On years that a family member needs an upgrade I simply log in and pay off the device then start over with AUP that year on the phone.

Never had an issue since AUP was introduced that Apple hasn't made right.

Interesting you say we are a minority with zero numbers to back that up.

Work pays me monthly for a personal cell line with MAM apps. I haven't had to worry about getting ripped off selling my old phone and have zero worries about battery life.

Only annoying things are Verizon charging $35 because why not and getting a new case/screen protectors.

I've never met anyone on the AUP, and the only people I know that buy directly from Apple are myself and my brother, and he does it because of a 10% military discount. In fact, I didn't even know they still offered it.

3% is fine. I get the same with my AMEX.

Honestly i think Apple has run out of cool new ideas. A new camera button? Wow how innovative. I think Apple has gotten too safe in it's approach to new products/features. At least the competitors are doing foldables and flip style devices and trying something new. Really there's no need/incentive to upgrade yearly like there used to be
I agree the pro line especially is too incremental and plateauing in innovative and helpful features and tools. I am keeping my 15 PM and maybe going to 17 PM with rumored 15x(320 mm equivalent )telephoto a feature I would like. Not sure about folding phones but interesting

No way, only 45+ upgrades???

Every year I see 420+ upgrades over the previous generation from the "BEST IPHONE EVAR"!

too bad we are going again big and bigger in physical dimensions...
I'm interested in going with a phone smaller than my 14PM

I almost picked up a 15 Pro

The interesting thing about the 16 Pro is that it is smaller than the 14PM yet larger than the 15 Pro

Might be a good compromise in a smaller-but-larger phone

Once again a pretty small upgrade over the last year, but this is reality for smartphones now.
These yearly upgrades are mostly worthless expect you are such a huge Apple/Tech fan and you simply have enough money for this hobby.
Otherwise absolutely fine to keep a phone for 2-3 years.
And one of the big selling points with Apple AI are for me here in Germany also worthless for 2024 and most likely for 2025 also.

It might have me upgrading. More because I could pass a phone down to daughter rather than this is going to change my life.

Nice evolution but it has been a while since we had a revolution.

Are they ever going to do something new? I understand that there's risk in introducing entirely new concepts, but... a slightly better camera for edge cases? Uh... yay.

Come on, Apple. At least do a side project here. Samsung has had a whole line of flip & fold devices for years and they're great. Can't we have at least some innovation in the phone offering anymore?
There IS innovation with the new button…funny how people don‘t get the term „innovation“…

the days of "exciting" updates year over year are over, people don't upgrade every year anymore, but for plenty people on older iPhones the new ones will be exciting ...
As an iPhone 11 user, I don’t find this upgrade to be exciting at all. I didn’t even think it was worth skimming through their event video… might be the first iPhone event I didn’t watch.

so your hands gets also bigger and bigger, our pockets gets bigger and bigger..so you dont have anything against if Apple and Samsung goes with 8" displays in 4 years?! Lets get real, 6.5-6.7" its ok for a "big phone". When we draw a line since the borders now are at their limits...so you cannot go larger display without getting also larger physical dimensions
Lets travel with our phone not with mini tablets
Smartphones have been getting bigger for the last 14 years. If you haven't caught on yet, that's your problem.

You have an option... The iPhone SE. A phone with mediocre battery life.

Me personally? I want a larger phone with excellent battery life. Women have purses and guys carry backpacks or have large pockets,

So before you start trying to rip people for liking a bigger phone... Think twice.

I have zero reason to upgrade from my 15 Pro. Plus, I do not want or need a bigger screen. If anything, I’d probably go with the regular 16.

And don’t forget all your icons are going to snap automatically to the hardest place to reach.

I still don’t understand why in the year 2024 Apple thinks people can’t handle placing icons on a grid where they want them.
Haven't paid attention to iOS 18?

Let’s be Honest alright, the 15 series line up was was mediocre, disappointing, lame, BORING.
I guarantee that the next iphone will only come with 3 difference:
1) larger displays
2) a new button
3) “AI” integrated

Another Boring year ya’ll, so save the cash and skip, AGAIN.
So what would it take for you specifically to consider a model iPhone not boring?

I wonder why they're adding 40w fast charging. AAPL has held out for years due to battery longevity concerns. New type of battery?
All iPhone 16 models support 30W charging!

The incremental new video capabilities are cool, but it becomes increasingly harder to edit the footage on-device the more advanced you get.

For example, editing Log footage requires a specialized app to color grade accurately (one that works quite well).

Along with specialized apps, you have to ensure that the system isn’t down sampling your footage as it’s getting handed off to various apps in your workflow.

Any 15 Pro Max users thinking of downsizing to the 16 Pro? Even with just a few mm here and there, the 16 Pro Max is getting too big
Yes, i am thinking of doing this. For general carrying and handling I’ve found my 15 Pro Max a little too big for my purposes so going even larger is out of the question.

Of course I should just live with my 15 for another year, but gee do I want a smaller phone.

I read in one place the screen was made larger using smaller bezels. Implication was overall size could be the same as the iPhone 15. Will have to get the comparison up on a bigger screen than my iPhone

This is an old thread that somehow got resurrected. In the original article from February, it must have said 40w (or maybe I just made a mistake) but Macrumors edited/updated it with new info. So, people are getting confused and understandably replying to comments that are being viewed out of context.

Only 1-2% bigger in height and width? Maybe the 6.1" to 6.3" screen transition isn't so bad.

That comment was posted in February, before it was confirmed at WWDC.

I do know that, I’m running the 18 RC now and it’s glorious.
Man egg on my face I completely forgot that MR loves to bring old articles back to the front page. Comment section makes a lot more sense in that context.
