I think this is ridiculous for apple to put out a new rev in 3 to 4 months. The iPad just launched. I mean it's a brand new product and there isn't enough data for apple to justify a rev B at this stage. Also, how many times have everyone here follow some ridiculous plot and it turned out to be something simple.

Even the existence of an apple tablet caused ridiculous gadget fantasies in our heads. Look at what apple has done with all their products, they get a refresh once a year.

Expect an iPad refresh next year. The Ipad 4.0 delay is because the iPad just came out and it's a based off the iPhone. iPhone is wayyyy more important to apple. And they are dedicating their resources to making sure that the OS is ready by the time the new iPhone comes out. Nothing more.

Once that is done. They will optimize it for the iPad. Remember, the iPad is 4x the resolution that the iPhone. Trust me, that does cause problems. Which is why the iPad is based on iPhone os 3.2 not 3.1.3.

All of us are crazy, and you are sane? Yes?
When was the iPod Touch last updated? Around September 2009. When was it updated before that? Around September 9, 2008. It came out the previous September. Do you see a trend here? It's roughly a year. A year is more than 245 days.

I think it depends on how Apple sees their future updates falling as far as category and calendar cycle.

We've only seen one iPad announcement which I think was an oddball since it was an initial launch, like with the iPhone. The first iPhone was announced in January, but all future updates have happened in the summer.

If Apple sees iPad updates falling in line with iPod updates, meaning fall timeframe for holiday sales and a media-focused event, then they might set the precedent with a minor update this year during the fall iPod event.

I will bet that the iPad will get *some* stage time in the fall to detail the new 4.0 OS for iPad, so maybe there will also be a *minor* spec bump or price drop. Maybe the 16GB model will go away and the 32GB will fall to the $499 slot.

We might get a clue with how Apple presents the new iPhone this summer. If it includes a front facing camera and iChat and Apple makes this the main focus of the new device then that might point to an updated iPod touch and iPad with front facing cameras at the fall event.

The iPad is not an iPhone, iPod, Mac Mini, Apple TV, MacBook Pro, MacBook, iMac, etc

Know what that means? There's no data yet as to its refreshes, etc. No one knows and no one will until Apple actually announces it. Speculate from now until the cows come home and reference data that has as much to do with the iPad as how much tea was sold last night at your local Starbucks.

See, here's someone that is communicating what I'm trying to say. It seems very reasonable to me that the iPad is the type of device that they'll try to clear out during back to school (like the iPod Touch) and then try to sell new models of during the holiday shopping season.

So everyone, don't get your panties in a bunch. Fall is a long time away. iPad is a very cool device, buy one now and enjoy it.

Based on (1) the available evidence and (2) Apple's sales tactics history, it seems to me that an updated iPad or at least some sort of iPad price drop will be coming in the fall.

The evidence:

(1): This is how Apple does things. Whenever they can, they try to extract a few extra bucks out of their early adopters. The original iPhone fiasco is the most obvious example but the same things could be said about the first gen iPod Touches which got a "fortunately timed" $100 price drop and the original unibody MacBooks.

The price drop on the iPhone was a PR nightmare for Apple. You even call it a fiasco in your "evidence". Do you think Apple wants to relive that experience? They ended up having to give Apple Store credits people were so pissed. The credit wasn't in the original plan but was used to curtail the backlash from the fans.

Don't count on Apple making the same mistake twice. An announcement early next year with the release in 10-12 months from now.

^^ This.

Also, there are ALWAYS cool things that don't make it into a product the first time. Either there was some slight glitch in getting it done, or the part didn't come in on time, or someone thought of it literally the day after the design was frozen.

I'll guarantee that there has been a list ever since V1 was frozen of all the things they want to put into V2.

Plus, they'll take feedback from various spots. Yeah, I know that supposedly they don't do this, but if there's something up on a message board someplace that somehow makes perfect sense to them, they'll consider it. It may not look like the original feedback as usually their spin will go on it, but they do listen, just not directly.

There are a couple of things already that I can see were left out, mainly SW but some minor SW stuff as well. Overall execution for a V1 product is still an "A" if not "A+" at this point.

Will there be enough to issue a new HW spin in the fall/Holiday season? Dunno - and they'll be comparing how well their sales are versus their internal forecasts as well. Maybe they feel they're doing well enough without a refresh, or maybe something crops up that they want to address.

Impossible to say at this point.

I'd just about guarantee that there are lists and roadmaps for v2, 3, 4 and perhaps beyond as to what features they are going to introduce and those that are on a wish list.

Apple isn't going to create another Original iPhone $200 price drop fiasco again. That was a PR disaster for Apple. I wouldn't expect a price drop until the next iPad, anything before that is bound to anger quite a lot of people.

Waiting for iPad with Retina Display and Camera.

I have decided the iPhone 4G makes the iPad look alot less magical. To make it a killer ereader they need to have the same pixel density as the iPhone 4, so type gets the appearance of printed text. Then the iPad can fullfill it's destiny as a replacement for textbooks, etc. Add the front and back cameras and iMovie and FaceTime and I will get it. Until then I am waiting.

What does anyone else think?

A retina display will be very expensive on the iPad. IF it ever comes it will be an expensive Build to order. MAybe even get a pro moniker. I want a 17" MAcBook Pro with a retina display. And that is not sarcasm.

How the hell does the iPhone 4 make the iPad less "magical"?

The iPad has a gorgeous display. It's stunningly beautiful and everything about it, down to the colours (blacks are deep, colours are vivid, not to mention the IPS display) is excellent.

If you're disappointed because a 3.5 inch smartphone has a retina display over a 10" iPad, then I'm not sure what to tell you.

I highly doubt we'll see a retina display on the iPad in the next generation. The resolution would have to be extremely high for the 9.7" screen. A front-facing camera is very likely since every Apple product with a display has a front-facing camera except for the iPod lineup.

Thanks for letting us know. We were all sitting in waiting to hear about your purchasing decision.

Not one bit dissapointed in either product actually, as I have an iMac, Macbook, Dell Mini 9 running OS X, iPhone 3GS, I can't justify the iPad YET. iPads will get retina displays eventually, and that's when it becomes a killer eReader for me. Only when text gains the appearance of printed text will it be truly "Magical" for me. This iPad display is just fine for now and yes quite beautiful, just projecting ahead that's all.

Not going to happen for a few years...that density on a screen the size of the ipad would need a BEAST of a chip to run, it would not even run on the current chip.

I'll be amazed if they even double it for Ipad 2.

But 132 or whatever the ipad is now will certainly be improved.

What does anyone else think?

Well, it is obvious you don't care what anyone else thinks. You haven't read the 1,000 other threads in the forum that talk about your lost battery life, impossible processor/GPU requirements, and massively inflated production costs... So why bother asking for anyone elses opinion?

Go ahead and wait. I'm sure therre will be something that will come along that may make you want to wait until version 3... and then 4... I'll enjoy my iPad tonight, tomorrow, and for years to come. Even if there is a newer, more magical version in the future.

I am waiting for a true retinal display with an interface right into my ganglion cells! Infinite resolution!

And I have decided to take a trip into town to go make groceries... Does anyone else care ? I just hope and pray they don't put that damn camera on it. USB dongle one through the dock connector if you wish, but give me a choice come upgrade time...

I'm waiting for the iPad 3D. It's going to be truly revolutionary and magical
