I do have a feeling this may be short refresh cycle, quite possibly apple may ditch the 11” and 12.9” for possibly a 12” and 14” that would be 2 perfect sized for the pros in my oppinion.

It’s quite clear landscape orientation is coming to the Air and Pros in future generations, the base iPad 10 has set the president now.

How they’re going to do it is a bit up in the air… they could either release a 3rd Gen pencil with 2 magnets instead of 1 so the magnets on the side of the iPad will be either side of the camera section or they could introduce dynamic island which lowers the camera and allows them to stack the pencil magnet above it.

I do expect we will see new landscape pros in late 2023, with a new landscape air in early 2024.

The only thing I really expect from an update is some kind of a cpu performance increase, because that usually means slightly longer software support. Everything else is just extra motivation to upgrade—and it’s optional, because if it doesn’t all add up to a compelling sell, then fine I’ll save my money. 🤷‍♂️ It’s a win-win.

So the ONLY time I can be disappointed is when two conditions happen simultaneously: I need to buy a new device (eg. my existing device goes kaput), AND the newest update doesn’t have a cpu performance increase (eg. the first 16” MacBook Pro only got an updated design but kept the same processor from the 15”). I’ve never been disappointed yet, and since neither condition happens often, there’s a very slim chance that I ever will.

It's an incremental upgrade, I think some people here have been asking for it. For what it is, it's fine, as long as it's not made a bigger deal than it really is

So I don’t know about everyone else but I am hugely disappointed with the iPad Pro line up… new chip and hover, seriously is that it for 18 months of development? Even just adding miniLED to the 11” would have been something, but I am majorly disappointed. I can see iPad Pro sales simply flat lining this year.

Does anyone think this might be one of those short refresh cycles where we see an M3 refresh in 6-12 months…

It just seems very odd that so much effort was put into the 10th gen base iPad which actually has some features which are better than the Pros (landscape orientation, Magic Keyboard folio etc)… it no wonder apple didn’t have an event. What a shambles the line up is right now…

To me it feels like Apple is focusing their attention far more on the cheaper iPad line up and has just given up improving the pro line up at this stage… base line major refresh, Mini again major refresh, iPad Air basically an 11” pro but without a few bells and whistles, the pros are just stagnant now and seriously not worth the asking price at all.

iPad Pro is the only sensible iPad choice you can make today apart from the 9G.

9G is the entry level, ok if you want to go cheap.
10G is a joke.
Air doesn't come with 128GB.
Step up to 256GB and you can get the Pro M2 for a little more or probably the Pro M1 for a little less on a sale.

M2 update has been lazy but it'll be kept afloat by the fact that Apple is even lazier on the rest of the lineup.

I am disappointed that the 11” in what will be nearing 6 years come next refresh has only got better cameras, 5G, thunderbolt port and a better chipset.

That is quite abysmal for nearly 6 years of development IMO…
What would you change? Do you own one?

Hardware wise I would like to see the Magic Keyboard folio come to the pro’s, landscape camera, extra ports and miniLED or OLED on 11”.

I just think it’s laughable that the only upgrade the new pros have got is an M2 chip which won’t be utilised and a software feature with the Apple Pencil, seems like this release just happened so they can list the pros as new on the website.

I'm not disappointed. Sometimes upgrades are big, sometimes they aren't.

This upgrade is no different from the 2020 upgrade. You don't have to upgrade each year, just wait for the M3. It's fine for the base iPad to get the big upgrade one year because if you have an M1 iPad you don't really need the M2. Or if you have an older iPad save some money and get a discounted M1.

If Apple is moving to OLED, they wont burn effort on an 11" MiniLED screen.

The M3 iPad should be a nice upgrade with landscape camera and Pencil 3.

I think the problem is that it’s been 4 years of this design on the iPad Pro. Many of us have been asking for a landscape camera since year 3 of the iPad. So Apple instead makes the new iPad with tons of questionable design decisions, but gives them the landscape camera and function keys on a “cheap” product.

I was hoping they fixed the camera orientation in 2018 or at least 2020 with the Magic Keyboard, but assumed it would not take them 4+ years to do it - still waiting. Most likely it will be 5+ years where the camera is in the wrong position on your most expensive iPads that are priced up to $2,399USD.

