They are not iterative, they are outright new features. Unlike slight tweaks to the camera and a 2% increase in processor speed, which are not new features and are iterative
Anything related to "improving" is a iterative feature. The argument y'all have made is that Apple has not released anything "wow" enough and all upgrades are iterative. Guess what? Such a features mentioned are that, iterative.

That’s just arguing semantics

Not really. iPhones currently have a screen, buttons, wired and wireless charging, cameras front and back and more. Any improvement in any of those is an iterative improvement. A SCREEN ON THE BACK doesn’t currently exist, that would be new. Folding as well. A super cool camera would just be an iterative improvement to the current camera, still.

Honestly, it does feel like the non pro iPhones peaked in their comparative value with the 12 series. The 12 was really 90% of the 12 pro. Feels like the 13 pro was a huge step up vs the minor upgrade 13, and now the gap will get even bigger with the 14 pro.

I think I’d be ok with a much larger gap between the non pros and pros if the non pros were priced like genuine midrange phones, not flagships. And frankly a 2022 iPhone 14 with dual camera and 60hz is less value than many actual midrange phones. Either way, I think the marketing behind this is explained by the 14 max, apple is really banking on this phone being a big seller as the first “cheaper” max phone rather than the regular 14 being anything special.

Whether the performance gap is getting bigger between the standard iPhone and the Pro or not, the standard is still good enough for most users. The cost could come down on the standard devices though as these are slowly creeping towards that £1k price point. I think that will be the game changer to be honest and more people will start buying older or keeping devices much longer.

Yeah, I always did think the gap between the standard and pro seemed the smallest by far with the 12’s, and looks to be the largest with the 14 models

It was relatively small with the 13 and 13 Pro too in terms of normal use to be honest. Apple are ultimately building up to increasing this gap to try and tempt consumers into opting for the Pro model. However, there is one thing that is preventing this overall and that is cost. If the 14/14 Max is £799 and £899 this year with the Pro starting at £1099, the cost is already close to £1k and at this point I don’t think it’s particularly tempting to stretch further even if there is a better camera and all the other little bits a Pro comes with. There is a different market for each type of phone I think and the standard iPhone attracts a bigger segment because it’s cheaper and ‘good enough’. It’ll be interesting to see if this year we see a drop off in upgrades due to the economic crisis across the world.

The 12 or 13 will be enough for most people. If the rumours are true (big if) the 14 offers nothing significant over the 13 other than new ram and will be more expensive. The price won’t come down, especially in an inflationary economic climate.

Yeah very true. The pros always seem to be much more expensive on contract too compared to the standard models

It’s not arguing about my points of improvements, it’s fussing over the word iteratively
I'm not fuzzing against the word. Another user even pointed the fact same thing. I'll state it again, if you make any improvements to what is already there, it's an iterative update. Adding a whole new feature is what should be discussed. Rather, you giving ideas as to what you consider a whole new feature that adds to the wow factor.

I don’t expect the price to come down, although I am hopeful. I think the 13 Pro will be attractive to many of us upgrading from a standard iPhone 12 or those with 11’s. There is bound to be some good deals come September and not to mention the devices flooding the secondhand market. The iPhone 14 isn’t looking that attractive from the rumours unless a person wants a max size phone for 900 quid.

I’ve noticed that too. The phone price difference is £200 but identical contracts work out £300-400 more over the period. It’s why I never opt for the Pro usually.

I think generally the updates are pretty good aside from the return to the brick like so called "industrial" design that made a return with the 12 along with the increase in weight.
Really hoping apple rediscover curved edges soon again...

They did with MBPs and MBAs, so maybe it might come back this time around?

By that logic then no iPhones have had any new features since the original, if improvements to what’s already there don’t count

Pro motion and AOD are clearly new features

I can’t be bothered to argue anymore about this though

Actually you'd be wrong. Let's see:
  • GPS/GLONASS/Galileo? That was new. Original iPhone didn't have that
  • Wireless charging? New
  • Siri? New
  • Apple Silicone? New
  • Haptic feedback? new. Although it was removed

We all know the iPhone 14 will sell like hotcakes regardless, but I fail to see the logic in buying it over the iPhone 13. And if people are buying the 14 Max for the larger screen, why not just get the 13 Pro Max? You'll get a better build quality, extra camera and ProMotion.

My guess is that Apple may stop selling the iPhone 13 when the 14 goes on sale. The company isn’t run by idiots; I am sure the iPhone 14 will come with enough features to make it more desirable compared to the previous generation models.

You are also assuming that rumours of the iPhone 14 essentially sharing the same processor as the 13 means that both models will be supported just as long.

In reality, we simply won’t know until Apple decides to yank support for one or both.

Kinda of hard to top the best iPhone release in recent years (13 model). It hit on every note that the consumer wants out of an upgrade with their mobile device (better screen, battery life, camera upgrade etc).

I'm happy as a clam with my iPhone 13 pro max, it hopefully give me 5 - 6 solid years worth of updates.

People feel like they have to justify a phone every year instead of sticking to it every 2-3.

Apple tend to discontinue the Pro and Pro Max iphones every year. A customer going into an Apple store will only see the 14 Pro Max, which might retail for $1200 base, and the 14 Max for $900. The 14 Max will surely a huge seller. Hunting for a 13 Pro Max (in the color and storage size that you want) when the 14 series are released might be hit n miss.
