A retina display will be very expensive on the iPad. IF it ever comes it will be an expensive Build to order. MAybe even get a pro moniker. I want a 17" MAcBook Pro with a retina display. And that is not sarcasm.
While I would too, let me fill you in on the reality of that statement.

Current 17" MacBook Pro has a resolution of 1920x1200. It would need to be 4800x2600 in order to match the pixel density of the iPhone 4's retina display.

Not likely happening. ;)

If you're waiting for that, you'll be waiting a long time. Retina display for iPad won't happen for a loooooong time. Too pricey.

I'm waiting for the iPad that tells me it loves me unconditionally.

No seriously, my Orbino iPad case has a hole carved out at the top front where a ooh front-facing c-a-m-e-r-a lens would go. Hmmm... :p

I love it when people just seem to think they know how engineering and manufacturing work and just say "I'm sure the ipad will have this next gen"

They think just because the iphone has a feature that automatically ports over to ipad.

I had someone tell me they will buy an iPad when they put a phone in it!!!!

WHAT???????? what the hell for? you gonna hold it up to your ear? I told him they make an ipad with a phone already. its called an iphone. it just a small iPad:)

True. But, it wouldn't be a bad idea to have a phone app that you could use with a BT headset. It could be a clone version of your phone (at an additional cost) or maybe an additional line.

There's always gonna be a reason to wait. If the iPad gets that stuff, then within a few months the iPhone will get something better. Are you going to wait for that stuff all over again?

Like people have said, I doubt we will see Retina displays for bigger screens for years yet. It's different for small devices like iPhones, iPods etc.

I do however, think we will see the laminated glass/screen.

I have decided the iPhone 4G makes the iPad look alot less magical. To make it a killer ereader they need to have the same pixel density as the iPhone 4, so type gets the appearance of printed text. Then the iPad can fullfill it's destiny as a replacement for textbooks, etc. Add the front and back cameras and iMovie and FaceTime and I will get it. Until then I am waiting.

What does anyone else think?

I think that I couldn't care less what you decide to buy. This site is for rumors and news about apple, not to describe what you'd like to buy. Nobody cares.

The lack of camera and "Retina Display" on the iPad are due to marketing if you think about. With the Retina Display and FaceTime on the iPhone, Apple can rightly call the iPhone 4 a "game-changer". And the iPad, regardless of all its features, could also rightly be called a "game-changer". So that makes it seem like Apple is making breakthroughs everywhere, and it seems like that to the Macheads and everyone else also. It'd be different if the iPad that came out first had FaceTime and a Retina Display.

Stupid comment, and needlessly sarcastic to the op, you read the thread title, there was no point being sarcy to him/her.
Thanks for your feedback. Your views are very important to me.

Do you think, or perhaps would you like to see the next iPad take on the same style of the new iPhone.

Now, don't shoot me down here, but I think the dead flat front and back black glass and the steel surround (with the ability to pop on colored protective bands around the outside) has instantly made the current iPad look a bit old fashioned wit it's curved back.

Perhaps it's just me, but an iPad dead flat like the new iPhone would make it look really smart. I know however they have only made the iPad with a curved back to make it look thinner than it really is due to the large batteries, so perhaps this won't happen anytime soon.

One other question :)

Are you happy that the iPad and iPhone appear to have about the same power now? Or would you like to see the iPad keep the lead as it's potentially going to be used for more demanding tasks in the future as it's abilities expand.?

I don't think the curved back looks out of fashion/date, I really like it, plus bare in mind that aluminium is a different material that adds a classy vintage feel to the ipad, that the curved back iphones lacked. As you said it also enables the use of a larger battery and I would add better handling of the device as well.

Think about it this way, if an ipad lies flat on a surface, how are you going to pick it up if there are no curved edges? You would have to drag it to the end of the table, bench etc. to get a grip on it, or even worse use two hands. But now with the curved design you can actually pick it up from the curved edge that leaves room for your fingers to slide under. The iphone on the other hand can be picked up with one hand by it's edges.

As with most things apple, it's very well thought out and cleverly designed.

Of course the iPhone 4G is more magical, because there is no such thing as the iPhone 4G.

Using a retina display on iPad would be insanely awesome, however ipads would then cost $1500+ and the graphics card and processors needed to handle the graphics would kill the battery and create a lot of heat, and even expensive video games don't have that kind of resolution

I calculated it and with 326ppi the resolution would be 2527x1875

I'm actually waiting for the iPad 5g which will have retina display, 17 cameras, flash and will make paninis. Until that comes out, apple won't be getting any more of my dough.

You are welcome, but you can thank me later when you get the hang of actually being ironic instead of deluding yourself that you are.

He was being straight-out funny, but not specifically ironic. The fact that you thought he was trying to be ironic means you didn't get the joke. Please feel free to reply if you disagree. Your reply is very important to me.

While all this discussion is going on... I am enjoying my iPad TODAY. I'm reading books, watching videos, listening to music, surfing the web, and playing games, wherever I want, whenever I want.

Are u having trouble viewing your screen because I can see mine just fine. This screen stuff is getting ridiculous.

For a smartphone with a 3.5" screen, where you are trying to cram as much screen real-estate into the form factor as possible, a retina display makes sense. For the iPad, it doesn't. Not that it wouldn't be cool. But the cost and power requirements to drive that many pixels would be ridiculous. 1024x768 is a normal, practical res for a small tablet computer. This will end up higher in a few years, but I don't expect any big changes from Apple on iPad screen res for a while. Its a different animal.

Also, I think most people hold the iPad farther from their eyes than a phone, effectively increasing the pixel density. I do.
