I have the new 12.9 iPad Pro. Love the screen, a great improvement on my 1st Gen 12.9 Pro. Would have not realised this was a thing if I had not read the forum. Issue is way overblown in my opinion.
100% exactly this. You really have to be looking for it to see it, or if you do see it a bit it’s just a shrug of the shoulders and turn the brightness down a bit, like you would on any other screen ever made (I know I know oled).

I just got my 12.9 iPad Pro today and have been using it for several hours now. Is there a screen shadow? Yes, but it’s very slight, and truthfully, had I not read about it I wouldn’t have noticed it at all. As it is, it really doesn’t bother me in the least, and I can be pretty picky about things. As for blooming, I haven’t had this in a dark room yet, but from what I’ve seen, I can’t imagine it will be a problem. I absolutely love the black blacks on this screen. So much darker than my 6th-generation iPad. Speaking for myself, I am not in the least tempted to return this machine for either of those issues. Also, the Magic Keyboard is a great piece of equipment. Typing is fantastic, and the touchpad is extremely handy.

Nothing to worry about, had mine since launch day, no chance it’s going back.
Second this. The screen is amazing even with the bloom. sometime it is noticeable but I still won't go back. OLED would have been nice but the price added to have it probably wouldn't be. Though with burnin potential, miniLED is a very nice compromise. maybe next gen or one after they can increase the number of dimming zones and reduce the size so blooming will be much less..

Starting to see why apple went with mini led on a big screen device instead of oled, no risk of burn in, no complaints about yellow screen or green tint, accurate colors, no pink, red, green and blue hues on the display when slightly moving the display.

This is coming from a oled tv convert, that has had burn in once and got it replaced under warranty, still love my oled tv, mini led display on a iPad is turning out to be a genius move by apple.

Burn in and inaccurate colours are the exact reason why Apple didn’t choose oled. This is the iPad Pro. It’s a drawing surface, and image editing tablet, it’s for editing and creation not consumption. It’s can do that, and it does it well - but that’s not its goal. oled may have the best blacks, but the compromises to allow it are to great for anyone who relies on accuracy and/or a clean screen. To be honest it’s a no brainer for any image creation professional. The oled diehards are strong here, but don’t even realise how irrelevant they are to creating the very things they (and we) love watching on their 100” oled tellys.

Guys, Max Tech was spot on. I have an OLED TV and it does slightly bloom too. It's because there's a glass on top of the panel, for one thing. In the case of the Mini-LED's on the iPad, which produces way higher brightness than OLED, the blooming can be a little more but not as exagerated as in the photos being circulated.

Also, our naked eyes can produce blooming when looking at a bright object up close.

Max Tech is right in suggesting to lower the brightness on the Mini-LED iPads. These new screens are really bright and therefore should be tamed accordingly. And they are indeed beautiful to watch HDR/Dolby Vision with.
OLEDs don't bloom though. So it's not comparable. What you're seeing is either the white being so bright in OLEDs or at least contrasted against a pure black that it appears to bloom but that's not the same effect. Local Dimming LED LCDs are the proper comparison.

This is the correct response. Regardless of the product released there is always a subset of people on this site complaining about the screen. The sheer volume people who get overly anal retentive about color temperature on their iPhone every year is always comical to me.
We’ll be hearing the same stores from people who don’t even own or have seen these devices in person, once apple go with oled and micro led for future iPads.

The issue is there but for me isn’t a big deal. Very rare times where it’s noticeable as far as I’m concerned. In terms of using the device in darkness then sure you will notice it but I can’t say this will be my main usage for this display

For what is worth, here’s a picture of my device when using stock app at 50% brigntess in completely dark room
There is tiniest bit of bloom but to me part of it is the camera. Doesn’t show up like that irl

top left needs to be grey. So you can se it in camera that i’m not cheating by turning exposure way down.

For me photos do make things look worse. To me the eye it’s far better than what the camera produces.
Agreed but still (atleast my device)there is virtually zero bloom

so yeah, the pictures wloating around are ether defective or ”fake”

E: Here’s a picture of my 2018 MacBook Air with same camera settings and (around) same brightness nit. (Around 80-90% yes, the iPad screens are that bright)
A) The black quality is very noticeable
B) In dark room the camera will pick white objects at black background and show them as “bloom”. Also to me, my eyes does the same in OLED or in this Mac.

Ps. When I got this mac, I purchased 2 devices so I could get the one with least amount of bleeding. So this unit has almost none of it.

Oled does bloom, my c8 lg oled on vivid mode shows blooming on white text and white logos.
It simply doesn't. That's your eyes having trouble creating a sharp transition between white and black especially when it's light being emitted. OLED doesn't have backlights so it can't possibly bloom to begin with. Go right up to the screen and put a transparent grid matching the 4K pixels and you can see it's clear black vs white transition.

Like I said earlier, don't mix up what your eyes see with the problem which is a form of backlight bleeding except with local dimming zones in LED backlit displays.

That's not true blooming. If you cover up the white text you will see that the adjacent pixels are pure black. The 'blooming' on OLED is an illusion because your eyes can't reconcile the fine line between white and black pixels. If you have an OLED iPhone you can test this buy simply covering up the white Apple logo with your finger on the black start up screen and you can see that the glow that appears to be surrounding it isn't really there.

Go look at a full moon in the countryside. It blooms. Although I’m sure the sky is oled ?‍♂️

This is in city but still, horrible backlight bleed and uneven alltogether… *Sight* how the QC can be this bad. Would have expected more from nature :/ Def. gonna switch to Mars soon.
