An update on my issue - My specific problem was not overheating on video, charging, or other use cases, Only on phone calls, and it was persistent on Wifi, 5G, LTE .... any voice call. Last night I reset the network settings from the reset menu and then a restart. At least as of this AM, it seems to have resolved the issue. I've had a few test calls to my office landline of 15 minutes without any noticeable heat issue. We'll see if it reappears, as I previously thought a restart had resolved it.

For those with the issue on voice calls, try the reset. I'm on a 15P with AT&T

Going to try this now, as I am only experiencing this issue on phone calls as well. Will report back here after a few test scenarios.

I did this reset day one on att and for me, it did not resolve the issue entirely.

Has anyone installed 17.1 beta? Curious if it patches any of these heat related issues, I’d be willing to deal with beta bugs if I can make phone calls again.

im wondering if this is what's happening to mine. so far on 4 separate occasions while using my phone plugged in using CarPlay I have had a phone call cause the phone to freeze and crash out of CarPlay and the call about exactly 1:30 into the call. first 2 on Tuesday then the other 2 today. was using the lighting to usbc adaptor since my car doesn't have usbc

I did and immediately made a 20 minute phone call and watch streaming video after for 20 mins with no excessive heat surprisingly. I’ll keep checking over the next we days.

Nice! Keep us posted please as you continue testing

Unfortunately, it didn’t resolve the issue for me either. The first phone call I made was fine. I made another later in the day and the issue persisted.

I ended up having my carrier place a replacement order. Can’t afford to wait on a software fix (if that’s even possible).

Worth a shot, but it’s most likely a software issue as shown by the runaway home and Lock Screen usage, possibly try the 17.1 beta? Resolved the issue for another user.

Seems to also be inconsistent for me - some call as cool as expected and other warm up the phone - same location, same signal levels in Field Test, so maybe a software bug, Qualcom modem bug, or a bad chip.... I have

Update - problem returned and I went to the Apple Store Genius Bar. My passed the HW test and antenna test, but failed a software scan due to a corrupted file. Had to do a clean resent and start reloading everything manually. So far, four actual voice call all over 15 minutes and no heat related issues - keeping fingers crossed

Interesting about the software. I guess I’m going to need to reinstall. Did you at least sign into iCloud?

Yes, I signed in with my Apple ID, just didn’t do a restore. Same with my Google ID, so really it’s just reloading all the apps and redoing the layout. I say just as I’ve been working at it for hours using the apple configuration app to help.

I like to do this anyways with some releases. But I’ve got quite a few things that are paired to my phone these days, so it’ll be a hassle. I assume Apple will address it with an update since I many of us are having the issue, but may need to do the clean install if I can’t wait.

Probably a good practice, but a full OS point release may clean it up without the hassle. I couldn’t wait, I still have a lot of voice calls.

so the only fix we know is an erase and set up as new, I would at least need to sign into iCloud (non restore) can anyone confirm if a new setup with iCloud signed in works to resolve the phone getting hot and draining battery during a call?
So I have the eSIM already installed. Should I delete it restart device and configure new eSIM? Maybe this might work?

Do keep us posted !

So far all is good. A full day of calls and the phone never got even warm. My only caution is that I have not loaded Youtube back on the phone - no logic to it, except I've heard anecdotally that it has a few bugs with iOS 17 and figured why risk it.

Did you erase and reset or restore from DFU mode?

It was done by Apple, but it looked like it was done from DFU mode - they reloaded from a laptop diagnostic screen and it took longer than a normal erase
Sounds like they did a restore from iTunes, which I’m told does not delete the esim

Update from my end. I have not done a restore and did not update to 17.1 beta. Only previous things, WiFi calling, reset network settings and I changed wallpaper to iOS 17 default and turned off posters in the phone app. I made several calls today with no overheating, strange. I hope it stays this way, I’ll wait till ios17 gets an official update before turning posters back on.
