I don't expected it to be unbendable. Of course if any amount of force is applied it will break an ipad or iphone. I just don't expect it to bend as easily as a soggy piece of bread!
I would expect it’s significantly more resistant than a soggy piece of bread, as an iPad Pro holds it shape when holding from one corner. A soggy piece of bread would have very little structural integrity. AND the weight of the water might actually lead to a catastrophic failure. Even if you make the iPad Pro soggy, it would still not be as easy to bend as soggy bread.

I had an iPad Pro to test with, but didn’t have access to soggy bread, so this is just another anecdote as I don’t have the numbers to back my claims.

This is what puts me off buying one, that and the unresponsive to touch screen issue. I had my iPad Pro 2017 replaced and from time to time this replacement has the same issue, it freezes and won’t recognise touch input.

And that's why I voted with my wallet and bought a Lenovo laptop instead. That laptop has lasted longer than my 2nd Gen. 12.9" iPad Pro, which experienced the unresponsive screen issue and became unusable after 13 months. The laptop also cost a lot less and does a lot more.



Same here - Lenovo laptop and Samsung tablet. They don't accidentally bend.

There are plenty of better materials to use than cheap beer can grade aluminum, especially at the prices Apple charges, like carbon fiber or magnesium, or strong nonslip plastic, or stronger aluminum with a thicker body and bigger battery...and an earphone jack!?

I don't know if I replied to this but I had a third gen for exactly 24 hours. It was very yellow without True Tone, it showed ripples similar to that iPad Air I had, and after reading this thread I just couldn't justify the cost.

Returned it and got myself a first gen off of Swappa. Little light bleed at the bottom in landscape mode but not bad enough to bother me. Saved myself a chunk of change and it serves the purpose.

I gave my first gen 9.7 to my husband. I just wanted a bigger tablet to watch shows and I like to read subtitles or I'm watching anime subbed. This 12.9 is good and having a headphone jack with Touch ID still benefit me greatly.

They do, if you accidentally apply an amount of pressure required to permanently deform them :)

It was hard enough getting it replaced the first time. They initially wanted to charge me £500. It wasn’t until I sent and email to Phil Schiller that I got a phone call from Apple Executive Relations, after a conversation with them a box arrived the next day to sent my faulty iPad Pro back to Apple. Within 24 hours I had a new one delivered.

That was in late 2018, and my 2017 was out of warranty then. It’s certainly out of warranty now.

Which current iPad Pro models are having bending issues? I was seriously considering one, but haven't decided on which size yet.
They all bend, to some degree. There’s anecdotal information that says the latest ones are more susceptible to bending. Unfortunately, since no one knows how much pressure it takes to bend one, there’s no way for you to judge if your personal day to day use will bend one.

Using common sense will help, people have reported their iPad's being bent out of the box when they ordered one. That shouldn't happen. People have also reported putting their iPad in their bag, upon taking it out they have noticed it has bent. That shouldn't happen.

If someone picks up the iPad Pro and snaps it in half, that isn't Apple's fault, but if someone is using it in their daily life, taking it to school, work and using it at home, if it then bends that is Apple's fault. The iPad's should be built to withstand daily use.

But, what people HAVEN’T reported is exactly how much pressure their iPad Pro was exposed to IN the bag. The only thing we know is that it was exposed to enough pressure to permanently deform the iPad Pro. If we knew that amount was, say, 20 pounds of pressure or torque, then we could ask the question, is it reasonable for an iPad Pro to be exposed to 20 pounds of pressure as a part of “daily use”?

If there was ANY scientific analysis done on this at all, then folks could say, “Oh, I’m VERY careful with my electronics and I’d never expose them to 20 pounds of pressure, so I feel more confident getting the iPad Pro.” Unfortunately information about bent iPad Pros is anectodotal and just because one person’s iPad Pro in heavy use for 6 months is NOT bent, that doesn’t say that someone else won’t accidentally bend theirs on the second day.

There’s absolutely no scientific information on how precisely how much effort it takes to permanently deform an iPad Pro. If someone were to perform such a test, then we’d know exactly how much effort is required to permanently deform an iPad Pro. Then, we can discuss and consider if that much effort should be thought of as “normal every day use”.

The only thing that we can say is inarguably true, is that every bent iPad Pro (that was not bent new in box) most likely experienced an amount of pressure that would be required to permanently deform an iPad Pro (a few may have been bent by mystical or other means?). Apple considers that much pressure outside of normal every day use. And, we also infer that there are iPad Pro’s that have not been subjected to that amount of pressure and, as a result, are not bent.

And you’re operating under the assumption that it need be bent in order to have the malfunctiowning/unresponsive screen and I’m telling you that isn’t the case.

