I will be looking at the mini and the pro, and will make the decision based on features [or what is missing on the mini]

It wont be about budget but what suits me best.
If the mini has the same specs as the pro, it will be an insta buy.

Lidar & AR is probably going to be the deal breaker for me.

I'm curious, just what exactly would the iPhone 12 release have to have to make you simply go out, and lay down the cash? (or payment plan). What over your current phone is the deciding factor?
Nothing in particular... I update to a new phone when the current one is not reasonably sufficient to what I am doing with it. Not by a calendar.

currently have a X and 11 between my partner and I (We swap frequntly). He is getting the new pro max regardless I think. I think I am going to stay with the 11 unless Apple offers the following on the non pro 6.1:
- Must have: Thinner bezels, 11 is so chonky
- Must have: New Design
- Must have: Blue or purple color
- Must have: OLED AND Higher pixel count
- Must have: Better battery than the 11. I get down to 15 percent when I get home from work with the 11, charge midday on the X.
- Instant buy: Touch ID in power button. I know this is just rumors, and no solid source has confirmed it, but I would love this.
- Dont care: 120 Hz, smaller notch (itd be nice, but idc), faster cpu, better cameras, reverse wireless charging.

Apple will have to do a lot to make me care about this release tbh.

I used to skip years but lately it's been more regular. I'm undecided on whether to move on from 11 Pro Max to 12 Pro 6.1" this year - nothing killer expected, but I have the money ready & am attracted by;

- iPhone 4 / iPad Pro straight side styling

- 5G (already available in my city)

- moving down a size - 11 Pro Max too big & heavy now, I preferred X in hindsight

- resell price on eBay has held up surprisingly well

Yup. My struggle too!
I’m trying not to, but I do have some excellent trade-ins, I’m still mulling it over...

It’s just unacceptable for a $1300/$1500 (in Canada) flagship phone to not have this feature, or at least even 90HZ. Definitely not giving Apple another $1500 just for flat edges and 5G.

I get a new phone every year, but this is what would improve my experience the most now with face masks. Entering my passcode to unlock my phone when I’m out sucks so bad. If they have it in the new iPad air, I see very little reason they wouldn’t include it in this year’s iPhones.

3 years cycle --> A lot of good improvements from iPhone X.

Key improvements:
  1. Better camera - specially for night shots
  2. more RAM and faster processor
  3. 5G
These are enough reasons to upgrade from my iPhone X to a 12 Pro Max.

Nice to have:
  1. 120Hz (not a show stopper)
  2. Touch ID (to help with face masks and also authenticate payments on POS machines)
  3. USB-C (just to keep consistency with all other devices I have - one cable for all)
  4. LiDAR (don't really care but nice to use here and there)

USB C.

That's pretty much what I'm waiting for right now. Any extra camera features/lenses/work tends to get me and my wife to spring for a new iPhone as well. But USB C would be huge for me. Everything else is not a big concern, helps we have the last generation.

I have the XS Max and always upgrade every year but skipped the 11 Pro Max, so this year I’m upgrading even if all of the specs that are rumored, that won’t change my mind.

I am exactly like you. I have the XS Max (in Gold like yours too) and I also upgrade every year with 1UP / Apple. I also skipped the 11 Pro Max, so like you, I am upgrading to iPhone 12 Pro Max, no matter what!

THE deciding factor for me to sign up for a plan: the 5.4-inch form factor and size.

The fact that it's non-Pro sets it in concrete, after two years with the highly priced XS and not getting much benefit from that large wad of 'Pro' money.

The 5.4's OLED, camera night mode and the modern design in a compact form factor (couldn't bring myself to accept the meh 2014 shell of the 2020 SE) are the only other drawcards. Lightning vs USB-C and 5G don't matter much.

The fact that it will mostly have a XS-to-11 kind of spec level, which I'm very happy with, speaks of the merits of saving piles of money in the (upper) midrange sweet spot.

This will be a workhorse that I will have for several years. With a battery replacement or two.

I also have an XS, and I have to agree. There's just not enough going on with these phones to justify a $1000+ price. I'll be sticking with the regular models going forward.

This time around I'll be going for the 6.1" iPhone 12.

rumours are the pro max is what will get all the latest tech....pro model will be left behind so will not be worth it but the mini and 6.1 non pro will be far better value i would say

the mini and 6.1 non pro will still get a lot of the camera improvements so for me that will be far better value than spending 1100 o plus on the pro models.

This is also my concern

120hz, no notch, fingerprint sensor. So I bought the fold 2 instead.
I played with the fold 2 at Best Buy for 15 minutes. It’s cool. It’s neat. It’s innovative. But not for 2k. No way, no how. the crease down the middle in person wasn’t a big deal but Im skeptical how bad the crease will age. it’s thick when you fold it so I don’t know how practical it is for pockets. The note 20 ultra was sitting right next to it for 1299$. I’d buy that before I bought the fold. P.s the camera bumps, especially on the ultra, is comical. No way you can go caseless on either one

Funny reason:
I´m superstitious and normally update every 2 years. Bought 11pro last year and didn´t think of 11+2=13!
So I have to go for the 12pro to not running around two years with a 13pro.
So happy that the time of ios13 is over since a few weeks.

True. But iOS 13.7 is the final iteration and most polished. I’m still on it and not budging until they work out all the kinks of iOS 14 to my satisfaction

What over your current phone is the deciding factor?

I think I've become addicted to the 6.1" screen size, but not to the resulting phone size (iPhone 11). If the bezels are significantly slimmer I may go for the 12. I would also welcome the disappearance of the slim plastic bezel that surrounds the screen and lower screen manufacturing variance / better screen uniformity.
Given how pointlessly thick some cases have to be to have the phone level on a table because of the camera hump, I'd welcome a lower camera hump / body thickness ratio, either by increasing the body's size or lowering the hump thickness.
A Face ID that works at increased angles would be a huge plus as well.

Must Not Have notch.
Must Not Have excess weight.
Must Have beautiful design & colors.
Must Have small form factor like 5.4 inch.
