Hardly surprising given the Ti casing. Ti’s thermal conductivity is incredible, anyone into ultralight backpacking would know how difficult it is to hand hold a Ti pot used for boiling water. The Ti handles are untouchable without a towel or similar. Far less of an issue with stainless steel pots.

I continue to have no heat issues with my 1TB 15 Pro Max…my 1TB 14 Pro Max ran hotter in general. Unlike what I’ve been doing with new iPhones in the last 10 years or so, I did *not* restore this new 15 from a backup of the previous phone, just used iCloud to transfer passwords etc. I also have no apps from Meta installed.

There's no heat gate.

It's a new phone so while people are setting it up they test out all the new power features to the extreme. OS optimisations are still rolling out.

Same thing happens every year and not just with iPhones but computers also.

My Sandisk portable SSD gets hotter than my iPhone 15 Max.

But nobody went around saying Sandisk SSDs had a heat gate.

Even though the Sandisk SSD is not even a powerful device.

We live in the yearly cycle of clickbait and short term memories.

And some people are stupid enough to fall for it.
Actually I am quite surprised nobody complained about how hot MicroSD cards get when moving data via USB and how hot the Go-Pro batteries get after use.

I too think this has blown out of proportion.

I called Apple support to ask about why my 15 pro max vibration doesn't work in silent mode for text messages and my 14PM worked just fine with vibration in silent mode.... they have No answers yet supposedly someone else had the problem as well....
Glad I'm not the only one this was happening to. Thought it was going crazy when my phone was in my pocket this weekend and I was missing texts thinking "did it even vibrate?" Gotta be a software bug, I'd imagine

I'm hoping they fix it or more people reported it to them

Have had no issues with my ProMax but it's apparent some people are experiencing abnormal/excessive overheating. Hope this can be sorted out without gimping the performance of the SOC

Has it been established to only happen with certain apps, types of apps? Some apps may have issues with iOS 17 and need an update to fix that. Not always the phone's fault. Can be bad code, too.

I’m convinced this is more of a software issue than a hardware problem - a combination of iOS inefficiencies, third-party software, and the difference between how devices are restored or set up as new.

My 15 Pro actually runs cooler than my 13 mini did over the last few iOS 16 updates, and my wife reports her 15 Pro doesn’t get nearly as hot as her 13 Pro started getting lately.

Even my M1 iPad Pro started getting hot with the later iPadOS 16.x updates, and even a DFU restore under iPadOS 17.0.2 hasn’t addressed the issue.

As iOS is updated, apps need to keep pace. If people update a device to a newer operating system, it would be unreasonable to think that every app, particularly 3rd-party apps, will continue to run exactly the same.

The 15 Pro Max has new GPU hardware, doesn't it? Graphics-intensive apps may need an update to be fully compliant and compatible with that. Inefficient or incorrect code could lead to the phone doing work it doesn't need to do, hence extra heat generated.

All of my iPhones get hot. The more Apple spyware that is running in the background, the hotter my phones are. Also, funny how after 2 years the phones get even hotter more often 🤔

Here we go again. Some say "Mine never gets hot" others "mine is too hot"

This makes people think they have one from a bad batch or bad part. Apple should respond to avoid massive returns.

Didn't Apple learn this lesson like 20 years ago with the Titanium Power Book G4? Didn't that have huge problems with heat transmission through the titanium case?

As an anecdotal aside, my 15 Pro doesn't seem any hotter or cooler to me than my 14 Pro Max was.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

First of all, the titanium palm rest in the G4 powerbook was not relevant to the cooling solution of that system and second of all, titanium is not the problem here…no clue why anyone thinks it is…

This is 100% a transient condition as all the things get reindexed. My 15 Pro was hot for about a day and completely fine now.

11pm was the best, best battery life, best shape, lightweight, no crappy battery draining 5G! Then they ruined it with ios updates! 12pm was one of the worst for battery and many other issues mostly related to the buggy iOS. My sister had a 12mini it was the worst phone she ever had overheats constantly, battery lasted 4 hours. She upgraded to a S23 Ultra. Im sticking with my 11pm, gonna try to find a 13pm the last great iphone.

I'm not going to upgrade till they remove the island, no dot, and bring back touch id beneath the screen or as a button on the side.

PLEASE GET RID OF THE GLASS BACK I DO NOT CARE ABOUT WIRELESS CHARGING OR MAG SAFE! MAKE A CHEAPER PRO MAX WITH EVERYTHING BUT MAG SAFE AND WIRELESS CHARGING PLEASE FFS!

