It’s always a pleasure to see another 6S in perfect condition. Most of them I saw out in the wild back when they were bring phased out in 2018/19 looked like they had been used to hammer nails into wooden blocks with all the scrapes & dents on them. I was always taught to look after my belongings which is why all the electronics I own never appear to age or become worn.
6S was definitely one of my favorite phones that I've ever used. I was going to sell it when I bought the X in 2017 but I couldn't part with it. Here's a pic of my iPod 5.5 video classic that I still use to this day.. Taking care of your belongings has its benefits!

My 7 years old iPhone 7 (silver) is also still perfectly fine. You do realize that silver is the natural color of aluminium right? So you can't compare it to an iphone that was anodized with blue, for example. I also don't think that the issue only exist in single devices. Checking the phones in the Apple stores (especially the older models that have been there for 1+ years) I can see chipping on a significant number of them, especially around the camera lenses.

If you use a case and also undergo monthly maintenance no cosmetic damage should occur to your phone. If you do not use a case, pick Silver as your colour of choice otherwise chipping will be almost unavoidable. The same is true today as it was back in the iPhone 7 days.

Apples silver aluminum phones are anodized too. The only color that has no coating is Stainless Steel devices such as the SS watch and X-14Pros/ProMax.. Chips/scratches are still visible on silver anodized devices, they just aren't as noticeable...

Assuming what you are saying is true, I must say after closely checking my iPhone 7 in silver has not a single scratch & chipping on its body, except for the display and apple logo on the back (micro scratches), and that after 7 years. So I can only assume that something changed in the anodizing process Apple is using for their newer phones, likely that they are using some cost effective procedure that also affected quality. For a 1000+$ device not acceptable.

Paint shouldn’t chip under normal wear and tear. Now the question becomes what is normal?? And no 2 people are going to tell you the same thing
If you want protection or your OCD then put it in a case and solve the problem

View attachment 2308158 My purple 14 PM is the only iPhone I’ve ever had this problem with. It got a lot of chips even when it had a case on, just from dust trapped underneath I guess? I usually baby my iPhones but I gave up on that one, the edges had hundreds of little bits of color missing. Not even scratches, they kind of look like pock marks

edit: Photo added. All the little dots are missing color, probably half happened while it was in a tpu case. It’s never in a purse, or pocket with anything else keys etc
Sweet baby Jesus 🧐

iPhone 6 had shocking problems with the aluminium and coating, on both I had. It didn't agree with humid climates they suggested. I've always bought metallic finishes since. My partner's non Apple laptops and phones that were black all lost paint/coating.
Still have my iPhone 6S Plus, anodized aluminum held/holds up pretty well as I still use it today despite having a 11 Pro Max IMG_4412.jpeg

So has the Gold on my original 5S and my original SE Rose Gold. Never had any issues with the coating ever. My 11 Pro Max is indistinguishable from new. Perfect condition going on the 5th year, so I’m at a loss for what’s going on with Chip Gate.

iPhone 6. Never used outside a case. Pitted like crazy. Hadn't inspected it for some time and it's worse than I remember and all the metal now has a patina.

For comparison: an iPhone 6 used for 3 years in Asia (bottom) vs an iPhone SE 2 used for 2 1/2 years in Europe and 1/2 a year in Asia (top). Humidity was blamed when I asked.

I bought my iPhone 12 on release, and it’s been in an Apple leather case almost since day 1. I look after anything I own to the best I can, but my 12 has the below damage to its paintwork and it drives me mad. It’s never out of the case, so the only thing I can think is that maybe sand from our occasional beach trips gets in the case and sits there rubbing away at it until I remember to check.
That looks like sandpaper damage..lol. Or it has a part-time job as a hockey puck. I would be absolutely furious. I had a weird scratch on the back of my 2020 12.9 IPP and it drove me mad as it has always remained in a case. I believed it to be the cases fault. So with my current 2 iPads (M1 11 in & 12.9), I add protective cloths to the rear of the iPads prior to inserting into cases.

Below is my oldest iPhone, the 6S, which I purchased new in March 2016. It had a battery replacement by Apple a few weeks ago and is still used daily as a secondary device after using it for 2 solid years as my daily driver.

There is barely a mark on it.

It’s really mind boggling to me that some people are unable to keep their NEW phones looking like this.

I mean, don’t throw your phone about & treat it like trash… it’s not rocket science.

Superb. How these products deserve to be treated. Kudos!

I’ve not seen this problem. I have had my iPhone 13 for 10 months now and it looks as good as new. I have used the 6S, SE, 8, 12 Mini also previously as daily drivers and have not noticed any problems with cosmetic paint chipping.

Sounds like it’s user error with individuals being rough with their devices or dropping them accidentally on hard surfaces, perhaps?
Agreed. Bought my 11 pro max launch day and have no experience with Chip Gate! And yes that is a camera lens protector..lol

I've been super careful with my new black titanium 15 Pro, keeping it in a case (Caudabe Sheath and Ringke Oynx). Every time I swapped cases, I meticulously wiped it down with a very soft microfibre cloth and (don't laugh) wore those white cotton jewellery gloves you sometimes see in fancy unboxing videos to avoid any fingerprints during the process of the case swapping. I made sure to inspect and wipe the interior of the cases too, to ensure there was no dust inside them before putting them on the phone.

Well... On my most recent case swap a couple of days ago, you can imagine my horror when I saw a shiny silver nick on the frame/antenna band at the bottom right of the phone. When looking at the phone head-on, without a case, it now looks like there is a white speck of dust on the edge. I can only assume a rogue piece of hard dust or grit somehow snuck its way in there.

I've only had it for 4 weeks now. I usually keep my phones pristine for well over a year before seeing the first sign of damage.

Gutted.

Well done in keeping your 11PM in perfect condition for so long. I plan on getting a battery replacement late next year on my 13 and keeping it as my daily driver. I hope it looks as good as your 11PM when it’s the same age!

Your 5S, 6S & SE look gorgeous too. I tend to just keep my older phones as collectibles as they are no longer worth much when I replace them.

That’s a shame. It’s just a freak occurrence, tbh. It happened to me also with my iPhone 8. The phone is in pristine condition minus one tiny chip near the bottom left speaker. It’s so minor that it never really bothered me though but it shows that minor cosmetic damage can happen even if you’re doing everything right. Don’t worry, I’m sure it’ll be the only damage you sustain on your phone.
