I think about to try the iOS15 beta. Is the blooming much better on this firmware? The blooming in a total dark room is the only thing which bothers me. Apart from that the picture quality is absolutely magnificent.

Edit: Nevermind, official iOS15 is coming soon anyway.
Annnd, there’s not a real difference with 15 that I can see.

Are there cases where the blooming is worse than it’s supposed to be?
I just got my new iPad Pro 12.9 inch yesterday and it’s way worse than i expected. The video app is HBO Max.
I’m wondering if other people have it this bad, or if there’s a chance i could exchange the iPad for a new device where the blooming isn’t as noticeable…

It’s just that bad. The first one I got, looked like that too and same thing as you I thought I had a defective unit, exchange it and then the second one was the same.

People in this forum is going to tell you that is a fair trade off for better color and contrast but for me is just not acceptable.

This is how it looks for me in the Apple TV app in a room with daylight. It’s very cloudy though.
I have to push the brightness after taking the photo to see the blooming and don’t notice any looking at it. The brighter parts come from the reflections on the matte glass

I am starting to believe that the latest batch of IPad Pro‘s 12.9 is the one with real blooming issues. That would explain why there are opinions so polarized in this post and why when the Mini LED IPads arrived in May, reviewers did not talk about this issue more deeply.

Don’t get me wrong. When I watched For All Mankind in my pitch black bedroom I noticed it too, of course. It’s there. And it can be distracting. But the content has to use pure blacks, extreme contrasts (the An Apple Original text above) and i have to sit in a dark room.

I don’t have any problems with the screen otherwise.

No, it’s the internet. :) Pick literally ANY topic and you’ll find strongly polarized opinions. Antagonism gets views, so antagonism is what you’ll see. Doesn’t even matter if there’s any veracity to claims on either side.

The boring and very not-click-baity reality is quite likely that people are different and perceive the world differently. Some are more sensitive to light than others such that things that are fine for a large number of people are not ok for them. It is absolutely a problem for them and I don’t think anything can change that.

Re: the blooming, when I first got it, mine was similar. Now I am on the iPadOS 15 betas and, while still present, it is significantly reduced. There is no longer the giant square around the cursor - it is MUCH closer to the size of the cursor and if you are not looking for it.

Nope. Just updated it. It is EXACTLY the same.

Not sure why you would go back the screen is amazing 99% of the time. You almost have to induce the blooming for it to be a problem.

In a completely dark room it is a big problem and very distracting in many dark scenes. The size of the blooming area doesn't make any sense at all. Otherwise i LOVE the display, but the blooming...very unfortunate.

Makes me wonder if a bias lighting approach would help when in a completely dark room.

The one time I really noticed it was watching "For all Mankind" in my bed in complete darkness. But in the end, calling this a big problem is totally weird to me as big implies it's affecting my overall enjoyment of the screen, and it absolutely does not. I also pretty much never watch anything in total darkness, I prefer some ambient light. And with some ambient light on it's really hard to notice the blooming at all.

Matches my experience with the 2021 12.9 - even the same show.

It helps immensely. Only time i watch in a completely dark room is in bed though. Got a laptop holder wallmounted and i think i will now just install a bias lighting. Also better for the eyes.

Don't get me wrong, i adore this display. I just can't understand why the blooming area is so giant and that my Samsung 65Q90T with only 96 dimming zones handles a scene like the beginning of Oxygen so much better.

I use bias lighting with my 55" Samsung 4K TV and find it helps. And same on the iPad display - I really like it but they could have done better.

I agree on the zone sizes. No idea what kind of limitation causes this, maybe they needed something to improve on for future iPad Pro models ;)

I never watch anything in complete darkness so it’s not an issue for me. I did try it for fun in a dark room and I didn’t think it was that bad. I guess everyone needs to make their own decision. For me the trade off wasn’t even close. Just looking at my pictures on this display compared to the 2020 iPad is worth the price of admission. Screen is amazing IMO

I think its not such a big issue, can be sometimes distracting but otherwise the screen is great. I thinks there is a little bit issue with software optimisation because in some situations bloom around test is much bigger than mini led zone is. HDR movies looks great.

Apple just needs to suck it up and pay Sony for their local dimming algorithm, their attempt is looking pretty amateur.

Does Sony have a local dimming algorithm that works at 120 Hz? Looking for a new television (not particularly hard, so I’m assuming it’s VERY possible I’ve missed that tech).

This will help but I know this doesn't actually fix the issue. And I'm gonna sound like a bit of a twank, but... you really shouldn't be watching anything in total darkness. It's extremely bad for your eyes. Not sure on your eye condition, but if they are good, I'd recommend halting that habit immediately. Because once your eye sight starts to go, you'll really wish you'd taken better care.

This is so true! Since I live together with my girlfriend I usually look about 2 hrs in my iPad every night before sleep. When my lady wants to sleep the bedroom has to be dark! She can’t sleep with the light on my nightstand turned on. So I Look in total darkness into that screen. My eye sight went so bad in the last 3 years it’s just sad how stupid I was.. now I stay in the living room until I’m tired enough to go sleep..

Yeah, I use bias lighting with my 4K TV when watching in a dark room.