IT BREAKS TOO EASILY AND IT'S USELESS TO ME! I GORILLA GLUE A METAL RING ON THE BACK OF MY CASES ANYWAYS SO WIRELESS CHARGING DOESN'T WORK HALF THE TIME! I MUCH RATHER HAVE A LIGHTER CHEAPER PHONE I NEVER DROP THAT CAN DO EVERYTHING THE PM DOES!

The WSJ and Bloomberg - maybe this will finally get Apple's attention, and prompt a public statement. I was going to order a 15 Pro tomorrow, but I'm holding off at least until I hear from Apple.

I haven't noticed that yet, but I'll keep an eye out. Just now, though, I finished an 18-minute FaceTime Audio call on my iPhone 15 Pro (using AirPods Pro), and it's still completely cool to touch. The battery went from 78% to 76% during that time.
Yeah, audio calls are fine. I'm specifically pointing at video calls. Report back if you witness something you deem unusual!

...Both of the reports document anecdotal complaints from customers...

So, heatgate is real. At least the iPhone can now be used for a new purpose: egg cooking! 😋

(To prevent being decimated by the comment section, I'll note that this issue only appears to happen for some users. Not all.)
I think the qualifier here should be "anecdotal" and even then adding "gate" to any issue reported by any user on the internet is 🥱

iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max overheating concerns continue to make headlines this week, with the topic highlighted by The Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg.

iPhone-15-Pro-lineup.jpg

Both of the reports document anecdotal complaints from customers, and outline potential causes, but it's unclear how many devices are actually affected. Bloomberg said the overheating could be caused or compounded by the iPhone's setup process, suggesting that the higher temperatures might sometimes be a temporary condition.

The Wall Street Journal quoted a customer who felt his iPhone 15 Pro Max remained hotter than his iPhone 13 Pro Max a few days after setting up the device:The Wall Street Journal's Joanna Stern said her iPhone 15 Pro Max did heat up while charging and performing processor-intensive tasks, such as gaming, but she said her iPhone 14 Pro Max reached similar temperatures in the same test. During typical everyday usage, Stern said the temperature of both devices was in a normal range. Many customers on social media have also said their iPhone 15 Pro is not experiencing any overheating, and the lack of hard data makes it unclear if there is a widespread problem.

On Wednesday, Apple supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said the titanium frame on iPhone 15 Pro models negatively impacts thermal efficiency. Kuo believes that Apple will likely address the issue through software updates, but he said improvements may be limited unless Apple lowers the performance of the A17 Pro chip.

Apple has not commented on the concerns, and it's unclear if the company will actually make any software optimizations in future iOS updates.

The truth is the iPhones are over heating in IOS 17 and mainly when using Instagram (see this video) and it's not just iPhone 15 Pro.
Also, Apple have always had heat dissipation issues when pushed to the limit, with a more powerful processor and GPU they're not going to get any better, when it comes to gaming or editing on the phone.
Finally there is an agenda as usual by a small minority.

My phone got a little warm during setup, but didn’t seem anything unusual compared to the usual. Since then when doing normal tasks, it’s seemed to be fine.

I do wonder if there’s an element of silicon lottery. With TSMC’s N3 issues, very well could be there’s a wider variance unit to unit than typical

My 15 Pro has not yet seen any of the reported overheating or battery drain. If you are restoring up from an iCloud backup, you may see a few days of a warmer-than-normal device that burns battery faster than expected as it's constantly pulling down info from the cloud. But after a few days, things should return to a more regulated temp and battery performance. I set mine up as a fresh device, only logging into iCloud to sync all my Mail, Photos, Notes, Safari, etc. The lone annoyance is Messages.

Anyway, the 15 Pro is a pretty noticeable improvement over the 14 Pro in many ways. Namely, it is much lighter. Combined with the softer edges, and you get a device that feels way better in-hand. For something with which I interact multiple times a day, every day, those are significant and welcomed refinements.

Contrary to some of the louder, more click-bait negativity, in my real-world experience so far, 15 Pro (as a complete package, from hardware to iOS 17) is proving an outstanding update. YMMV, clearly.

My own experience: initial restore from backup, warm. Download 30GB of Kindle books over wifi 6E, hot. First time I streamed audiobook over car stereo bluetooth, hot.

That was the first three days. But since then, no hot or even really warm, including audiobook streaming. Never an issue with wireless charging (thugh my charger does have a fan built in)
