The rumor of the 16 Pro next year being 6.3 inches is very intriguing to me. I have a 12 Pro, and the size could just be a little wider (but not any longer) in my rather large hands. I had an 8 Plus and hated the extra size (for hands, gestures, pockets, biking), but I may get the 15 Pro Max anyway for the periscope lens. I will buy an unlocked version in case my wife wants it and then I can get the 16 Pro next year.

The ONLY reason I am probably going to buy the 15 Pro, rather than wait for the 16, is because I want the Satellite SOS feature, that came with the 14 (and I don't want to buy yesterday's phone).

Such a bummer… No SIM card tray, no buy. I guess I’ll have to either wait until I can buy them overseas or start officially looking for alternative. E-SIM is great but all the countries I work in are contract only for E-SIM. I just retuned from working for two months in the Philippine. My wife couldn‘t use her unlocked “US“ iPhone 14… No SIM Tray. Really messing with our company phones.
I understand the need for sim cards while traveling, but I’ve always wondered why other countries can’t easily supply e-sims to travelers. Seems like a simple solution.

Except it actually doesn’t because Apple didn’t engineer two different phones to take advantage of that space. The phones without a SIM card just have useless filler taking up the place where the SIM would go on the SIM-less versions.

Maybe one day in the future it will benefit us, but at the moment it doesn’t.

So it is only a question of time until it will benefit us.

This is definitely my favorite new feature. It’s always so exciting when Apple takes things away from us. I love those features the best.
Well I'm in France and wonder how on earth will I transfer my sim to a new phone ( Orange France )

You cannot make a profit without benefitting humanity. Unless you persuade people to buy your product or service - and they just won't do it if it doesn't benefit them - you won't make a cent. Try it!

The government will simply force you.

In fact, rent-seeking behaviour is exclusively possible through the government.

Anyway, off topic, I will not continue this.

Apple was probably going to switch to USB-C anyway, they did it with the laptops, iPads, even my Beats Fit Pro. There was no need for the EU bureaucracy to flex their muscles.
You can most definitely make a profit without benefitting humanity, with slavery being the most basic example.

The market doesn’t care about negative repercussions unless they hit the bottom line. And just because the direct customers don’t care about the repercussions doesn’t mean that said repercussions should be ignored.

Is the environment or the common good only worth thinking about if it improves profits?

Also, not sure you know what rent-seeking means.

Nothing exciting if I'm honest. Water resistance can't be relied on since it wears off over time.
The fewer the ingress points, the longer that IP will last. However, the argument that IP protection is not perfect, so I would rather have less of it seems odd to me. Finally, as soon as the SIM slot is gone from every iPhone, that space cane be repurposed. The more carriers see that iPhones from many territories have stopped having SIM slots, the faster they will adopt eSIM.
I'd rather have the SIM slot, at least until eSIMs are as easy to swap as physical.
eSIMs are easier to swap than physical ones. I can have multiple eSIMs stored in my device and all I need to do to swap among them is pick which ones I want to have active. That is much easier than having to carry a SIM wallet and a SIM tool to do it. Also, I can get an eSIM completely electronically, whereas I need to go into a store to get a real SIM.

The argument is that I'd rather have a tangible feature like SIM slot or charging port than have increased water resistance that I'll not notice and am discouraged from "using". It is a fair point the extra space could be used for something that is more tangible.

When I said swap I meant between two devices. eSIM is certainly capable of being easier but isn't in practice. Not to mention carriers here will charge you for it when physically it's free.

It's all a bit MEH! and they are increasing the price as well. What a joke!!
1. Titanium (who cares, really)
2. USB C - should have been done years ago.
3. Wifi 6E - why make a thing about this? Wifi 7 is what 2023 is all about and you are putting in some older tech!!
4. Action button - Assignable buttons are a good thing. But again, who cares? Most Android phones have done this for over 10 years.
5. e-sim - ok and?
6. More memory - ok
7. More repairable design - This I like actually.

