It's mature technology at this point, so changes are necessarily going to be incremental in most years going forward. No one is forcing anyone to upgrade.

What I wish, though, is that Apple would use the EU decision as an opportunity and would get USB-C into its phones ASAP. For me, that alone would be a worthwhile upgrade.
Phones becoming the next "wow" thing is a thing of the past. Right now, there isn't much you can add to them. Phones already provide experiences that weren't possible before. Furthermore, they can't offer what isn't there to benchmark, like a laptop.

Hence, we are now getting iterative upgrades.

wait for the iPhone with the 3nm chips.
after 2nm I think its all over. they can't shrink the chip further.

This thread seems misguided at best. Apple differentiates its phones with Pro models getting all the best features and the basic model. Its like going to the iPad forum and complaining about why the regular iPad doesn't have an M1 chip or why does the Pro get the XDR display. If one wants the best, they pay for it. if they feel its not worth it they don't buy it.

As for the base model 14, its getting a bigger screen which will see huge sales. Maybe a better camera and you have a home run for the masses. Sure the screen quality won't match the 14 Pro but remember those features come with $$$.

As for 14 Pro, it will be getting rid of the Notch, that is a huge and will make notch haters upgrade in droves.

Overall this will be a great year.

Any reliable rumors yet regarding what colors the iPhone 14 models will come in? Same as 13?
No major rumors. That’s usually the last thing to get leaked and even the color leaks are often revealed to be wrong at the announcement.

For me the one thing putting me off jumping from Google Pixel land (currently use a Pixel 5 for personal and Iphone SE2022 for work) is the weight of the iphone 13 pro.

I'm sure i read something the other week about the 14pro being constructed or partly constructed with a titanium alloy... this *could* lead to a significant weight reduction versus the 13pro/pro max right?
So there is hope for the 14pro for those of us who dont want to be forced to wear a belt with every pair of trousers/pants/shorts they own :)

knowing apple, we cant expect them to make more than one design change for single iteration :D so getting rid of notch is USP this year and Titanium for less weight is USP for 2023 models :D

So let me get right...

The non-Pro, standard iPhone 14, if the rumours are all to be believed:

  • Will look near enough identical
  • Still have the same notch as the 13
  • Be the same size and have the same size screen
  • Have a variant of the A15 chip (same as the 13)
  • Won't have pro-motion
  • Have a slightly better camera and battery life
All of this and Apple will likely charge you an extra $100-$200 above the current 13 prices for the pleasure.

Honestly, Apple should be ashamed if all this is true. What has happened to this company? One that prided itself on innovation and offering new and exciting products is now happy to put out lacklustre devices like this.

Should have at least had the pill-shaped cutout and pro-motion. 120hz displays have been around for years now, and in 2022 Apple is still going to be selling a (likely) $800+ phone with a 60hz display.

I just hope when they reveal the new devices in September that they have a hidden surprise or two for the non-Pro models, and not just some trivial software update that won't be available at launch or slightly deeper shade of red as a colour option.

Remember the time before Steve Jobs saved the company? This company is getting back to there but there is no Steve Jobs this time.

I guess the camera hardware will be almost exactly the same, nothing like bigger sensor for sure, just give you some software level improvement which there is no way to tell the improvement in real life.

I have stated previously, what else would you like to see in a phone? Go ahead, let's discuss your ideas on what should be done instead of just complaining.

Example: iPhone camera sensor is still smaller comparing to other main brands top phones.

@babyexercise is not Steve Jobs which is why he/she has no “wow” idea.
Not in the least. But the whole complain here is that each year the iPhone only gets improvements and no "wow" features. So, that poster mentioned, improving the camera by adding a better sensor.

That's not a "wow" feature, that's just a camera upgrade; hence, iterative improvement. You know what I'd consider a "wow" feature? A new battery technology to get more cycles per battery and longer battery life. Several technologies have been researched and yet the industry seems stuck on Li-X batteries.

You know what else would be "wow"? True wireless power transfer using electromagnetic waves. Not the current contact driven one. Research has been performed that allows said technology. Better yet, solar powered iPhone using under-display solar cells. That tech was discussed a few years ago.

Think outside the box people with realistic goals.

Thing is, by the time a technology is mature enough to be able to be reliably produced over 200 million times in year with a very small percentage of failures, it’s always going to be iterative, there are rarely “wow’s” at that scale. Folks will see some Android phones using esoteric new tech, but those manufacturers are only trying to sell 5 to 10 million in a year.

Apple appear to be considerably behind the curve when it comes to new technology and only jump in once said technology is mature, reliable and cheap enough to mass produce. It took them an age to introduce wireless charging as well as giving us a bezel-less screen. I don’t even think we will see a foldable iPhone until around 2024/25.

Those features you mentioned will come one day to Apple products, but I can assure you they’ll appear on Samsung products years before.

Some yes? All I doubt it. We’ve seen Apple jump out with some stuff without competitors even getting a scent until it was released.

64-bit
Retina

To name a few.

That's an iterative upgrade, not wow. Where is your "wow" idea?

Even my many years old 4k sony android phone still has better screen quality than 13 pro. 13 pro screen quality is “good enough” but still not that level yet. Not about 2k or 4k, just the picture quality in general.

A higher resolution screen? That's another iterative upgrade. That said, there is a rule when it comes to resolution and the iPhone, fulfills it with the current screen res.

I already said not about resolution, just pro screen quality is worse. The different is like basic iPad vs iPad Pro screen.

Any screen enhancements, like nits or just color gamut would not be "wow". Just iterative enhancements which defeat your argument. Sure, I'll agree that it's nice to have a better screen. However, if it increases the BOM and hence the overall price of the device I am fine with the current one as is or smaller upgrades.

It is already the most expensive phone in the world but the screen quality is worse than an Sony android phone many years ago which I used around $350 USD to buy from a retail shop (new not second hand). $350 was still profitable for Sony.

In other phones, they have to cheap out in other areas to get the awesome display. Are you willing to pay the markup of the newer screens?

Everything you just said was so blatantly false. The headphone jack will never die because wired will always be superior over wireless due to having a solid connection, something wireless can never have. It’s why wifi will never “kill” ethernet either

Wireless has so many issues, from audio latency, to digital compression (which is why Airpods Max doesn’t have lossless support) and the biggest issue of wireless mics being absolutely terrible. Example:

And another factor: Bluetooth headphones have a finite battery before they just stop working altogether. Wired headphones or wireless headphones with a wired mode can recieve analog power from the headphone jack so even when the batteries die they still work and produce amazing sound, while your $200 AirPods go straight into the landfill. It’s why vintage headphones from the 1970s still work and produce amazing sound when plugged into a headphone jack.

This is why the headphone jack isn’t dead and why it needs to come back. We gave wireless a try, now it’s time to go back to practicality, just like how the Macbook Pro brought its legacy ports back.

This is more like you want the headphone jack to come back, not that it actually is coming back. I think you're confusing your preferences and desires with the majority of people's needs. Clearly, lots of people are ok with the tradeoffs of wireless headphones or AirPods wouldn't be selling like hotcakes. The fact is iPhones without headphone jacks have been selling really well for years now.

Sony hardware is pretty good in general just the software part is really bad. I just want to point out the hardware of iPhone is still far from very good, Apple earning margin is very high.
