Gave me a chuckle when opening the box yesterday, I know Apple isn't a charity, I understand they are here to make money but come on, the cable they supplied with this iPad is pathetic. Before setting it up the first thing I did was go online and buy a longer cable.

That was much my thoughts when I opened it, well my exact thought was, pffffff.
It’s still in the box, didn’t even bother removing it. Thankfully I had a spare 2M one from my MacBook Pro, so that’s what I’m using. A 1M cable doesn’t even reach up and over my desk.

I take it your 2m usb-c cable is usb 2.0?

Can I ask a dumb question? Are USBC 3.1 gen2 cables fine for charging as well? I mean I know they can but is there any disadvantage in using them over the ones Apple provides?

They should be fine for charging. You might notice some have ratings for how high of a charge rate they support. I think the max is 100W - though obviously the iPad won’t charge at that rate.

One would imagine so, I think that’s what they were when I bought it in 2016 at least.
I don’t use that one to connect to my computer, only for power from the 87W USB-C charger. So it doesn’t make any difference to me in that respect. I was just meaning that the one in the box was clearly too short for my use.

Thing is, will the third party cables cause “this cable is not compatible with this Apple device...
And what USB-C cable is the right one to buy?

Kallum.
Yes, I’m confused over all the different USB-C types:- Which is better for charging, which is better for data transfer, which is ideal for connecting to an older MacBook Pro/iMac, can they be bought at 2mtr length and if so do they effect charging and data transfer speeds???

Understood. Many thanks.

How have they always been this way when the OP got the decent cable with their prior iPP and the spare nib with its Pencil?

Talking specifics is more interesting than handwaving that everything's always OK

The original iPhone came with a dock and a cleaning cloth. Then they stopped. Apple Watch came with a 5W adapter and then they stopped with the less expensive models.

Of course it’s annoying, but I’m saying that people are acting like Apple is doomed or some diabolical company because they “cheaped out”.

I actually didn’t look at the cable till now, but wow are they serious? This thing will barely reach a nightstand from a normal wall outlet. Luckily I already have USB-C chargers all around the house, but what a joke - $1500 tablet and you have to be 3 feet from an outlet to charge it. Plus it is USB 2.0 transfer speeds.

Taking the iPad out I thought "man this thing is nice". Taking the charging cable out I thought "what" and just stood there a minute. It is the lightest included cable I think I have received with any of my devices. Fully stretched it just makes it from the power stip on the floor to the top of the nightstand for charging and I know my nightstand is a "regular" height.

The cable is a joke. It feels so cheap even when comparing it to the MBP one (even though they both offer crappy speeds).

Yet people seem to buy it regardless of their anti-consumer practices. I would say...well done Apple!

Well done that customers are not happy as displayed on this enthusiast forum?
Well done from a shareholder perspective maybe.

Yeah this cord is garbage. I was going to keep it on my nightstand like I did with my previous Pro but the cable length is a joke.

As far as I'm concerned, Apple still offers the tech that I want and it cannot be beat in terms of quality or consistency. Others might disagree and that's fine, and I don't have a problem calling out Apple when it's due, but in this case a crappy cable included in the box with one of the most advanced tablet computers ever made is a compromise I am willing to live with.

Is MacRumors really an enthusiast site anymore? People here seem to bitch about Apple and every step they make more than any other place I visit; maybe I'm wrong but anytime I'm interested in hearing what Apple haters have to say about something Apple is doing I go to MR first.

Agreed, there’s quite an interesting bunch of users here, both haters and lovers it seems - and Macrumours seems to appreciate the mix. I guess if one would only want the positive it would be sufficient to just read imore and call it a day - they have enough kook aid for all of us! :)

The one in the box allows USB 2.0 transfer speeds but full 100W charging speeds apparently.

To get both USB 3.1/thunderbolt transfer speeds AND 100W charging speeds would have been a more expensive cable.

Either way, to get 100W charging and/or USB 3.1/thunderbolt transfer according to USB-IF specs can't be longer than 1m/3ft - which is why the apple cable is so short.

I'd like a recommendation on a good 6 foot cable for charging and syncing. Syncing doesn't have to be super fast.
Do they make usb c 3.1 gen 2 that are 6 feet that don' have as fast transfer speeds but would still be faster then non gen 2 cables?

No, because max 3.1 gen 2 is 1m. I can't recall even seeing a 3.1 gen 1 that is 2m.

Just buy this: https://www.apple.com/shop/product/MK122LL/A/power-adapter-extension-cable and a 1m TB3 or 3.1 gen2 cable. I assume you don't need it connected to a PC >3ft away.

I was just looking on amazon and found this (I never heard of Tiegem; any heard of them? ):
TIEGEM USB Type C 3.1 Gen 2 Cable (100W/10Gbps) USB C to USB-C Cable USB-IF TID interface Type-C PD Cable E-marker Power Delivery Wire For MacBook Pro Galaxy S9 S9 Plus OnePlus 6 (Red, 6.6ft)

I assume it's only 10gbps since its longer.
