Yeah that doesn't look right and the ipad can't just bend by itself. I would seriously question if someone did that or if you might of put it in your bag weird with other heavy items...

Did you apply excessive force on an angle? Are you the incredible hulk...?

Obviously some sort of force was applied, you (the OP) are just not aware of what it was.

The temps required to make aluminum mailable exceed the combustion temps many of its other components so it doesn't have anything to do with it. More then likely someone plopped their butt on it or it was in a bag or something.

You seriously think OP would sit on it? Really?

Heh, now that you mention it, it does seem unlikely. I have almost done the same before but for an iPad Air in a messenger bag. The Pro's size makes it unlikely. All the same, I remain convinced considerable external force was applied somehow.

If you're one of those people who leaves stuff like iPad or whatever on the ground or on the couch...etc...then I guess.

Imacca:

I'm putting up a theory that no one else has - only because I've seen this happen before. The battery is defective - and the chemical reaction has caused it to basically swell up under intense pressure.

I've only ever had it happen in a 2009 17" MBP - but when the underside started developing a ... lump slightly I opened it up and sure enough the battery was busting to get out of there...

So while this iPad in question isn't bulging - maybe the battery is causing some sort of buckling under pressure.... against the glass etc...

Again just a theory - I have no idea where the batteries are in that thing....

Just do a Google search of BATTERY SWOLLEN and you'll see tons of images of what happens... Some Macbooks too - with their aluminum bulging and bending...

Do you have any other pictures maybe 2 or 3 more with different angles?

Yup I've seen this before, in some portable power banks I've owned. The bulge usually causes the case to separate, which does not appear to be happening in this case.

Nope, nothing like it. We don't have kids or pets. It has only been used in the office or on the couch. Haven't even tried to put a cover on because there are none available in NZ yet.

That's it . . . someone's fat butt sat on it while it was on the couch. LOL

Well, I'm not trolling / photoshopping / whatever. I just wanted to find out if other people had the same issue. I don't think it came out of the box bent, and I know that I haven't handled it any other way than all of my other iDevices. I am a female software developer who's not heavy and not very strong, so I am as puzzled as everyone else as to why this could have happened. I have had 8 iPhones and 4 iPads before, as well as several MBPs and iMacs.
I understand why people think this doesn't just happen. I would have been the same if I didn't see it first hand!
Here's another photo from when I first took the iPad out of the box to compare it to all my other devices:

come on guys, don't be that mean & stupid. ever seen one of the first macbook pro's where the battery expanded? this could well bend an ipad. same with getting hot. you don't need it to get hot enough to melt something to bend it. you just have to get one side warmer, so it expands differently than the colder side. ever heard of a bimetal?
