So let me get right...

The non-Pro, standard iPhone 14, if the rumours are all to be believed:

  • Will look near enough identical
  • Still have the same notch as the 13
  • Be the same size and have the same size screen
  • Have a variant of the A15 chip (same as the 13)
  • Won't have pro-motion
  • Have a slightly better camera and battery life
All of this and Apple will likely charge you an extra $100-$200 above the current 13 prices for the pleasure.

Honestly, Apple should be ashamed if all this is true. What has happened to this company? One that prided itself on innovation and offering new and exciting products is now happy to put out lacklustre devices like this.

Should have at least had the pill-shaped cutout and pro-motion. 120hz displays have been around for years now, and in 2022 Apple is still going to be selling a (likely) $800+ phone with a 60hz display.

I just hope when they reveal the new devices in September that they have a hidden surprise or two for the non-Pro models, and not just some trivial software update that won't be available at launch or slightly deeper shade of red as a colour option.

Pretty common to get trickle down tech though. If it makes you feel better I’m sure the new Pro models will get a price increase ha.
This year might actually be different though. With the costs of living/economy at all time highs around the world and potential terrible iPhone 14 update even the die hard fans might give pause if they raise the price for nothing more than because everyone else is doing it.

Lackluster does not accurately describe what you think of the next iPhone model. What it means is, if a consumer is upgrading from a five year old iPhone to the next generation/latest iPhone model, that doesn’t make it lackluster, That would be a significant upgrade. If somebody were to upgrade every year, they probably wouldn’t take time to appreciate all the features the iPhone has to offer.

Honestly, the regular iPhone 14 only exists to keep the price up. Especially the new "iPhone 14 Max" They could easily keep selling the iPhone 13 as the "entry model" with a price drop but then they would not be able to further increase the price of the "Pro" model, as they need something in between or for upselling purposes.

I personally miss the days when you could simply pick between last years model on a discount or the latest model with two screen sizes (not models).

Yes, there are people that always argue like "but not everyone needs all the features of the high end device" ok but that shouldn't matter. In the past there was "one price fits it all" so to say

two words to explain that : tim cook

I think we're going to have to get used to seeing very very slow incremental updates to technology, not the generational leaps ahead we once saw.

I realise this place is a rumour site first and foremost, but people are whipped into a frenzy by the so-called 'leaks' from 'reputable insiders' regarding just-around-the-corner tech which will change our lives, and when the real announcements finally come and they're spectacularly lamer, the disappointment on this forum is tangible.

Why does everyone blame Tim Cook for literally everything ha. It’s so exhausting and the same people who blame the US President for everything bad as well.

There’s more players involved such as share holders, board members, etc that determine these things. Tim Cook doesn’t wake up with a great idea or bad idea and probably does a lot less than you think.

I can think of two other words that better fit this 'problem': Mature technology.

Cell phone tech is a mature technology. We aren't going to get the leaps and bounds year to year any more. Anyone expecting more blood from the same rock each year has unrealistic expectations.

And some out there expect this but want to hold on to their headphone jack!

In any case, Apple is focused on getting people on older phones to upgrade. If you've got an iPhone 7 or an iPhone X, this is an upgrade. It's not targeted to the people on the bleeding edge of upgrading anymore.

Tbh every iPhone update's been lackluster, but then again I don't really care about phones anyhow lol.

The only way I'd get excited for a new iPhone would be if they

A. Added sideloading
B. Brought the headphone jack back
C. Ditched lightning and added a USB-C port
D. All of the above

ive talked about this last month
The bottom line is:
13 is almost identical to iphone 14 but the starting price probably will stay the same(instead of lower it by 100 since they will remove the 13 lineup) but this will allow Apple to charge you the same for 1 year old tech and more for the Pro models, why? because of the 14 max and the difference in price that the Pro must have compared to the normal
- iphone 14 $799
- iphone 14 Max $899
- iphone 14 pro $1099
- iphone 14 proM $1199

People should not vote for this with their wallets and chose the iphone 13 that will be cheaper with the 90% same specs as the 14
If the 14 will sale very well, then Apple will do this a common thing, charge you the same for almost no upgrades and like we all know, this will become a trend and the others will copy cat this marketing/profit BS in the future

Rght... and the iphone 12 has 80% of the same specs as the iphone 14. The iphone 11 has 60% of the same specs as the iphone 14. So what is the point? My still working 9 year old iphone 5s has 40% of the same specs as the iphone 14.

