I always use a case on my phone, so I don’t have this problem. Those of you who choose not to use a case will encounter this problem much sooner than those of us who use a case.
It happened to mine with a case on, within 3-4 months. It actually seemed to slow down after I took the case off. It seemed like the trapped dust did a lot of damage

This has been a known issue since iPhone 5, coincidentally after Steve Jobs passed away.
Steve Jobs would have NEVER shipped iPhones with paint chipping/low quality iPhone finishing.

OP mentions that this is still an issue with iPhone 12, 13, 14, 15, and probably also will be with iPhone 16.
Steve Jobs did a lot of great things for Apple and launched its most important products.

But he was no magician and cannot prevent the coating that they use to color metals with from coming off.

I can entertain the thought that the issue is more noticeable for certain iPhone models and less for others. But it's impossible to avoid.

Put a case on it or get one of the lightly coated or "raw" finishes without coating if you want to avoid it entirely.

I have the same issue with my iPhone. I’ve kept mine in a soft case and take very careful care of my phone, since the cost for 1TB models aren’t cheap by any scope. I too would expect better quality from a reputable company, in the past. I’ve chalked it up to wear and tear due to sun-par quality with Apples anodizing process. Probably also cut corners on that too to save money just to maximize their quarterly revenue. Should be of no surprise to anyone. But then again, the Apple-Heads are going to vehemently disagree because fanboys.

I hate these "as you all know" nonsense posts. Any other gross generalizations?

Speak for yourself. I don't "know" anything of the sort. Never lost a square millimeter of paint.
I don’t believe anyone care about what you feel about posts like you described. The person is experiencing an issue with the device and wishes to share with other users with the same device. Denying one’s experience because you never exprime what they have, doesn’t make their point any less invalid. I too share chipping on my phone and I’ve babied by phone since the day I procured it.

I've had every iPhone since the iPhone 4S and I've never had issues with chipping. Unless I've dropped them on concrete, but that's a different story.

If OP is experiencing an issue and wants to share that's fine. Why not state that a different way though? The word choice OP made assumes everyone, not just OP.

I got iPhone 15 Pro without a case because, yknow, TiTaNiUM! - it’s chipped like a mf. This is a real thing. I have AppleCare+ so it’s no big deal, but ny 13 Pro didn’t look like this after a month. Definite decline

"iPhone 12/13/14/15"? Oh, you mean iPhone 11s/11ss/11sss/11ssss.

If they have the same problem, it's because they are basically the same design. Tim Cook likes to do that to save money on R&D in order to maximize profits.

I don’t use a case, not since my 4S, but I do run a screen protector due to the soft lense, never had any paint chip, as far as I can tell on the 13 and above isn’t it DLC coated?

Imo, Apple can survive indefinitely as long as their fanboys are strong and resolute. Literally no other company on the planet can enjoy this privileged status.

Looked at the display models when I picked up my phone from the store. Outside of fingerprints, I saw no chips on the ones I looked at.
The iPhone 15 has just been released, so there are less

My word choice was probably poor, I'm not a native English speaker. Should rephrase to, "As some of you might be aware". I've seen most of the 12/13/14s chipping in stores, especially at the camera part. The 15 is relatively new, so there are obviously much less, but wait for a couple of months. This issue has been covered many times with lots of complaints. There must have been a change in the process how apple colors the aluminium.

If you only consider the complaints online in forums and videos, you might argue that those are only single cases. But seeing that all those models have been chipped (and not only a few of them, literally half of them) after a while in Apple Stores/authorized sellers (at least the ones where I live), I'm confident to gross generalize that the issue is real.

Trade off : I buy the natural / raw hues to avoid this very issue. I did have the fantastic jet black 7+ but it went into a case on day0 😂…

Any coating can and does chip/peel, even fancy watches with the PVD (sp?) can chip/fake/peel if the angle of the attacking surface is just right.

With the raw SS banding, at least one can sand/buff & clear coat (optional) the area IF it really bothers you…

Never used a case and never had any chipping. I definitely don’t know about this „problem“.

View attachment 2308158 My purple 14 PM is the only iPhone I’ve ever had this problem with. It got a lot of chips even when it had a case on, just from dust trapped underneath I guess? I usually baby my iPhones but I gave up on that one, the edges had hundreds of little bits of color missing. Not even scratches, they kind of look like pock marks

edit: Photo added. All the little dots are missing color, probably half happened while it was in a tpu case. It’s never in a purse, or pocket with anything else keys etc
You’re right about dirt between the phone and case being responsible for this. But they aren’t chips. They are scratches that happen when culminating dirt is trapped at practically the same spot and moves ever so slightly, rubbing away and through the „paint“. Something very common to notice years ago when so many people put their iPhone 5-6s in a case and never bothered to clean it, then when they wanted to replace their phones they took off the case for the first time and noticed the back and sides where littered with silver spots.
Clean your case every other day (which you should do regardless) and you’re fine.

To say the 15 is the same as the 11 is just as lazy as you claim Tim Cook, who has nothing to do with product design, to be.
