I was referring to the gap seen the pictures of the OP. What do you think…issue or non-issue?
Non issue. I had the exact same kind of gap but around the right side. Very hard to find a phone that doesn’t have one. My iPhone 11 had a small little gap not perceivable to the human eye but a piece of paper did fit in.

Even if you can see the metal underneath it like in the pictures?

Every phone will have one. Some will be easily visible while with some you will have to fit in a thin paper to find one. They can be all around the chassis.

I think it is tolerance and it is just not precisely manufactured.
Just annoying.

Any idea what they are for? Replacing the screen?
Some say it is required for the expansion and contraction of the materials. However I believe that it must be hard to properly align the screen with the chassis as they have to produce millions of phones. It does not affect water resistance tho.

This was my guess as well. It would be a very tight fit if there was no gap, and i’m sure at some point glass will shatter. I guess having a minimal gap is good incase if you were to drop the phone at least it would absorb some of the impact. (Just my guess).

So you‘re talking about the gap in the pictures of the op where you can see a little bit of metal underneath…right?

Of course they say it is within the manufacturing tolerance otherwise they has to replace 20million iphones :D
I don’t really think it’s a manufacturing defect. It’s happening for the 4th time in a row. Apple would have fixed it by now had it been a defect. Almost 90% of the phones have a gap so by your logic all of em are defective. It started becoming noticeable with the 12 due to the new flat edge design.

I think we are talking about different gaps. There is antishock gap between the frame and the glass, in every Iphone 13. Its there to avoid the glass from breaking when you drop the phone. The gap that you can test with the paper for example but its not the same gap that we see in these pictures. That earpiece gap looks not normal to me but many 13's seems to have it anyway. (Sorry for my bad english).

So you think it’s going to effect the waterproofing?
There's no way to test water resistance unless you actually stick it under water. This goes for any iPhone that has a water resistance rating... That's why Apple lists water resistance not covered under warranty on their terms/conditions(sucks as mechanical watches are covered when in warranty period). Apple doesn't test every single phone before packaging them, they take random units and test them so it's a given units will make it through that aren't meeting the rating.. That's why I wouldn't try to submerse my phone without AppleCare+ so if it does F up the phone they'll replace it regardless..

Well I’d not trust the water seal. It tends to get less sticky as time passes, or if the phone is submersed in salt water it might completely get damaged. However, the gap won’t affect the the waterproofing due to the seal being under that gap (you’ll understand if you see any teardown vid).
