine now. M1 is solid, and if it doesn’t get M2 or M1 Pro/Max/Ultra what else is there to bump? The rear camera? A new Apple Pencil? Just reverse wireless charging. Very curious what they have planned.

Of course I’m just speculating, but look at the 2018 vs 2020 iPad Pros. Pretty small real world differences. That’s what I’d expect. M2, higher end Bluetooth, perhaps some new lossless audio tech, enhanced cameras, … I think most of us thought the 11 inch would get mini LED, but recent rumors suggest otherwise.

I understand you're just speculating. We all are, even the ones saying there won't be a 2022 iPad Pro. It wasn't until just days ahead of the iPad Air 5 announcement that rumors started to swirl that it would receive the M1. I suspect that as we get closer to the Fall, we'll see more rumors about what these Pros will bring to the table this time around.

I suppose some form of spec bump is a given, since even the 2020 models increased the base storage, made 6GB RAM standard across the board, activated two extra cores on the chip and improved the rear camera with Lidar (I think it was also the first iPad with WiFi 6). Lots of tiny bumps. Nothing exactly mind-blowing, but welcome additions for anyone in the market for the top-of-the-line iPad.

I'll be following the rumors closely, as always.

For me it’s all in an updated display for the 11”. I have the 2018 Pro now, and it’s my main consumption device so I want the best possible screen for that. My iPad is perfect for my use case in all other regards still.

Whatever they need to do in order to get battery life similar to the 13 Pro Max models. Seriously, how does EVERY iPad model for years now get the same battery life quoted by Apple? Go look at the Apple website right now and you'll see.

Makes zero sense.

They don't in actual use. However, it's not a good look for Apple to have the $329 iPad post better battery life than the $1099 iPad Pro 12.9.

Yeah I have been wanting a new iPad for ages, decided to pull the trigger on an 11“ pro and magic keyboard as there hasn’t been much talk and rumours about any new Pros, keyboard was kinda cramped compared to my 2020 air but I’ve gotten used to it over a few days and love it now
As an artist, I would love a bigger Pro… then Samsung went and did it, so my 2018 12.9”’ iPad Pro has been upgraded to a 14.9” Galaxy Tab Ultra.

Totally agree.

With iPhones, the smaller the phone/battery, the worse the battery life is. Hear complaints about the smaller phones batteries all the time. With the big Pro Max beasts, the battery is incredible. Has gotten better and better over the years, especially lately with the M1/OLED etc. Hear how great the battery life is, I know for myself. Then for comparison's sake, the original iPhone was rated for 8 hours of talk time with the screen off. We all know how quick those things could discharge with the screen on, watching video, or using GPS. Now a Pro Max is quoted as 25-28 hours of video and 95 hours of audio playback. Holy crap, what a jump that is.

Yet a brand new 12.9 with a massive battery, OLED screen and M1 processor and all the new efficient things doesnt get any quoted battery life than literally the original iPad that came out in 2010? Dont keep reading and glaze over that. A current massive iPad with all the advantages possible doesnt get any battery life than the OG thats 12 years old. How is that even possible? On top of it, I've read a decent amount of complaints about the battery life on a 12.9. Doesnt last any longer than a smaller/older one, someone mentioned cellular drags it down, issues with a magic keyboard dragging it down (fixed bug by now though I'd think or hope?), and just reviews in general saying battery life isnt as good as you'd think it would or should be.

I just dont understand. At all.

The iPad has one major disadvantage: the large, high resolution display. I do believe the Mini-LED screen actually uses more power than the previous LCD models at the display brightness most people use. I get pretty excellent battery life on mine with my normal settings and usage. Display is usually 0-25% brightness, closer to 0% most of the time (night time reading/browsing).

As for MacBooks, they tend to have even bigger batteries than iPads hence their better battery life.

After months of waiting I received my iPad Pro 11’ 512GB last week, so I really hope there will not be a new version soon or I’ll be bummed out massively :)

I love most of it - with the Magic Keyboard it’s a great combo. Sure, miniled woud be nice. Maybe battery life could be better. But most of all I want a better OS. iPad OS is simply not using the power of the M1 inside. It’s too limited, has too many constraints.

I’d say the iPad Pro doesn’t need hardware upgrades whatsoever. What it needs is an iPad OS-revolution. Hoping for WWDC… (but it always dissapoints…)

Quite satisfied with my 2020 iPadPro 12.9” so not really looking to upgrade for several more years. Now if the 2022 equivalent was all of a sudden $400, well I’d have to look but still likely would not buy.

iPadOS is not where it needs to be at this juncture. Using the "Pro" moniker on a device that most Pro's cannot use professionally just seems, gimmicky. I'd like to buy an iPad Pro one day. They look stunning, and they appear to be excellent for media consumption. They just need to make iPadOS more powerful if they want more people jump ship.
Its not the iPadOS that needs to be more powerfull thou - this is a common misconception. Its the software that comes with it (appstore). Software needs to get more advanced, and start treating iPad as a Pro device indeed.

Btw, I just listed a bunch of reasons as to why iPad is a great device - on the other thread. But I didnt tell you I dont use mine for my Professional work. So - indeed.

Btw, I dont use it for professional work - for the simple reason that the software I use doesn’t exist for iPad, plus ipads screen size is too smal + configuration is no way powerfull enogugh (i use a MacPro with multiple monitors).

The only thing that would definitely get me to upgrade my 12.9 is if Touch ID made a return. I strongly prefer it.

Things I’d really like but may or may not be enough to get me to upgrade are:
- more storage (I can never have enough)
- a return of thicker bezels (easier to handle)
- return of 3.5mm port (for no lag audio work and when my BT headphones battery dies)
- I’m sure I’m pretty much alone on this, but I’d like a convertible form factor (I always use my 12.9 with a keyboard or resting on something anyway, and this would save overall weight in my bag [edit-]/make it not top heavy when using the keyboard, and save the hassle of attaching/detaching a keyboard)

I’d also consider a larger iPad size.

I also want an Apple Pencil with a sharper tip.

2023 iPad Pro

#1. 120hz OLED LTPO Display (Samsung Tab S8+ already has)
#2. 8GB LPDDR5 RAM (Samsung Tab S8+ already has)
#3. Taptic vibration (Samsung Tab S8+ already has)

I could go on, basically I got a Tab S8+ so I could have a 2023 iPad Pro today just before Tim Cook tell his engineers to use Samsung parts. I mean it’s just 1.4” inches bigger than my 11” Pro but it feels like a movie theater with the great OLED colors. I always found to 12.9 Pro too heavy. And after a software Update the colors just pop. I got the Tab S8+ for $450 thanks to Samsung’s Pre-order deals for my S22 Ultra.

My 2018 11” Pro is feeling sluggish. If Samsung can fit in Taptic vibration into a thinner tablet than an 11” Pro then Apple can too.
