Apple tend to discontinue the Pro and Pro Max iphones every year. A customer going into an Apple store will only see the 14 Pro Max, which might retail for $1200 base, and the 14 Max for $900. The 14 Max will surely a huge seller. Hunting for a 13 Pro Max (in the color and storage size that you want) when the 14 series are released might be hit n miss.

In fairness most who are buying older iPhones tend to buy via online. Music magpie here in UK is very popular

I'm currently on the 12, and considered upgrading to the 14. Though, hearing about them possibly putting the 13 chips in the regular 14 has put me off. As well as the lack of a USB-C port. I'll wait another year, the 12 still functions perfectly after all.

iPhone -X- rumors suggest the most lackluster update ever...

...is the same post we see nearly every single year.

What exactly more are you expecting a cell phone to do? We're still a ways off from having tricoder-like devices.

But even still, you have the equivalent of a supercomputer four times faster than the beast that was crunching away at Livermore Labs twenty years ago - IN YOUR POCKET. Do you not, for even a moment, appreciate how wild and insane that is?

I guess some folks are just never satisfied, eh?

I think a lot of the time it’s the Samsungs and Google’s of this world that manage to squeeze some form of space zoom 100x camera in to their device that makes some apple folk wish the apple lenses could compete to some degree.

I’ve yet to decide which direction I go from my 12. My wife will adopt this one to replace her aging 8. I will go back to my old note 9 for a few months and save up some money before the Apple announcement unless it drives me up the wall to go and get a 13 lol.

Granted yes. The Samsung can take a good picture but put moving subjects in play and it’s a different story the majority of scenarios. It has its weak points much like the apple hardware does too of course. It’s just it’s easy to think Apple are not innovative because the gains are not truly visible with a lense labelled 108mp.

I don’t expect the price to come down, although I am hopeful. I think the 13 Pro will be attractive to many of us upgrading from a standard iPhone 12 or those with 11’s. There is bound to be some good deals come September and not to mention the devices flooding the secondhand market. The iPhone 14 isn’t looking that attractive from the rumours unless a person wants a max size phone for 900 quid.

I’ve noticed that too. The phone price difference is £200 but identical contracts work out £300-400 more over the period. It’s why I never opt for the Pro usually.
Yeah I’m looking to upgrade from my 12 this year. If I can find a good deal on the 13 pro come autumn that may be what I go for. The rumoured 14 doesn’t interest me at all, and the 14 pro sounds intriguing but will probably be very expensive

I’ve been struggling with a Samsung S20 ultra for 1 year. I made a mistake not getting an iPhone. So yeah, when I buy a iPhone Pro Max it’s going to be a big jump for me. Last iPhone I had was, uh the first one.

2 computer purchases a year are normal for me; a cell phone once every 5 years or so. Simply not going to purchase every iteration of the iPhone, nor is there a need for me to. The always on display is an important feature for me as I’m going to use it to time my dialysis treatments - and it hel-s i. Sterility/cleanliness for me to not have to touch my filthy phone during said treatment.

I find voice dictation/translation on the Samsung rather kludgy and close to useless

If Apple makes a Home[od w/a screen I’m all in - I’d use my phone to cast videos to the Homepod during dialysis.

OP - lacklustre is a personal opinion. My sister is thrilled that I’m giving her the Samsung for free - valuation is differential.

If 14 has
Same cpu A15
Same refresh rate 60hz only
Same size notch
Same rear and front camera hardware
Same looking except camera location

Basically everything is the same except the name becomes 14, new rear camera location, one more year ios support comparing to 13. Some camera software updrade.

10% more expensive then current 13 price.

Are you going to buy 14?

Why not? I don’t think Apple will release the same iPhone twice so I think we shouldn’t get too carried away with the leaks. After Apple throwing a curve ball last year about the AW Series 7, everything is still written in pencil until the products are announced.

My theory, which I have no basis on, is that the price of the regular 14 will drop to the price of the 13 mini currently and the 14 Max will be priced the same as the regular 13. I expect some improvements in the camera department too, at least on the computational aspects of it.

This thread seems like having some upgrades, mine almost has no upgrades.
The A15 in the base 14 will be the same as the 13 Pro version with additional RAM.

You’re right though, the 14 is essentially the same phone as the 13 and the minor upgrades are insufficient to even consider it a 13S.

I doubt there would be more ram

So let me get right...

The non-Pro, standard iPhone 14, if the rumours are all to be believed:

  • Will look near enough identical
  • Still have the same notch as the 13
  • Be the same size and have the same size screen
  • Have a variant of the A15 chip (same as the 13)
  • Won't have pro-motion
  • Have a slightly better camera and battery life
All of this and Apple will likely charge you an extra $100-$200 above the current 13 prices for the pleasure.

Honestly, Apple should be ashamed if all this is true. What has happened to this company? One that prided itself on innovation and offering new and exciting products is now happy to put out lacklustre devices like this.

Should have at least had the pill-shaped cutout and pro-motion. 120hz displays have been around for years now, and in 2022 Apple is still going to be selling a (likely) $800+ phone with a 60hz display.

