If they ever decide to ditch bezels (with some form of palm rejection when held), we could expect 12" and 14" iPads with roughly the sizes of the current ones, that would be neat.
Gosh I really hope bezels don’t go away. I find them necessary. Even with really good palm rejection, there are situations where it can’t possibly distinguish between a press and a hold. When apps have touch targets on the edge of the screen (web page clickable links, tool buttons in art apps, etc), how will it know whether you’re holding the iPad with your thumb or long pressing a target? Even IF it gets it right the majority of the time, if there’s even a small chance of pressing a target unwittingly, confidence plummets. I would much rather have a bezel to hold the iPad where I absolutely know there’s zero chance of a press.

Maybe if they were virtual bezels that you and/or the app can choose to turn on/off as needed. I could see turning off the bezels and extending out the screen when watching a long movie with the iPad on a table.

I think it’s unfair to expect Apple to reinvent the wheel every time. Also I think people tend to keep their iPads for longer, 4-5 years at least and Apple know this so they aren’t chasing yearly upgraders.
The iPad Pro design is 4+ years old. I realize there is only so much you can do with a slab of glass, but for the top of the line iPad changes should start here first (not at the bottom). The iPhone SE never leads with new features, but the new iPad 10 has the landscape camera and a function row on its keyboard?

The portrait camera is terrible for my use case Magic Keyboard, etc. I don’t understand how Apple hasn’t fixed this especially since the introduction or the Magic Keyboard and cursor support. That’s my biggest problem with this update.

I decided to give the 2021 - 12.9” iPad Pro to my kids and upgrading to a Macbook Pro anyway. The iPad OS is so bad that this “update” with 16.1 (and the lackluster stage manager) finally made it an easy decision to leave the iPad ecosystem.

In all honesty I think the best iPad in terms of size and use is the iPad 9. It’s a perfect design still has a home button and has a headphone jack. And the price is Just right for a great experience.

All these yearly upgrades are bad for the environment
I agree with you, I have said this before.
There is zero consumer reason to update any Apple hardware every year.

Maybe the EU will jump on this after winning the (ridiculous) charging port battle.

I like how keeping the same design for a few years lets you have more options for cases, etc. Aside from the 12.9" 4th to 5th gen kerfuffle, Apple has been good about letting older accessories fit with newer iPads. Same cannot be said about iPhones, so you can't take it for granted.