If I were to get the iphone 14, I would get the biggest screen and 256 gig. I promise you, I won't think it's lackluster. YMMV. And I do agree, each of us has to evaluate our positions of form, function and price and vote with our dollars accordingly.

like you said...you answered to your own question
60% became 80% and the 80 is now 95% ...still voting with this the 95% in the future will be 100%
I dont really care for me personally...but it will become viral in the future where even the pro will get the same phones but with the same price.
But my answer was for the OP

Sideloading won't happen unless governments force it. It's too much of a security risk for Apple to take. You'll have to stick with android for that.

The headphone jack is dead. It's just like CD/DVD and floppy drives before that on computers. It's kept on low end android phones because they realize if you're buying a $50 phone you might not want to spend more on wireless headphones. I suspect as $10 bluetooth headphones become more popular it's going to go away on those phones as well.

USB-C is coming with the next iPhone. I suspect the Pro will have Thunderbolt but who knows

exactly
i still remember even now how furious people were with no more optical drive, because of the music quality and so on...and 10 years now, nobody is talking about it, the world moved on and so will happen with the headphone jack...5 years from now

Apple will never be ashamed of charging people more money for more of the same thing... :D Remember the iPad mini 3, which was just an iPad mini 2 with TouchID?

The iPhone 14 won't be the star of the show. It will be the iPhone 14 Max, a largest screen iPhone for less than $1000. And I bet it will sell like hotcakes, akin to the still-best-selling-ever iPhone 6/6Plus. Consumers will see a large iPhone for less than the Pro Max price. Instant buy.

While a sharp-eyed consumer will see why they should be paying $799 for the iPhone 14 over the "presumably" $699 iPhone 13, any other consumers will simply see the iPhone 14 Max for $899 instead of $1199 of the 14 Pro Max.

For many people, screen size is a huge factor in buying decision. Just like TVs. The largest for the best dollar tends to win out, regardless of the spec.

Everything you just said was so blatantly false. The headphone jack will never die because wired will always be superior over wireless due to having a solid connection, something wireless can never have. It’s why wifi will never “kill” ethernet either

Wireless has so many issues, from audio latency, to digital compression (which is why Airpods Max doesn’t have lossless support) and the biggest issue of wireless mics being absolutely terrible. Example:

And another factor: Bluetooth headphones have a finite battery before they just stop working altogether. Wired headphones or wireless headphones with a wired mode can recieve analog power from the headphone jack so even when the batteries die they still work and produce amazing sound, while your $200 AirPods go straight into the landfill. It’s why vintage headphones from the 1970s still work and produce amazing sound when plugged into a headphone jack.

This is why the headphone jack isn’t dead and why it needs to come back. We gave wireless a try, now it’s time to go back to practicality, just like how the Macbook Pro brought its legacy ports back.

The standard iPhone 14 will just be an iPhone 13S. Did people complain as much when there were the S installments of the iPhone? What's the point again? Just don't upgrade, people coming from a X or XS or beyond will take the 14. No big deal in my opinion. More than that, I would love to see the S versions again. But in the name, not only in the interiors. Would show that we don't need higher & higher every year.

I don’t disagree what with you’re saying but the 3.5mm jack isn’t coming back on iPhones so you will just have to get over it. You can always use wired via lightning cable which is what I do as I don’t particularly like wireless earphones.

If I were like my friend and was working with a dying iPhone 6S, this would be a great upgrade.

Me? I have a 12 Pro Max and I'm guessing I might upgrade next year if we get USB-C and a periscope zoom module - and maybe even under-screen biometrics to get rid of the notch for Face ID or to return Touch ID.

You can have that defeatist attitude. I'm still gonna bully Apple until I get my headphone jack back, just like we bullied them to put magsafe and the HDMI back on the Macbook Pro

Hahah, good luck with that… hate to say it but nobody is bullying a monolith like Apple. I would rather not waste my time petitioning for something that clearly isn’t coming back. Even Samsung, who berated Apple for their design choice, has taken up the removal of the 3.5mm headphone jack in a massively hypocritical move. If you want wired, use the earphones provided with your iPhone which has a lightning connector on it.