I just hope when they reveal the new devices in September that they have a hidden surprise or two for the non-Pro models, and not just some trivial software update that won't be available at launch or slightly deeper shade of red as a colour option.

The latest rumor showing the real upgrades will be much less than you discirbe.

Apple will never be ashamed of charging people more money for more of the same thing... :D Remember the iPad mini 3, which was just an iPad mini 2 with TouchID?

The iPhone 14 won't be the star of the show. It will be the iPhone 14 Max, a largest screen iPhone for less than $1000. And I bet it will sell like hotcakes, akin to the still-best-selling-ever iPhone 6/6Plus. Consumers will see a large iPhone for less than the Pro Max price. Instant buy.

While a sharp-eyed consumer will see why they should be paying $799 for the iPhone 14 over the "presumably" $699 iPhone 13, any other consumers will simply see the iPhone 14 Max for $899 instead of $1199 of the 14 Pro Max.

For many people, screen size is a huge factor in buying decision. Just like TVs. The largest for the best dollar tends to win out, regardless of the spec.

I doubt the non pro max can be sold well with such an expensive price while economics is bad. The only selling point is big screen with 13 hardware.

I just bought a refurb 12 mini directly from Apple. Saved a pretty penny and it will last me a few years. Battery life seems fine to me, I came from an iPhone 8 so anything is an improvement. Can’t imagine I will have buyers remorse in September.

Feel any different from a new phone?

Personally, this is a feature I will never use and really don't see the point of it......

It's a pointless feature in all fairness and all that will cause is a mega-thread on "0MGBBQ!!11! My iPhone now has burned in screens!!1!"

Apple doesn't WANT to make these terrible updates, but the chip shortage is forcing them too. And the way Wall Street works forces them to release a product no matter what or their stock price will tank. You honestly think Apple wants to make such lame updates?

Im going to upgrade, I think getting rid of the notch is awesome. To me the notch on the 13 series looks worse then the 12 series. What was the point of even changing it? They made narrower but deeper lol.
Coming from a 12 series or earlier I think will be a nice upgrade, I wish they would bring a mini pro.

The European Union says hi.
And it won't be long before the U.S. forces Apple to use USB-C over Lightning as well.

You really think the EU requiring Apple to be compliant by 2024 doesn't line up with something Apple is most likely going to do in 2023 and that's getting rid of the port all together? You're delusional if you think this wasn't something Apple had a say in and is letting the EU have a "W" which will end up being a phantom victory.
Why not? If Apple can use USB-C ports for the newest iPad models (being the iPad 9, the iPad Mini 6, the iPad Air 4 & 5 & the iPad Pro 3-5), then they could surely use USB-C for the newest iPhones in the near future, too. USB-C is standard everywhere.

This is really not surprising. Apple's iPhone upgrades have been quite incremental in the past few phone versions. The chips are powerful enough that you're really not getting much real benefit to upgrading beyond (a) artificially-limited new software features (many of which aren't really that life-changing) or (b) faster professional video editing—which, if you're doing that on a phone, you're probably such a niche group that you're an absolute bare minority.

This is all the more reason people need to stop unloading cash on Apple's newest phones because they really aren't worth it. Smartphones—everywhere, but particularly big manufacturers' top-end phones—are WAY overpriced, and people would be genuinely quite happy using last year's (or even 2 years ago's) model. People need to buy used devices more. It's better for the environment and far less wasteful of both money and limited resources.

As for why? Well, we exist in a society in shareholders own companies and pressure them to make the most possible profit which means that companies like Apple are pressured to make "something new" even if "new" isn't actually that much better. So they feel obligated to come out with new products every single year on a regular cycle. Another thing is that processor innovation and mobile tech has slowed down tremendously in the last few years. There just isn't a lot new happening. AR is probably the next "big" thing, but getting that to a point where it's so seamless and easy to use will take a while.

Price is irrelevant.

What consumers want are best-of-breed products from Apple, and I am confident they will deliver - as they deliver every year.
This mentality is exactly why Apple feels pressure to keep churning out new products: rampant consumerist-materialism has a strong grip on most wealthier societies and people are unhealthily obsessed with the latest and greatest instead of asking how they can make informed decisions that'll last them for years and years.

I'm using a 3 year old phone. It works really well. It does everything that I use it for super fast and just because other phones can do things faster or better, relatively, does not make my phone objectively bad in any way. I used a 2015 Mac until 2022. I am using a 2021 Mac now, but only because I'm anticipating it lasting me another 8+ years.

Buy used. Stop being obsessed with newness for its own sake. 99% of people actually have zero real need for the latest and greatest gadgets. And I say this as a tech nerd who enjoys the latest and greatest gadgets. I just…have some self control, I guess.

Price may be irrelevant to iPhone enthusiasts but we all know the majority of smartphone consumers are not enthusiasts.

Price is far from being irrelevant and is by far a driving factor in the popularity of certain iPhone models. If price didn’t matter, then more people would be buying the Pro and Pro Max every year.
