MacOS is still essentially what we got in 1998 but with a slightly modernised UI, but underneath those it's more or less the same 1990s OS. It's not designed for touch, it doesn't play nice with mobile data connections, it's chrome takes up way too much of the screen for a small device like an 11" iPad. Just an all round bad idea
I'm not sure what you mean about the mobile data connections or chrome that takes up space, but I agree on it not being built for touch. Which is why they didn't just put macOS on the iPad and had to add some touch interfaces to the macOS-esque features.

It was comical to me the demo showed an iPad with a keyboard and stand lol. So basically a laptop 🤦‍♂️. It’s apparent that they are turning 1 device into 5. Soon they are gonna pitch a smaller watch that can sit on your other wrist. The Apple Bracelet! Starting at just $599 🙄
Given the addition of the phone app and the macOS influence in iPadOS 26, I think it would be more possible to actually make 3 devices into 1. An iPad mini could now possibly cover for phone, tablet, and most traditional computer tasks with the exception of non-app store apps.

No, there is a tool to safely remove devices on Windows.
This is what I’ve always seen on Windows, but a few weeks ago I copied a file from a USB3 external drive on Windows 11, and there was no eject option that I could find anywhere. I wasn’t worried about it, because I only copied a file off of the drive, so eventually I just disconnected it. I wonder if they’ve buried that “eject” tool someplace obscure recently. 🤷‍♂️

My understanding is MacOS has no idea about mobile data connections and treats them like a regular network so if it feels the need to send or receive a metric buttload of data it will just go do it. iPadOS on the other hand is far more circumspect on what it pulls across a mobile network. I seem to recall years ago using my phone as hotspot for my laptop and it just obliterated my data allowance

Oh okay. I suppose if they were to implement cell connection then they would add the necessary understanding to MacOS. iPadOS inherited it from when it was iOS. As for the hotspotting, you can go into MacOS wi-fi settings and limit data for certain networks.

Does Goodnotes not show on the share sheet? Then it's only two taps. If not, why not?
Just checked and it's not there. No clue why, can't even add it when I go to edit the share sheet. But this is what I don't like about iOS: you can't just drag anything to any app. You have to specifically "Share" it and then you have to be lucky enough that the app shows up in the share sheet. Otherwise you have to jump through hoops.

IDK, some apps (like Affinity Photo) let you open another app in slide over or Split View and literally drag files into them - you might be able to do that with it

I'm looking at the Goodnotes help and it specifically says 'open in Goodnotes' should be in the share sheet in other apps. It also says drag and drop via slide over is supported.

Just get a Mac if you really need to do something productive.

Jesus. This whole "I want Mac on my iPad" is a complete waste of millions of hours of engineering
I don't want the whole Mac, I do want to easily move a file from my iPad to a folder on the server, and maybe even back, preferably while seeing both the source and destination. You know, like the Apple 2GS could do over Local Talk back in 1988.

I'm pleasantly surprised that my A13 equipped iPad will get this update. It's the best news of the day.

no no no no, and I can't stress this enough, no!

I use the iPad because it's NOT a Mac. I don't want a 1990s OS that's been dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st century on my iPad which has a much more modern OS already.
You know that iPadOS and macOS are the same under the hood right?

And iOS and MacOS have the same underpinnings. But you'd never look at your phone and say 'yep that's a Mac' would you? Literally everything the user sees and interacts with is different. I mean, nowadays everything is Unix if you dig deep enough.
My point is it might be the same underneath but it presents as a totally new OS, and because it doesn't run Mac apps they had total freedom to build a UI that was suited to a touch interface. As soon as you make it run Mac apps you ruin that experience

File Explorer has a menu option under "Drive Tools" for safe ejection when you are in the context of the drive. There's also an option for it in the hidden menu on the right side of the taskbar (the little carrot to show background items). There's a little USB icon that will list the connected USB devices with the option to safely eject.

I just used a windoze box recently and didn't see that. Where is it?

Did they finally add support for wired file transfers using the Files app and Finder? Does it show up in Finder like it always should have? I always thought it was crazy for them to add Thunderbolt support, but still force AirDrop transfers from Finder to the Files App directly. AirDrop is garbage for anything larger than a gig or two where it usually just fails.

It’s nice that the Files app has finally arrived. It’s been a long wait. 📱

1. You can drag and drop content with universal control.
2. Sounds like a new Airdrop 2.0 would solve this.

Nice to see the changes to the Files app and also all the changes to iPadOS. A very good update for iPadOS!

Hope these improvements are on the Files app on iOS too. Anyone who tested the beta to see the improvements in Files on an iPhone?

Has it? Really?

I am, a huge iPad advocate and use it every day. That said, the absolutely pathetic excuse of a file system has such a long, long way to go, I’m not sure the train has pulled into the station yet. Caveat: not running the OS here. Not trying to rain on the parade, just have my doubts.

Isn't that how Windows works though?
It's always been funny how "the world's most advanced operating system" can't do something WinXP could do. What I'm kinda tired of is the icon disappearing and there still being disk activity. If you pull it too soon macOS stops liking you.

It looks cool but fundamentally it doesn’t matter what they do with it unless they make it extendable. Oh sorry, someone sent me a RAR, guess I can’t open it. Oh you sent a mkv, I can’t that sorry.

It’s nice for a bit more control, but in the end, it’s still going to fall short. Something this new Apple seems quite good at doing. Cool F1 roof race bruh.
I agree. Also, does the Files.app in iPadOS 26 allow folders to be treated as folders after they have been renamed?

As I understand it, the share sheet is necessary because of the iPad’s sandboxed apps approach which is fundamental to the iPad’s security—in which case it’s on developers to properly support the share sheet. Apps missing from the share sheet is one of my biggest issues with iPad usability, but I don’t know if there is anything Apple can do about it besides beg developers or basically scrap the iPad altogether and make a Mac tablet (I don’t think they should scrap it).

As the users will be able to set a default App for each extension type, presumably it will be possible to set a default for .rar files to open in iZip or similar.