Apple - if you save your marketing budget for 2023-2024 on this phone, don't bother with the launch event and put those costs back into reducing the cost of this device that will be welcome, because nothing here is worth a shout-out about and nothing here is especially worth a price increase.

that is actually a solid list of updates - my decision not to update this year is starting to become shaky

If this optical zoom thing turns out to be true and it's hidden behind the most expensive iPhone model, I am going to be extremely disappointed. Most time I rarely give Apple **** for the decisions they make, but this one, this is just a total money grab! They know how many of their users want this optical zoom feature, and so now they are going to hide it behind the Pro Max version, just to milk more money out of their customers.. Good times!!

For whatever reason Apple has kept the iPhone on slow lightning years after the iPad got USBC, it’s long past due. I’m sure we’ll all survive usbc.

Exactly. I don't get this argument that Apple hates USB-C and never intended to use it if it weren't for the evil, overbearing EU forcing them to do so. If that's the case, then why did they switch the iPad over to USB-C long before the EU forced their hand? It seems the iPad was switched over to allow the iPad more compatibility with USB devices that one might use with a laptop, i.e. making the iPad more like a computer. They also could've increased the transfer speeds of Lightning earlier, and didn't do so. They wanted to hang onto their proprietary connector for as long as they could, but ditching Lightning for USB-C in the iPad is to me evidence that this switchover was going to happen eventually.

If one were to buy the phone in a foreign market to keep the SIM slot - excluding cost, what other negative attributes can one expect? Will any other mainline feature be removed/disabled? If I were to continue to use my AT&T SIM card in the new phone, will AT&T not register it on the network, as when I bought a new SIMless phone and transferred the SIM to the new phone, within a week my SIM got "disabled" and had to visit the local AT&T shop and the clerk replaced it with a new card for some lame reason. Will I experience similar and this time will not get a new SIM and forced to use eSIM?

Will I be able to use both eSIM and SIM simultaneously or at least can through the OS enable one over the other?

Because I do not see why they are removing it from certain markets if folks were to travel to other markets where eSIM isn't a thing it seems to be a dumb idea. Apple is a global company, this isn't a "courageous" removal--and honestly i dont think the removal of the 3.5 mm adaptor is still a good one. I still much rather have a gold-plated copper wire transmitting audio than a wireless and laggy protocol. Especially when there is no first party Y-cable to charge and use the 3.5 to lightning adaptor that will forever sit in my junk drawer as I make way for the 3.5 to USB cable . . . .

Got a couple of questions about USBC that everyone is taking to be a no-brainer improvement...

1) Durability. My only long term experience was a 2016 15inch Macbook Pro. By the time I upgraded to a 16 inch M1max all of the USB ports were loose, some to the point where contact could be lost during regular usage. Was that just bad part selection for that model?

2) PITA factor in the darkness. Half of the time I'm plugging a lightning connector it's either dark or I'm not looking at what I'm doing. It seems to me that with a USBC connector the parts need to be more precisely aligned in order to mate. Is that annoying?
nobody got anything to say about this?

The US (sim free) versions of the iPhone to date have had a better modem (more 5G frequencies?) than the models sold in Europe. That might carry on going forward in order to KISS.

A hidden advantage I see of going 100% e-sim is that if you lose your phone you can get a new sim just by downloading (rather than having to wait for FEDEX to get it to you whereever you are in the world). That's even more of a big deal if you need a SIM in order to authenticate access to various accounts by SMS.

Surprisingly empty list. And they want to increase the price?
I'm not sure what massive hardware upgrades you could expect here. The fastest mobile processor, 2-3 years ahead of anything else out there. Titanium, the strongest and lightest material you can expect in a phone. A periscope lens, not the first of its kind but that's about as good as you can get. USB type C to kill Lightning forever. Has there ever even been a year that iPhone had this big of a hardware leap? Or any phone for that matter?

Imo lightning ports are more durable.

Imo, lightning ports are easier to insert by feel.

Can’t wait for the (what feels like) 3h pre recorded zoom call that the event has transformed into these days..
