Not one bit dissapointed in either product actually, as I have an iMac, Macbook, Dell Mini 9 running OS X, iPhone 3GS, I can't justify the iPad YET.

Hey, we must be long-lost twins! I've got an iPad but I can't justify the MacBook, Dell Mini 9, or iPhone 3GS yet. (I cop to the iMac, which I seldom use anymore.)

iPads will get retina displays eventually, and that's when it becomes a killer eReader for me. Only when text gains the appearance of printed text will it be truly "Magical" for me.

My thoughts exactly, only in reverse: All kinds of products will get all kinds of features eventually — I'm totally expecting an MS "Furrier" which will have thought-control and also purr when you touch it — but for the short term I like to own things that actually exist.

So like, enjoy your Dell Mini, I guess.

I'm going to do what i did with the iphone, wait till 2nd generation.
2nd gen will likely have.
-Cameras assuming front and back like iPhone.
-128GB of storage (there will be a chip capable of this bye then)
-Even better specs under the hood.

I'm waiting for the iPad 3D. It's going to be truly revolutionary and magical

Thats what Steve tweeted a few weeks ago. 3D LCD.

I have also been told via app programers, the new IPAD resolution is x4 the current screen. originally they all thought this was for an external 27" monitor. Now they have seen the new iphone screen... they are unsure.

The same team discovered the API's for front and rear camera for the IPAD.

I believe Steve will roll out an update ever 6 months for this IOS device, around september i think we will see a new Ipad.

I have decided the iPhone 4G makes the iPad look alot less magical. To make it a killer ereader they need to have the same pixel density as the iPhone 4, so type gets the appearance of printed text. Then the iPad can fullfill it's destiny as a replacement for textbooks, etc. Add the front and back cameras and iMovie and FaceTime and I will get it. Until then I am waiting.

What does anyone else think?

Not another: "I've decided this or that" or "Convince me of this or that", or "Why no this or that" thread.

Wait, but how about waiting in silence?

The iPad has a gorgeous display. It's stunningly beautiful and everything about it, down to the colours (blacks are deep, colours are vivid, not to mention the IPS display) is excellent.

The iPhone 4 also has an IPS display.

To get 4x the pixels on iPad you would need a 2048x1536 display which is higher res than the 15inch MBP with the 'hi-res' option. For games to support that display they would need something faster than an A4 and SGX 535. Not to mention a lot more memory for the higher resolution textures.

While it would be nice I don't see it happening anytime soon.

I suspect unless some new magical method of manufacturing is invented, trying to get a pixel density of 326 on a significantly larger screen would be too expensive to pull off. Years down the line I'm sure it would be possible, but right now it is unlikely.

It's the incredibly small size of the screen that lets them push the boundaries of pixel size for this particular screen.

To try and put it in context, really high end computer monitors, the kind used by neural surgeons have a resolutions of like 3840×2400, with a pixel density of 204. That's REALLY good on a 22" screen, far better than your typical 42" HDTV (1920×1200, 52 pixel density).

To cram that many pixels onto an iPad screen would be taking the current iPads resolution from 1024x768 and pixel density of 132 and needing to scale it up 2.5 times. The end result would be a screen with a resolution of 2560x1920 with a pixel density of 320.

Now, I wouldn't complain in the least if Apple can find a way to sell a screen like that on a product for around $500, but in the current world of monitor displays, those types of specs are typically high end photo and graphic monitors that are usually around 27" to 30" in size that only professionals use, and which cost $1000+ just for the monitor.

This future gen iPad would far surpass the Cintiq 21UX, and that costs $2000!

So I guess what I'm saying is that it might be a very long wait... but I'd be overjoyed if I was wrong.

If I had to choose one or the other, the iPhone is a clear winner.

But I don't have to choose.

Next year when the iPad ships with all our hopes and dreams I'll upgrade. In the mean time, the iPad is pretty awesome.

I think you'll be waiting a long time. Based on Jobs' explanation of what a "retina" display is (300 dpi based on a viewing distance of 12 inches), you'd be looking at a 9.7" screen with a 2400x1800 resolution. That gives you 309 ppi, which is close to the iPhone4.

This isn't happening for a long long long long time. You'd be wasting battery and CPU cycles for not much gain. Sure, magazines might look better, but why would you need a "retina" display for a text book?

NOTE - if you allow for an assumption that the iPad would be viewed at a greater distance than an iPhone you could drop the resolution down to 1600x1200 and retain over 200 ppi. IMHO, that's more doable and would result in sharper images and pages. This resolution would also allow for pixel-trippling of the current iPhone's resolution quite easily.

I think this is a key point. I picked up an iPod touch at Best Buy yesterday and I was playing with it inches from my face. When I use an iPad, it's usually at desktop level.

This "waiting" word...it's definition escapes me.

I have this saying that I made up all by myself: "Waiting is for people who have their lives to waste."

Seriously...if you're just going to sitting around waiting for the NEXT coolest gadget...you'll never experience what I am experiencing now with my 3G iPad...which is pure bliss. It is by far the coolest gadget I have ever owned.

The iPhone 4 is extremely cool...don't get me wrong....but you're missing the point of the iPad....it's the SCREEN SIZE!!! The iPhone could have the most pixels, the most definition the most whatever....but it is still tiny compared to the iPad.

Get yourself an iPad of some variety, get yourself a manbag or a small backpack....and go experience coolness NOW!

Steps off of soapbox.

Steve

First of all, I doubt iPad will get 326 DPI display. Most likely, it will get double the resolution (2048x1536), offering 4 times the pixel count.

While I think 2011 is too soon for such display (along with beefier yet just as efficient processor to handle additional graphical chores), it will definitely happen few years down the road. I suspect front camera will be the standard feature on next generation of iPad, and quite possibly 3G as well. Otherwise, I expect 2G iPad to be a small update (e.g., faster CPU and/or 512 MB memory).

Seriously how stupid is this thread. The iPad would need about 200 more pixels per inch to have a retina display!!! How much would that cost. It would be ridiculous you are living in a dream world + iPhone 4 isn't that much better than 3G s. Who actually uses a front facing camera on their phone? It looks a bit prettier and it has a brighter/ sharper display. Everything elseissoftwarewhich is coming to the iPhone 3G s and the iPad. that's my rant over:D

A bit harsh, wouldn't you say?

Anyways, I think the retina display complaint has been settled, pretty much. The iPad isn't getting a 300 ppi screen anytime soon. Perhaps an upgraded resolution in the next iPad, but not 300 ppi.

As for the front facing camera on a phone, I think lots of folks want this. Hell, 46.2% of the complaints during the 3GS debut was that there wasn't a front facing camera. Video chatting on cell phones is going to explode in the next few years. It's gonna happen.

As for the assertion that the iPhone4 not having much of a hardware upgrade over the 3GS, I would point to the following items:

1. The A4 processor should be a huge upgrade to the one used in the 3GS
2. The iPhone4 has the gyro in it that should provide lots of cool stuff for games.
3. The iPhone4 has 802.11n
4. The front facing camera ... your opinion is noted
5. LED flash for the camera
6. HD video capability

The 3GS won't have these features, even after upgrading the iOS4.

Now, you may not need/want/use these upgrades ... that's your choice, but a think lots of folks will look at the jump from 3GS>4 as being a much bigger jump from 3G>3GS.

Good points. The iPhone 4 is the first iPhone that is making me upgrade from the 2G. Camera is much better along with the screen. The A4 processor should be great and I don't think people realize how big HD video recording is going to be. Cisco is having a heart attack right now with their Flip camera division.