It is inexcusable!
Landscape camera will come with the Pencil 3, probably in the next M3 version.

The iPad-10 got landscape camera, but with the old Pencil because there isn't space for the Pencil 2's magnet above the camera without increasing the bezel size.

I hope the M3 iPad keeps the overall body design so the existing keyboards are usable, and if Apple moves to a four pin Smart Connector, I hope the position doesn't change for the same reason. Front-facing speakers would be nice tho.

This video has given me some new ideas and inspiration on how existing features such as drag and drop can be better used.

Maybe the issue isn’t so much about getting more hardware innovation and more of learning to take better advantage of the tools that iPadOS already affords us.
I’ve been trying to do this. I realized that I was underutilizing tools that would improve my satisfaction with the iPad.

I am purchasing the new 11-inch iPad Pro next week. But also I am coming from a 6th generation iPad. Yes, the M2 chip is overkill for iPad, but, it will be more future proof. The extra RAM will certainly help. This upgrade isn't for everyone, but I am very excited to get mine soon.

Congratulations, having the M1 Pro I can say you won’t be disappointed.

I love this because of how much it flies in the face of those ‘power users’ on here that always whinge about how they can’t use an iPad. A unicorn loving girl (no less) bossing an iPad in ways that just can’t be achieved on a Mac. Excellent.

Six years?
Six years ago there was no 11 inch iPad Pro, six years ago there was a 9.7 inch iPad Pro.
also, outside of them moving the camera, what else do you want? You can’t really make it any thinner, you can’t really make it any smaller, there’s not much to redesign, the main problem is software.
I mean let’s just face it, tech redesigns don’t happen very often because companies have figured out what works.
The iPad is a flat piece of glass with an aluminum back. Not much to change about that.
You can slightly alternate between rounded sides and flat sides, but that’s about it.

Man, so many folks are gloom and doom, the M1 iPad was a major upgrade compared to previous ones. Yeah we only got a new processor this year, but the M1 still is a beast and not irrelevant and like others said you can get it cheaper now… or just get the M2, either one is fantastic. 2021 was the main big upgrade year… so 2023 or 2024 will be the next one.

The retooling cost of those extra 2” would be massive and internal redesign would also be required to take advantage of the extra space.
Also, 12” for two-handed use will be a stretch. Me holding 11” daily is already a struggle.
Air doesn't come with 64GB.
Why not coming with 64GB is a disadvantage now?
Wait, current iPad Air on Apple website DOES come with 64GB so what’s going on?

I agree. The 11" is too small, and the 12.9" is, in my opinion, a weird size and aspect ratio. It's too big to be easily portable, and too boxy for video content. Too much size for not enough usefulness. I really tried to make it work, but it was too cumbersome in the end and I returned it.

A 12" tablet with the aspect ratio of the 11", with a mini LED or OLED screen, combined with the camera in the right spot, would be perfect.

If they ever decide to ditch bezels (with some form of palm rejection when held), we could expect 12" and 14" iPads with roughly the sizes of the current ones, that would be neat.

For me, 12.9 is the minimum size for a productivity device/digital canvas/Sidecar monitor (I prefer an iPad Mini for very casual tablet use). I find the 12.9 very portable, but that’s all relative to what you choose to compare to. Also I love the aspect ratio. Longer aspect ratio would mean less bars for video, but that’s it. It would be worse for everything else, in my opinion, especially portrait orientation. For me, video watching is low priority on this device. Plus slightly bigger black bars don’t bother me at all.
Rather than a landscape camera, I would actually prefer a Magic Keyboard that can hold the iPad in portrait. I prefer using most apps in portrait when I can anyway, especially web browsing and any word docs. Plus the more elevated camera position would give you a more natural angle. Landscape camera has to point more up at you since it’s lower. But if there’s no portrait for MK, then I’d want a landscape camera.
As far as changes to the iPad itself, for my uses there’s not much I’d want to add, except things that it used to have—Touch ID which is my preference, a headphone port for audio work, and thicker bezels so I can handle the iPad more haphazardly.

Edit- it also used to have a flush back camera, which I’d want back.
Also front-facing speakers would be nice.
Also I want a portrait/landscape stand that can charge the iPad via the smart connector, like the Magic Keyboard does.