No, those are two separate issues that people bring up in the same posts. My earlier iPad Pro that had a bad screen was not bent, it just became less responsive to touch and eventually experienced a screen darkening issue (on the left held with the home button down). The replacement I got, that was also not bent, also became less responsive to touch. The replacement for that one has not had the issue.

Yes but people shouldn’t have to use one of there 2 accidental damage instances on something that is not there fault. Also people who don’t have Apple Care would have to pay to get a replacement. I don’t think that is reasonable.

People should be able to expect there iPad’s to live up to a certain amount of pressure including everyday wear and tear. Now everyday wear and tear is a common sense thing (as I already stated). If someone is going to throw there iPad on the floor, of course it isn’t Apples fault if it breaks and the user should then pay. However if someone is taking care of there iPad and only putting it in there bag with everyday items and it then comes out bent, Apple should be responsible.

Some of the iPad Pro’s 3rd gen, we’re arriving bent out of the box. That certainly isn’t the users fault.

We’re in agreement on this. If it’s not their fault they shouldn’t pay for it.

The only disagreement is what criteria are used to determine if it’s their fault. I don’t think it’s realistic for Apple to just take the word of every customer that just says, “It’s not my fault”.

And because no one outside Apple has done any testing on this, only Apple knows how much pressure is required to bend. And to Apple, that much pressure is outside of everyday wear and tear. All it would take is one person to run a scientific test, show how that much pressure should be within everyday wear and tear, and that person’s videos would have millions of hits by tomorrow :)

I have the previous version Ipad Pro 12.9 from 12/16 works great. I stuff it in my back pack every day and use it until the batteries run low. I am holding off replacing until Apple fixes the disposable $$$$ Ipad Pro issue. Unfortunately not enough people return junk and are willing live with it or are intimidated by sales people. Warranties are a legal promise made to the consumer. If you have an issue with a product. Be polite. Be persistent hold your ground and ask for management if you have an issue. Most important don't wait until the Warranty has expired and expect to get help.

Yes don't tell me my old Ipad is slow. I know but it's flat and dependable.

I’ve pretty much read this entire thread in regards to this ‘bending’ issue. I’ve had mine since the 1st of February and I’m loving it. I don’t notice any defects - besides, I always keep my iPad in a sturdy sleeve that protects it from other things when I have it in a bag. I’ve traveled with it from NY to NJ on public transportation with being bumped into and having to run, etc and still solid as it was when I first bought it. I don’t know what is causing for others to have their issue with theirs, but so far, mine is perfect. I don’t tend to mistreat my electronics, I treat them as such - expensive devices. I am not going to intentionally put them in harms way just because “they’re portable and meant for that type of abuse”. I didn’t spend over $1,400 for me to treat this as if it’s worth $5. I am going to take care of it like I did my MBP and my cell phone - all expensive technology that has cost me thousands of dollars and have lasted me for years with my usage. If you’re careless with your devices, then I wouldn’t recommend this iPad because it is thin and needs protection - but not because of the fact that it has ‘bending’ issues, because it is an expensive piece of technology. It is common sense to take care of it. I didn’t toss around my MBP just because it was ‘portable’. I still took care of it and placed it in a safe compartment. I knew not to lean against it or to sit on it because you don’t do that with any piece of technology, no matter the price. Overall, just take care of your things. If you want to buy it, buy it. Have your own experience. Don’t go by the negatives from those that do not even own the device. In the end, it is your money, you do with it what you want. Buy it, don‘t buy it. It’s not going to change the fact that this is a great piece of technology. If you think you can make something better, go for it!

Everything scares me about my idevices. This iPad is no different than all 12 iPads I’ve owned... all can bend with pressure. Off-topic...
But I’m having a freak moment as I was lifting the Smart Cover on my iPad and I lost my grip and it slapped back down on the iPad ?‍♂️. It sounded loud, so far no visible damage or creaking has been seen or heard, but should I be worried about causing damage to the internals (knocking something loose) or a possibility of reduced longevity (concerning the glass and lcd not staying glued in place???)
I know I’m acting stupid, its just been a tough week with a new job so my OCD and anxiety are in overdrive, so things like this bug me.
May I ask you level headed people for your $0.2 to help kind of knock me out of my obsessing and paranoia?

Odd question...
Will my iPad bend or get damaged if I let the smart cover/folio fall on it or Kind of slap it over the iPad (and if makes a light slap noise)... is that totally fine, (like it won’t damage the iPad.) *I ASK because I usually very slowly roll the cover over the iPad but it slipped through my fingers and smacked shut.
*I have a glass cover on it but again sorry for being super dumb or asking a dumb question.

***I just started a new job so my OCD and anxiety are going nuts. So again, sorry if this is a waste of your time. I just figured I’d ask a sane person.

Edit: Nevermind, I watched YouTube and everyone seems to just slap the cover over the glass and move on. So I assume I’m good... Darn anxiety and (actual) OCD. ??‍♂️
