For me, as a photographer, they are irrelevant. I am a content creator.

I wouldn’t buy an oled monitor no matter how expensive it was.

As I said before, the same war is happening in that field as here. So you’ll find arguments on both sides there too.

You keep mentioning viewfinders. It’s totally irrelevant what tech the view finder has in relation to the final content. Oled make no difference here.
Just gotta say, you don’t speak for all content creators. Some need OLED to get a solid grip on the full HDR, particularly for video. Saying it’s a debate is not the same as saying it’s irrelevant.

You don’t need oled to create content for anything. It is irrelevant.
People like it and use it, I suppose- although I don’t know any personally in the photography and videography scene.
It’s best as a content consumption technology.

I also have an iPhone 11 pro, and the visual effect is similar for me when I look at a white object on a black background in a dark environment with brightness turned up (it’s also easy to produce photos of my phone that look similar to the ipad “blooming” photos we’ve seen, as I’ve done here, though that doesn’t prove much with iPad or iPhone cameras). Ultimately probably just a difference in the way we perceive things visually. Or you can just stick with calling strangers on the internet hacks and liars because they disagree with you ?
You know, when I go out and look at the moon, the bloom is less if I squint a bit. Maybe you're onto something with variances in people's eyesight ;) I guess I should take my 2021 IPP out of the box and try squinting at some white text on black in the dark :p

I see blooming if I look at headlights at night (ie on-coming traffic) LOL. I don't use dark mode, so as long as it's not on light mode....

Personally I think people are too picky, sure there are visible dimming zones, but they're not really a big deal unless you decide to make them a big deal.

Nothing is perfect, not even the iPad Pro.

As for MaxTech... pfft, I think their staff seems really nice, they're accessible and produce a quality product, but their bias is ridiculous. The screen in his iPad could be on literal fire and he would be saying "Wow! How is this even possible! Look at the contrast!"
And you still think they’re biased?:

OLEDs don't bloom though. So it's not comparable. What you're seeing is either the white being so bright in OLEDs or at least contrasted against a pure black that it appears to bloom but that's not the same effect. Local Dimming LED LCDs are the proper comparison.
I guess you didn’t get me. I said “blooming” because that’s what’s been going around. It is actually the effect of the glass on top and the natural reaction of the naked eye.

And yes, in general, we can still say that it “blooms” because it’s a similar experience.

I don't know if this true or not, as I'm not that familiar with Max Tech, but this video seems perfectly honest to me. They go pretty in depth into the how and why's, their reasoning is sound, and most importantly it's honest about real life scenario's rather than clickbait. It's not denying blooming exists, but it's giving an honest account of when and how you might see and notice blooming.
It’s also worth pointing out that, compared to gray blacks ALL THE TIME, compared to a tiny amount of blooming but great contrast all the time, it’s a huge upgrade.

I don’y know anyone who claimed it was perfect or that it needed to be to be better than what we had.

Then they’ll say he’s a ‘fan boy’ and a ‘sheeple’ and say it’s rigged because on ‘their’ iPad Pro m1, that they’ve never owned, is worse than anything in existence. Then they’ll show you one of the widely debunked ‘photos’ as proof. Boom. That proves it all. Oh, and also the billion core amd threadripper (eta 2046) pisses all over an m1 anyway.
Just show them this picture in return…

iPad Pro 2020 on the left and iPad Pro 2021 on the right.

That's not true blooming. If you cover up the white text you will see that the adjacent pixels are pure black. The 'blooming' on OLED is an illusion because your eyes can't reconcile the fine line between white and black pixels. If you have an OLED iPhone you can test this buy simply covering up the white Apple logo with your finger on the black start up screen and you can see that the glow that appears to be surrounding it isn't really there.
If the end result is you have to cover the white pixels to prevent it, and your eyes will inevitably see it, then why is it worth arguing about (or caring about)?

Who was arguing? I certainly wasn’t, unless that’s what you consider stating facts to be.

And you still think they’re biased?:

lol... yes, watch that video and tell me they're not biased, the first paragraph out of his mouth is:

"Apples new 24" iMac is definitely a hit, with it's brand new design, the incredible M1 chip, the beautiful 4.5K display and the surprisingly light and thin chassis."

The rest is click bait.

It's irrelevant, I like Max Tech, I watch their videos, I "thumps up" their videos, I subscribe to the channel... being biased isn't a defect, it's an attribute.

Try using the reddit app in dark mode, read anything in dark mode (like the kindle app), or use a trackpad to see the giant bloom that shows up on a black background with the cursor you hack fraud.

it’s extremely distracting if you try to use it to do something pro like writing or reading. Not to mention all the UI elements like the home button bar glowing like a radiation stick.
LMFAO. Get them!

Back on topic…. She’s ready for her closeup! 😳😍

But it still a different thing. The miniLED zones themselves cause blooming effect, on top of the glass causing even more.

Whereas with OLED, the glass doesn't really create a blooming effect unless there's a big gap between the panel and the glass (or as others said, the object surrounded by black is too bright).

It's mostly big TVs that can have more space between the panel and the glass, phones and tablets need to be much more compact so they're as tight as possible.

The way this thread backfired is kind of beautiful, actually. Sort of like the XDR display…only kind of beautiful.

Keep up the good censorship, I mean work, Max Tech.

Just watched some 4K HDR 60fps videos on YouTube on the 2021 iPad Pro 12.9. It’s unbelievably good. One must see it in person to actually feel it. Don’t play with those meaningless blooming hunting. Just go to YouTube and search for ‘4K 60 HDR’ and prepare to have your jaw dropped.

For example:

Comparing it with my 2017 LG LED TV which also claim to support HDR… (well…I think it’s not true HDR)
Hmmm I must say that the difference is very very significant.
Not only is HDR better, Blacks is better, contrast is better, White colours 1000% more accurate than oled, viewing this forum in dark mode on both 12 pro max and mini led iPad, the white text looks amazing on my mini led iPad, crisp white, 100% pure white, way brighter at same brightness, and way more crisp, compared to my 12 pro max oled display, looks nowhere near as white, looked a tad yellow and more of a murky white next to my iPad mini led display.

Love my 12 pro max oled display, but this mini led display sure has some advantages over it.

Reading this forum in dark mode just fine on this gorgeous mini led display, these reddit and twitter clickbaiters crack me up, they're intentionally maxing out the brightness and taking way over exposed photos and videos for their 2 seconds of fame and it's working a treat for them judging off all the people on here who don't own one and have never seen one in person.

This will all blow over soon and then they'll be looking for their next click bait material so they can stay relevant.

While I believe the blooming is overblown (I'm not one to pixel-peep), you can't just dismiss it all as clickbait on Reddit. They wouldn't be taking pictures and this wouldn't be a thing, if there wasn't something to it. A lot of online stuff claims that not all of them are maxing brightness. One dude produced photos from a pro Sony, not a cellphone, with 25 percent brightness and it had blooming.

In the end, it probably exists, but how bad it is depends on what an individual will tolerate or is sensitve to.
